Default Floodings in Netherlands

https://nltimes.nl/2023/12/26/floodi...red-says-rutte

The rainy Christmas Day has caused significant inconvenience throughout the Netherlands. The problems are mainly in Overijssel and Gelderland, but also in Drenthe and Noord-Brabant where people were troubled by flooded basements, roads, and cycle paths. Prime Minister Mark Rutte said authorities were on top of the high water situation despite the national holiday.

"The high water is causing nuisance in various parts of the country. We are closely monitoring the situation and taking measures where necessary," Rutte wrote on X. "I wish everyone in the Netherlands dealing with the unpleasant consequences of the heavy rainfall a lot of strength." He went on to thank infrastructure workers at Rijkswaterstaat, regional water board staff, those tasked with protecting the dikes, and emergency services personnel for "working so hard, even during the holidays."

A partial flood in a electricity station also led to a power outage affecting over 11,000 households around Nijverdal, Overijssel, on Tuesday morning. The outage persisted for several hours, but it was largely resolved by about 9:15 a.m. The fire brigade pumped out the water at the station. The issue was first reported at about 3:30 a.m. By 6 a.m., 4,600 households were re-connected, a spokesperson for grid operator Enexis reported.

Only about 450 homes were still without power at 8:30 a.m.. It was expected that this would be resolved around 9:30 a.m. Those whose power was restored should not immediately use heavy appliances that run on electricity, including ovens, washing machines and microwaves, the spokesperson said. Then there is a chance that the power will go out again, she explained. “It’s a delicate balance.”

The Overijssel hamlet of Fortmond in the municipality of Olst-Wijhe was no longer accessible by car on Monday night due to the high water, according to De Stentor. Residents and visitors were taken to and from the mainland by a special ferry. In the rural area of Losser, streets were flooded because the Ruhenbergerbeek Riveer overflowed.

De Gelderlander reported that employees and volunteers in Poederoijen, part of the municipality of Zaltbommel, rescued 120 Konik horses and cattle, and brought them to safety. The area where the animals normally graze will probably be flooded on Thursday.

In Drenthe, fields were flooded and the Hart van Drenthe nature reserve was virtually impassable in some places due to high water, reported RTV Drenthe. A small sinkhole formed in Eelde and part of the Brouwersteeg/Hoofdweg intersection was cordoned off.

At the Kanthoeve recreation park in Bakel, Noord-Brabant, the toilets in about a hundred holiday homes overflowed because the sewage system could no longer drain rainwater, Omroep Brabant reported. According to the regional broadcaster, restaurant Het Wapen in Kaatsheuvel was flooded for hours because a pumping station stopped, and sewage water flowed into the catering facility via the toilets. The fire brigade pumped out the water and the restaurant was able to open again.

According to 1Limburg, the Niers River in northern Limburg reached the highest measured discharge ever at 28 cubic meters per second. There are high water levels, especially in the north of the province, but this did not lead to major problems anywhere on Monday night, even with the evening rainfall.

People who parked a vehicle along the Lek near Vianen were told to quickly remove their car from parking lot P3, reported RTV Utrecht. The car park is located behind the summer dike and was in danger of flooding as the water level rose rapidly. Vehicles were also moved from a parking lot along the Lek near Duurstede.

Quote:
2023 is likely to be the wettest year since official records began in 1901, with no halt to the showers up to the end of the month.

So far 1100 millimetres of rain have fallen at 13 of the country’s weather stations, and that is one millimetre more than the previous record set in 1998. Over the past few decades, some 853 millimetres have fallen on average.

“A lot of rain has fallen and a lot more is on its way,” a spokesman for weather bureau KNMI said. “It really does look as if the rain record will be broken.”

The rest of 2023 will be changeable and warm for the time of year, said NOS weatherman Peter Kuipers Munneke. “There will be some rain every day. So far this month, 75 millimetres has fallen and we expect 50 to 70 in the last week.”

Christmas Day (December 25) will be particularly wet, but there could be a little sunshine on December 26.

The rain has given some waterboards considerable headaches and in Limburg sandbags have been brought in to raise the dyke along the Roer river by Vlodrop.

The KNMI published its latest climate forecasts last month, saying Dutch summers will be warmer and winters wetter as the earth heats up. “It will be warmer every season, with more tropical days and fewer occasions when it freezes all day,” the agency said.

November was the wettest November since records began, with twice the average rainfall.

this immediately cancels these climate wokies with their ''drought'' problem nonsense in the world

UGH my nan in total panic mode, she even called us at 1.00, in the middle of the night when we were sleeping

she blames sewer pipes instead of ground water, while it is pretty obvious due to that lot of rainfall

they complain of drought they say, those farmers well they can't complain now with whats fallen this entire year basically (maybe because of some years ago lesser rainfall it piled up in the clouds? and now has to come down )

as for warmer summers, idk if they can already predict that, maybe or maybe not

https://nltimes.nl/2024/01/04/rijksw...am-tons-stones

Quote:
Rijkswaterstaat is having the broken dam in Maastricht closed with enormous quantities of large stones. These are brought in by ship from Wallonia, Belgium and then packed in huge nets that alone weigh 8.000 kilos. The nets are supplied from Rotterdam. May van de Kerkhof, director of network management Zuid-Nederland at Rijkswaterstaat (RWS), mentioned this as one of the options on Thursday during a visit to Maastricht.

Stones and nets have already been ordered to speed things up, but if that doesn't work, there is a plan B. In that case, RWS can close access to the canal with containers full of stones.

Mayor Wim Hillenaar spoke with the residents of the thirty houseboats on Thursday. They were evacuated on Wednesday after the dam on the Stuwweg broke. They cannot return home for a while, Hillenaar said. "The residents of the boats are incredibly shocked," Hillenaar said. "They are angry and sad at the same time."

Fire department chief Luc Valent said he expects the residents will not be able to return until Sunday at the earliest, but that depends on the emergency measures taken by RWS, he added.

Although the cause of the dam failure is still being investigated, according to Van de Kerkhof, the washing away of the spillway dam may have been partly caused by a defect in the nearby Borgharen weir, which cannot be completely ironed out. "That means the level is higher, but we didn't anticipate this swirling of the water," she said. The flow speed of the Maas River increased sharply due to the rain.

Van de Kerkhof and Hillenaar both expressed their condolences for the residents of a houseboat that drifted early on Thursday morning and crashed into a bridge. As a result, the bridge and boat suffered heavy damage. "These people lost their homes in one fell swoop," said Van de Kerkhof. "That's really sad!"

RWS is considering the construction of an emergency bridge or pontoon boats because the current bridge to the Stuwweg is about to collapse. The boats' residents, located along the dead-end road, could only reach their homes via that bridge. Now, they can no longer get to the boats. "The recovery of the bridge will take some time; all attention will first go to the recovery of the dam," said Van de Kerkhof

https://nltimes.nl/2024/01/04/water-...-flooded-areas

Quote:
Water boards are advising against letting children or pets play in streets or other areas that have been flooded by high water levels. The water from rivers, streams, and ditches has not been purified. It can, therefore, be contaminated, according to the municipality of Hoorn, where the Visserseiland street has been under water for days.Hoorn has placed extra big bags on Visserseiland due to Rijkswaterstaat expecting a new high water peak in the Markermeer on Friday or Saturday.

The water levels on the IJsselmeer and the Markermeer remain very high because most of the water cannot be discharged into the Wadden Sea. Strong winds push up the water, while the major rivers supply more water to the lakes. This is because the water level of the rivers will rise again from Thursday.

The Rhine River at Lobith is expected to reach its highest level of approximately 14.50 meters above NAP on Sunday or Monday, comparable to the highest water level of last week. That flood takes several days to flow to the lakes and the sea.

Water boards in the east and north of the country are also seeing the level of rivers such as the Vecht, the Dinkel, and the Regge rising again. They are expecting flooding but no significant problems. The rivers are being filled with rain from the Netherlands and Germany but are not connected to the big rivers.

The water boards in Overijssel, Drenthe, Groningen, and Friesland have taken many measures and placed sandbags where necessary, like at a campsite on the Leekstermeer in Drenthe. Wetterskip Fryslân will decide on Thursday whether fourteen water storage areas will be used in the province
