Default BBUK: Not racy enough?

There is an article comparing UK reality shows (mainly BB, LI, etc) as more tame and dull compared to "spicier" Australian variants.

The BB section of the article mentions this about the reboot:

Quote:
The Big Brother UK reboot came to an end last week with Jordan Sangha being crowned the winner and walking away with the £100,000 prize.

The rebooted series attracted a loyal fanbase yet failed to set the ratings alive, with the housemates' antics not proving wild enough to draw in some of its former fans.
Quote:
The British Big Brother was yanked off air in 2018 after the public fell out of love with the show and ratings plummeted.

Over its 18 years history the show aired many scandals, from the notorious Jade Goody racism row to Makosi Musambasi's pregnancy scare and the infamous Fight Night but in its latter years the show was criticised for casting 'fame hungry' contestants and losing its authenticity.

This October, after a five-year hiatus the show was revived by ITV, but in a bid not to repeat mistakes of the past, the housemates took part in 'respect and inclusion training' to ensure their behaviour in the house was acceptable.

The series was also accused of 'going woke' and after an initial interest, viewership swiftly began to decline.
They also mention the toning down of Love Island as another example of UK reality toning itself down:

Quote:
The ITV2 show has received thousands of complaints every season, with viewers shocked at the treatment of Islanders by the producers and by each other.

However, in 2019 ITV revealed key changes to their duty of care processes including enhanced psychological support and social and financial training following the deaths of 2017 contestant Mike Thalassitis and 2016's Sophie Gradon, both of whom died by suicide.

In 2020, the show's host Caroline Flack tragically also took her own life.
I don't see this as a bad thing. It's fine to have a few spicy castmembers, but I think that if it dominates the entire season then it becomes a problem.

I don't think it can be accused of going woke when the production have admitted to making the HM's take "respect and inclusion" training? That's the production confirming that they're extremely woke, and are anti-entertainment because they won't let people be themselves.

I think they need to consider wellbeing of contestants and if previous shows/years some have supplied plenty of alcohol and then contestants end up in bed together and no doubt have regrets later. I remember one series of love island where several of the couples were at it all in the same room which went quite far.

They limit alcohol now in love island so they don't get spicey/explosive scenes as much imo.

There are far too many racy shows now, BB was never meant to be racy, its a social experiement not a Love Island imitation.

Agreed and it's a very misleading article really because this BB series rated very well actually whereas BB Australia has had its worst ratings ever and only gets like 200k viewers if that

This seems like a desperate attempt to gain ratings for Big Brother Australia which is currently flopping at 80k viewers per episode.

How can they say the viewers want what Australia are showing when the viewership goes exactly against that.

Literally nobody in Australia is interested.

If being racist and homophobic is being themselves then they shouldn’t be on the show.

respect and inclusion training is education. It's no different to fire safety training.

Goodness sake .

it's bad enough the music and editing already feels like another LI copy, isn't that enough for them? Like mentioned....BB was never about being 'racy' and was always about being a social experiment, yes NSFW stuff happens on it and it's not always family friendly, but that shouldn't be the entire premise of the program .
