It's that time of year again when my asthma really kicks in and starts to affect my every day life, for example, I wake up and need to use it, if I take a walk outside I need to use it (if it's cold) or if I make some kind of sudden movement I sometimes need it. It makes me incredibly vulnerable to catching colds and 'flu, and I'm sure I'm not the only one.
Anybody else suffer from asthma, to what extent, and how do you cope during winter? |

Theres alot of people in my class with Asthma. Is it brought on by inhaling smoke or something?

I have it too.
I'm not badly affected by it, so I don't get too down around this time. I do find I'm more likely to fall ill, or find it harder to breathe around this time. |

Conor - it can be due to obesity, inhaling passive smoke/smoking or poor air quality. There are lots of different theories as to what causes it, but I think the aforementioned are probably most likely. I developed asthma when I was a baby, apparently because we were on a ferry to France and we were sitting next to a woman who was smoking through the whole trip. I think that's partially why I hate smoking so much, because I feel it's had a dramatic effect on my life and I don't think it's fair.

Nope! It's really humiliating as well, if you're playing sports and you have to take some time out to get your breath back and take your inhaler. It's not like anybody passes comment, they're all very understanding, but you still feel useless and ashamed to an extent because they're all fit and healthy and you need to take medication. I also find if I'm going into an asthma attack, the worst bit is the panic that I can't find my inhaler, only after that do I start to feel that I could quite realistically die because I can't breathe properly - which doesn't help calm me down at all.

I first got it when I was about 2/3 and was really bad up until the age of about 7/8 and used to have loads of asthma attacks, sometimes ended up in hospital to control it using a nebuliser.
There was one time at school when I was about 5 that I came close to dying, I kept telling the teacher I wasn't breathing properly but she thought I was just lying so I was just sitting there barely able to breathe for about 2 hours, luckily my mum was coming to collect me at lunch time. If I get a cold now it's always much worse than a normal one as it goes straight into a chest infection. |

I've had it all my life. My last asthma attack was around March as I'd been sick in the day and that always triggers my asthma off and I was breathless all night and then woke up around 1 having an asthma attack so had to go to hospital and it was a chest infection that triggered it.
About 6 weeks ago I got a new inhaler which combines the blue inhaler and brown one and I've been fine since, I take it twice a day and I've not had a day where I have been bad since. |
