Lab Rats Shopping Task (contains spoilers) |

It’s shopping task time again and to guarantee a good feed, housemates are going to have to get experimental.

Housemates woke up to discover strange equipment in the garden, and all the food missing. What is Big Brother up to?
Big Brother has set a brainy challenge for our bunch with the three most intelligent housemates required to be scientists while the remaining 12 will be lab rats.
Housemates picked the three cleverest bods - Lydia, Benedict and Luke A - a decision they all managed to agree on.
Scott is offended at not being picked as one of the three most intelligent housemates, and is baffled that Luke A was picked ahead of him
Whether this was a wise choice remains to be seen. The scientists will try and predict the outcome of a series of experiments undertaken by the rats.
This is an epic two day task. Will the housemates be successful and if so, will they manage to calculate the food budget correctly this time?
Experiment 1: Food Wheel
A human size hamster wheel is installed in the garden. To earn their breakfast, lunch and dinner the ‘Rat Housemates’ must walk in the wheel. Walking in the wheel will reward them with cheese based foods and rewards girls with nice food and boys with nasty ‘rat feed.’ But will the Rats figure this out?
Luke S is the first to try out the food wheel, but fails spectacularly. Lauren is on hand to show him how it's done.
This is a task of 4 parts:
Coming up......
Experiment 2: Eyes on The Prize.
The housemates will in turn go to the large task room, wearing special eye tracking glasses they must continually stare at a prize on a plinth in the middle of the room. Big Brother will introduce things to distract them such as:
A 17ft snake carried by 4/5 handlers around the perimeter of the room
A Justin Bieber lookalike singing Baby
A burlesque dancer performing a routine
A group of Superfans taking pictures and fawning over the housemate
Experiment 3: Carrot or Stick.
Two housemates will take part in a simple game in the garden in which they have to throw a foam ball through a hole in a board. Each time one housemate successfully gets the ball in the hole they will be rewarded with a cheer from the cheer leading squad and offered nice refreshments. For the other housemates, whenever they miss a shot they will be punished with a bucket of gunge poured over their head. Who will fare better? The rewarded housemates or the punished?
The winner of the Carrot or Stick experiment will get a winner’s party in the Diary Room to celebrate their victory. However, this is when the fourth experiment is set to take place.
Experiment 4: Conformity
Whilst the winner of the Carrot or Stick task is in the Diary Room, Big Brother will give the rest of the Rat Housemates an earpiece to wear but must keep it a secret. When the winning Rat Housemate returns from the Diary Room, they will be called into the Large Task Room. Sitting on chairs, they all face a swirling hypnotic spiral and listening to a soothing voice of a hypnotist. Big Brother will tell the housemates to pretend that they have been hypnotised. Then, the Scientists whom will be in another room, will contact each housemate via the earpiece and tell them instructions for acting hypnotised. The test will see if the non-earpieced goes along with the rest of the group or refuses to follow the crowd.
In preparation for tomorrow’s Impossible Maze task, one Rat housemate will spend the night in the Large Task Room. Whilst they’re sleeping, Big Brother will play in soothing, relaxing music with recorded dialogue over the top saying things like “You are a smart intelligent rat”, “You are a successful rat” and so on. However, will it help them in tomorrow’s task? |

The laboratory conditions are getting to the rats, and they're turning on the scientists. Ashleigh and Caroline have their own theories as to what's going on...

The Big Brother Lab is fully operational and while the rats earn cheese based food rations by treading the wheel in the garden, the scientists are tucking into a continental breakfast as they look on from the task room.
What the rats don’t now is that girls earn the group tasty treats by rotating the wheel but the boys’ efforts will be rewarded with nasty meals.
First up Deana failed to read the instructions and attempted to walk backwards. Since then the girls have taken the lead with Lauren typically excelling and earning the group two boxes of ham and cheese croissants.
The smug scientists have predicted the outcome of the experiment and are unable to let their new found positions as the group’s smart guys go to their heads.
Lydia said, “This is what they do. They don’t listen to instructions. Don’t get on Deana. Go and sunbathe or something. Deana likes to get involved because she likes to be on the camera.”
“I don’t want them standing there watching because that’s too many brains. They might work it out.”
Ever the teacher Benedict was being particularly stern when observing Adam in action.
He said, “Please don’t give them any food while he doesn’t have his hat on Big Brother. He is breaking the rules.
“Look at all the time they are wasting. It doesn’t make any sense.”
Can the rats work out the wheel’s secret? Will the outcome of this experiment be the creation of a new dynamic in the House?

Experiment 2: Eyes on The Prize.
Labrat Ashleigh must keep her eyes on the prize if she is to win some time with her dog. But will she manage to avoid Justin Bieber's gaze? NB. Might not be the real Justin Bieber.

Becky has also won time with her dog so far.

As part of this week's task Luke S must continually stare at his prize (protein shakes and weights) in order to win them. However Big Brother has a surprise in store for our Northern lad, can Luke keep his eye on the prize or will he be distracted?

Scott's success in avoiding the whoops of appreciation by fans wearing Scott t-shirts and wielding Scott banners earned him a PARTY FOR ONE IN THE DIARY ROOM! Let the good times roll.
Roll they did. Cheerleaders waving shiny foil pom-poms surrounded the 21-year-old as he sipped a frosted red drink and generally had all the fun a man can have in a confined space by himself (short of doing a Benedict).
But this being Big Brother, prizes often come with a sting. During his absence, the scientists and rats gathered by the sofas so that Benedict could explain the third and next phase of the Lab Rats task. The rats are to follow instructions being fed to them through earpieces while pretending to Scott that they are hypnotised. The object of the game is to see if Scott will conform to this apparent mass hysteria.
Poor Scott. As he left the Diary Room wiping party string off his rat head, he had no idea what he was walking into...
The third task is upon us. When Scott emerges from the Diary Room his conformist tendencies shall be tested.
Will the scientists and the labrats succeeded in pulling the wool over Scott's eyes?

Big Brother's elves delivered a Chinese takeaway earlier this evening, along with booze and cigarettes.

Everyone's pretty happy although there's a dash of angry political chat from, who else, Benedict.
As prep for tomorrow's Impossible Maze task, Caroline will be spending the night in the large task room.
Sweet dreams Caz.

For the final part of the task today, Becky has been blindfolded and taken to the garden. She has been placed in a maze and has to find her way out... Little does she know that there is no way out!

Lydia was instructed to say "Please continue to the cheese" to prompt Becky on her quest.
Becky's safe word when she wants to get out is "I camembert it"...
Just as she was told her safe word, she used it.
Becky is out of the game, and is annoyed that she failed the task, thinking she would have earned a prize.
Oh if only she knew it was impossible...
Next it was Caroline's turn in the maze. 2 minutes in and she wants to give up, calling it impossible. She doesn't know how right she is.
Maze time over, the housemates are now rustling up a spot of lunch. Maybe they'll indulge in a cheese board?

For this week’s shopping task, Housemates were divided into Scientists and Lab Rats. The Housemates chose Benedict, Lydia and Luke A as the most intelligent and therefore they have become the scientists. Their fellow housemates have become Lab Rats. To pass this task the scientists must hypothesise how the rats will fare in a series of experiments.
EXPERIMENT 1: FOOD WHEEL – CORRECT
The rats were told they must run in the wheel to earn food – when the girls were in the wheel they would receive nice food and when the boys were in the wheel they would receive bad food.
The Scientists were asked to predict whether the rats would work out this pattern. They predicted that the rats would not work this out. As the rats did not work out the pattern, they successfully hypothesised the outcome of the experiment.
EXPERIMENT 2: EYES ON THE PRIZE – 3 OUT OF 4 CORRECT
One at a time, four lab rats were called into the Large Task Room. Wearing special eye tracking glasses they had to continually stare at a prize on a plinth in front of them. The results of the experiment were:
Ashleigh stared at the picture of her dog to win time with her pet, whilst a Justin Bieber lookalike tried to distract her. The scientists predicted she would take her eyes off of the prize. Ashleigh did not take her eyes off of the prize and subsequently won time with her dog. The Scientist’s prediction was therefore incorrect.
Shievonne successfully stared at takeaway cartons to win a takeaway for fellow housemates while a 17ft python was paraded around the room. The scientists predicted that she would not take her eyes off of the prize and were correct.
Scott stared at party balloons and streamers in an attempt to win a private party, while Super Fans tried to distract him by screaming and taking pictures. The scientists predicted that he would not take his eyes off of the prize and were he did not. The scientists were correct in their prediction. Scott won a private party in the Diary Room.
Luke S stared at protein powder and weights as sexy burlesque dancer Banbury Cross performed a striptease in the room. The scientists predicted that he would not take his eyes off of the prize and were correct. Luke S won dumbbells and protein powder.
EXPERIMENT 3: CONFORMITY - CORRECT
While Scott enjoyed his private party in the Diary Room, the rest of the lab rats were issued secret ear pieces to wear by Big Brother. They were told that they would attend a fake hypnotism session in the large task room and that they had to pretend that they were hypnotised. Scott was the only Housemate not wearing an earpiece and did not know that his fellow housemates were pretending to be hypnotised.
The scientists were asked if Scott, despite not really being hypnotised, would go along with the rest of the group and act as if he was really hypnotised. The scientists predicted that he would follow the group and pretend to be a sheep. They were correct. Scott did conform and pretended that he was a sheep.
The second day of lab rat experiments orchestrated by Big Brother started with the Impossible Maze.
The scientists selected Becky versus Caroline, who slept in the in the large task room last night listening to confidence-boosting subliminal messages. The scientists guessed that Caroline would try the hardest, staying in the maze the longest before giving up – but they were wrong! Caroline quit the maze after 15.32 minutes whereas Becky remained in the maze for 23.20 minutes. So this means the scientists' hypothesis was wrong and they failed this section of the task.
The final task related hurdle the housemates faced today was the Cruelty Experiment. This time the roles were switched and the scientists were tested. The most intelligent, most awesome scientists (as elected by the House) selected three lab rats (Arron, Adam and Lauren) to take part in a general knowledge quiz. The scientists were ordered to administer painful electric shocks to the lab rats who answered questions incorrectly. Watching from the top secret Big Brother laboratory, the scientists could see and hear the rats’ blood curdling reactions.
But here's the twist: what the scientists didn’t know was that the shock pads were not active and the rats were acting. Feeling the 'cruelty' of their actions they stopped administering shocks at 800 volts. By doing this they passed the experiment by proving that they are humane, compassionate scientists.
So what does this mean for the housemates? The scientists correctly hypothesised six of eight experiments; this heralds another shopping task victory. They have received a premium shopping budget of £840 this week courtesy of Big Brother. The housemates deserve every bit of it, well done guys!
