Nearly 50 traumatised Israeli revellers have killed themselves since Nova
festival was attacked by Hamas on October 7 with others sectioned due to
psychiatric issues, survivor tells parliament


Guy Ben Shimon spoke at a hearing for a State Audit Commission on the
treatment of survivors, focusing on the alleged failures of Israeli state bodies to
look after the victims of the attack.

'Few people know, but there have been almost 50 suicides among the Nova
survivors,' he claimed. 'This number, which was true two months ago, may have
increased since.'



"Why should I constantly prove what I experienced?' said Na'ama Eitan,
another survivor of the attack. 'Why am I forced to go back to the details of what I experienced for them to believe me?'

She said that she took part in a study to monitor her health but now sleeps
just two hours a night.

'Each morning at seven o'clock, I relive the moments when I was hidden in
the bushes with the terrorists passing by me.

'I can no longer move on my own. I need to be constantly accompanied.'

Unless there are some verifiable facts and figures on this, the gentleman is simply lying through his teeth/making up numbers on the spot. I'd have believed 5. 10 would be a push. 50 is a ludicrous claim.

I mean I don't want to be a denier too much but I think we also have to temper this with even the article not trying to claim that there are some actual stats and figures about this.

I'd willingly believe that 50 Israelis have committed suicide since Oct 7 with the attack being one of the triggering factors, but that's not the claim being made - the claim is specifically that 50 of the < 3000 Nova festival survivors have committed suicide since October 7th.

It just ain't realistically true.

I don't think he's "lying" per se it's not like he's a journalist or a politician or campaigner he's just a guy who was there, for obvious reasons knows how awful it was, wants to emphasise how bad it was and is just "saying stuff". Maybe has heard rumours of suicides and the number has been inflated "Chinese whispers" style. "Few people know this but..." suggests to me it's something he's been told by someone else.

"There are many survivors who had to be forcibly hospitalized due to their psychological state. My friends are not getting out of bed, neither am I," he described their condition since the October 7 attack.

"I am practically unable to do anything. I had to get a dog to help me survive in my daily life. The goal for all of us is to return to work and function normally, but we cannot do it without adequate help," Ben Shimon added.

The parliamentary hearing focused on alleged failures of the state bodies towards the survivors of October 7. There were complaints about the difficulties, notably bureaucratic, that the survivors faced in getting their post-traumatic stress disorder recognized, as well as in receiving the needed care.

"Why should I constantly prove what I experienced? Why am I forced to go back to the details of what I experienced for them to believe me?" Naama Eitan, another survivor of the music festival, asked during the hearing.

"I participated in a study that monitored my pulse and other parameters and revealed how bad my health is. I sleep on average two hours a night. Each morning at seven o'clock, I relive the moments when I was hidden in the bushes with terrorists passing by me. I can no longer move on my own, I need to be constantly accompanied," she described.

During the Hamas-led attack, 364 people were brutally murdered at the Nova Music Festival. According to recent studies, 600,000 Israelis were awaiting psychological support since October 7.



…I think what I personally would take from it is not what a number is ….(…because I have no way of knowing what that would be…)…but that it’s basically a cry for help…a plead for help in the mental healthcare that will continue for a long time to be needed but that sadly isn’t there at present…

..the takeaway is that people are feeling horrendous emotional trauma and are feeling abandoned…and I hope this hearing and his words will change that …
