ITV4 To Broadcast Snooker's World Open

19th Febuary 2013

ITV4 is to show full coverage of snooker's Haikou World Open, which begins next Monday.

Extensive live coverage of the tournament in China begins on Monday 25 February, running from 6.10am to 3pm each day until the final on Sunday March 3. It marks a return to snooker for the ITV network, as the sport's first ranking event shown since the 1993 British Open.

The Haikou World Open, staged on Hainan Island, will feature star players, including China's number one Ding Junhui, defending champion Mark Allen, world number one Judd Trump, John Higgins, Mark Selby and Neil Robertson.

Clive Everton, Neal Foulds and Peter Drury will make up the commentary team for ITV4's coverage.

Niall Sloane, ITV Director of Sport, said: "We are delighted to bring to our viewers comprehensive coverage of such a key event in the snooker calendar, which adds another dimension to ITV4's sports portfolio."

World Snooker Chairman Barry Hearn said: "We are developing an increasingly competitive marketplace in terms of broadcast of our events so it's a fantastic step forward for ITV to provide extensive live coverage of a world ranking event. We're delighted to be working with the ITV team.

"The Haikou World Open is a superb event with a top prize of £85,000 and deserves to be brought to a wider audience with free to air broadcast in the UK. We are a rapidly growing global sport and there is a high demand among fans."

Good and interesting news, it'll be interesting to see their coverage although...that's if anyone actually gets to see any of it. 6am till 3/4pm each day doesn't give much opportunity to watch unless your record it :( I know that's not their fault, just the fault of moving the event to China.

And unfortunately a Ronnie VS Judd final can't happen, they're on opposite ends of the draw. They can only meet in the semi final :( which is why I'm even more gutted Neil's out because a Ronnie and Robertson final was possible.

Disappointed Selby's out as well, not a huge fan but a final with him and Ronnie would've been alright. I'll be rooting for Michael White now on the other side of the draw for a final with O'Sullivan.

I mean entertaining in the context of the game of snooker, not personality based (although that certainly is a bonus, nothing wrong with bringing some funny moments for a crowd). All rounders that are fantastic break builders, incredible potters, have solid cue-power and control the cue ball fluently and are also great safety/matchplayers are the best. Not to mention having a whole load of good exhibition shots under their belt. Judd and Ronnie certainly tick those boxes. They take risks and play the game much differently and far more entertainingly than most. Shaun's a good player and I can't deny that but he doesn't have the spark that those two do.

Ronnie O'Sullivan says this year's World Championship could be his last major event, stating he only returned to the sport for "a bit of money".

The defending champion, 37, beat Stuart Bingham 13-4 on Wednesday to move into the semi-finals of the tournament.

O'Sullivan pulled out of the 2012-13 season last November because of "personal issues" before ending his snooker sabbatical in February.

"I've realised I don't miss snooker but I needed a bit of money," he said.

"I'll be honest, I still owe the school money for my children's school fees, I haven't paid the last two or three terms.

"I didn't know what was going to happen here but I've made a little bit of money now so I can go and pay the school fees now for the next two years.

"But really I don't think snooker is for me. This could be my last proper major event."

O'Sullivan's reward for defeating Bingham is an enticing last four encounter with Judd Trump, who overcame Shaun Murphy 13-12 in a thrilling quarter-final.

Despite confirming he has fallen out of love with the game, O'Sullivan promised he will give his all against Trump.

He added: "I'm a competitor and I hate losing. I will fight to the death. They'll have to scrape me off the table.

"I've got five days left potentially, it could possibly be three, and if I can't get through that then something's seriously wrong.

"The light at the end of the tunnel is it doesn't have to go on any longer."

Even if he successfully defends his World Championship title, O'Sullivan said he will not be returning to the Crucible next year.

"I've no intention to come back," said O'Sullivan, who is contracted to play in 10 more events, although those could include Legends tour events, and low-profile tournaments.

"If I find something else to do you definitely won't see me.

"I've kept my cards close to my chest but there's no reason to keep them close now.

"This is my last farewell, it's my swansong. I'm happy; I'm done.

"I'll fulfil my contract and keep my sponsor happy. It's just 10 events and I'll see them out."

I'm so disappointed :( not really surprised I don't think, we all knew this day would come but I thought he might stick around for a few of the major tournaments, guess all the stuff a couple of weeks back about missing it was all a lie like he alludes to at the end, which is a shame. I'd be quite happy for him to just turn up at the World's each year to be quite honest, not sure if that's really feasible though in terms of rankings and qualifying and the new schedule.

No idea myself of the rules. Each time I have seen snooker, which isn't often, I find it quite impressive how they pot numerous balls after one another. That's about it though.

I've never understood the Ronnie VS Hendry, Ronnie VS Judd comparisons. They're all brilliant players and to deny any of them aren't would be moronic. They all have lots of respect for each other too and it's great to see them play each other. We can have ones we prefer but they're all still geniuses.

You have to pot red, colour, red, colour, red, colour etc until all the reds are gone, then you pot the colours in order of yellow, green, brown, blue, pink and black. You get 1 point for each red you pot and these for the colours:

Yellow - 2 points
Green - 3 points
Brown - 4 points
Blue - 5 points
Pink - 6 points
Black - 7 points

Person with the most points at the end of a frame wins it. A frame is a single game, the match is a best of a certain number of frames (in the semi-finals best of 33, so first to win 17 frames).
