I watch it if i remember it's on. I tend to end up seeing beginning rounds then missing rounds in middle and seeing Semis/Final and usually missing the winning frame too.

Fair enough even though your logic is ... non existent. Great snooker games are hardly determined soley by the tournaments they are played in. Today proved that.

Only care about the best tournament - to me it doesn't matter who wins the side ones

Stu

I couldn't care who wins either bar supporting Ronnie. I think Snooker is fairly free of much fandom. Most people just want to see a good game.

Got a feeling the Chinese will dominate soon, they are mad for it.

Oh yes definately, the past 2 years Snooker has been topping TV ratings in China......the chinese have to move to europe to be sriously ranked contenders, hence why not so mnay have been in top 16 yet, it will happen though next year or two...

I'm looking foward to the future of Snooker in the UK under the Barry Hearn era. He did wonders for Darts, after all.

Can't see the media drowned, internet savy youth of today having much of an attention span for the game though, which is a shame.

Ronnie O'Sullivan hit top form at the World Open in Glasgow today as he hit a maximum 147 on his way to a convincing 3-0 victory over Mark King but had to be persuaded by the referee to complete his break.

The world No6 took the first frame easily with breaks of 38 and 75 before getting the better of King in a scrappy second.

O'Sullivan hit his maximum in the next, but did not do so without controversy and had to be urged by the referee to pot the final black after seeming content to end his break at 140.

Earlier in the frame O'Sullivan had stopped to ask what the reward for a 147 was, only to be told there was no specific prize except for a £4,000 sum for the highest break. He took less than 10 minutes to reach 134 but shook hands with King after potting the pink. The referee Jan Verhaas then had to convince O'Sullivan to finish the break and he eventually potted the black before walking off.

"I wasn't going to pot the black because I asked and was told there was no break prize for a 147," O'Sullivan told the BBC. "What's the point of making a 147 if you're only going to make £4,000?"

This 147 means O'Sullivan now holds outright the record for the most televised maximum breaks – today's was his 10th, taking him clear of the previous record he held jointly with Stephen Hendry.

The 34-year-old's victory sets up a fourth-round match with his boyhood hero, Jimmy White.

Coulnt find a video but it was one of the most Bizarre things I've ever seen!

Was watching a bit earlier and they were on about the Higgins thing and gambling. Apprently there is gonna be loads of new rules about players betting on themselves and also family betting on them. It's gonna be a lifetime ban if anyone is caught. It's good really cos it scares people, and Snooker is a dying sport as it is.

In professional tournaments, there is usually a substantial prize awarded to any player achieving a 147 break, typically an amount contained "147", e.g. £147, £1,470, £14,700 or £147,000 depending on the prestige of the tournament. As an extreme case, Ronnie O'Sullivan's 1997 maximum earned him £165,000 (£147,000 of this was for making the 147 break and another £18,000 was for achieving the highest break of the tournament).

what makes it different to regular snooker?

GiRTh
30-10-2010, 12:46 PM
Watching it now. Looks quite good but what are the rule changes?

Iceman
30-10-2010, 12:47 PM
THE RULES OF THE TRADITIONAL GAME OF SNOOKER APPLY, SUBJECT TO THE FOLLOWING VARIATIONS:

• Nine reds are racked in a diamond, with the point of the diamond next to the pink.

• The middle red is the PowerBall, which when potted counts for two points and triggers a two minute PowerPlay during which every ball potted counts double – if a shot is missed during a PowerPlay, the player’s opponent inherits the remaining time.

• Each game lasts half an hour; the clock starts when the reds are broken, and stops as the final black of each frame is potted.

• A shot clock limits players to twenty seconds for each shot.

• If the twenty second shot clock is exceeded, there is a 20 point penalty and the initiative passes to the player's opponent unless the opponent opts for the player to continue.

• Points count, frames don’t. The most points scored after half an hour wins.

• When a player breaks, two or more reds must hit a cushion otherwise the player’s turn ends.

• The area behind the baulk line is the PowerZone – if the cue ball is struck from within the PowerZone, any colour potted counts for double and during a PowerPlay, quadruple.

• A century break in any frame is worth 50 bonus points. If this is repeated in the next frame, 100 bonus points. If this is repeated in the third frame, 200 bonus points.

• The “ball in hand” principle applies following a foul shot. The cue ball can be positioned anywhere in the PowerZone.

• A foul shot during a PowerPlay carries a double points penalty.

• A foul shot occurring when the cue ball is struck from the PowerZone and during a PowerPlay, carries a quadruple points penalty.

• The game will end after the half hour playing period and the player with the most points wins.

• If the game is tied on points after the half an hour, the table is cleared and the game is decided by potting the re-spotted black.

Wish i had ITV4 :(

Higgins V Williams in the final. Should be a good one!

Almost an oldskool match it seems. Williams is starting to regain his prolific form from early 2000s while Higgins has came back from a ban showing why he is ranked as high as he is. Because Higgins is Scottish, I'm gonna back the fellow Scotsman to win the title.

I will watch it if i remember its on (which i have missed most of the tournament from forgetting its on so seems unlikely)

Stu
10-01-2011, 10:11 AM
He allows himself to fall victim to his own mental instability, sure, but it's a joke to say he brings nothing to the game. For better or worse he is the modernized snooker player. He has done more to popularize it with young people than anyone else in his generation. People come to the shows to see Ronnie O'Sullivan. I find him endlessly more fascinating than wet farts like Higgins and Williams, despite his recent loss of form.

I hadn't watched much Snooker over the last year before The Masters so not really sure whos in form and whos not. I always get mixed up between these two, i watched one of them against Robertson in the quarters and they played well.

I'm tired of him now to be honest. I always cheered him on but he has been like this for ages now so it's becoming hard to get behind him. Either get your head back in it or **** off out of it.

Ronnie O'Sullivan no doubt has a great talent but like all in life,if he keeps messing tournaments about then he should be replaced in them, not tolerated by them.

His attitude is wrong and not fair on the other professionals who just get on with it.
I'd never question his talent though. When on form, he is brilliant.

Last year Ronnie really effed me off when he was on for the 147 and turned to ask what the prize money was (he was on the black) and he didn't think it was enough so started to walk off, leaving the black. The ref stopped him and told him to get it potted. Too right. Disrespectful git
