Here's an official map, areas surrounding the set are earmarked for expansion

Which would include Crimea Street and Inkerman Street!

I read that they are putting in planning permission for any future extensions to the set they may want to make, but initially will only be making a (slightly larger) exact copy of the current exterior set. They are also going down the route of what EastEnders did, ie building a set of cladding on a metal frame, rather than building proper houses out of brick etc... I just hope it looks ok, as it's bound to look at least a bit different... :conf2:

Scarlett.
19-12-2010, 11:43 AM
they're building facades of the Bonded Warehouse and Science and Industry museum, just so it'll look the same xD the expansions will be discussed in a year

flamingGalah!
19-12-2010, 10:09 PM
I reckon they will do something different instead of just making facades of the Museum as they are never properly seen in shot anyway. It gives them the opportunity to have more realistic buildings that would really back onto a terraced street. They could make the Museum bit Nuttalls Brewery, which I think it is supposed to be anyway...

Scarlett.
19-12-2010, 10:21 PM
Yeah it is, they will be able to customise the buildings now

After years of rumours and uncertainty, building work has started on Coronation Street's new home at MediaCityUK.

One of the soap's longest serving stars, William Roache, was appropriately on-hand to break the ground on what will eventually become the studio base for the soap.

"It’s over fifty years since I first walked on to a Coronation Street set, and now I’m here with Michelle [Keegan], starting the build of our new home – the one that will take us well in to this century, and it feels fantastic.”

The 7.7 acre site is across the water from the main BBC studios, alongside the Imperial War Museum North and will be a bespoke stand-alone production and studio centre for Coronation Street.

“Our move to MediaCityUK is an historic one that will continue our commitment to the North, ensuring our longevity as the major programme maker in the region and make us a crucial part of Europe’s biggest media population. It is a very exciting time,” added Kevin Lygo, managing director, ITV Studios.

Work is expected to be complete by spring 2013.

If it'll be built to real life standards does that mean the street will look really different?! Will there be a storyline covering this or are they just gonna pretend nothing changed?

I don't feel sorry for them at all, for decades Northerners had to go down south to even have a chance of making it in the media, I'm glad times are changing

Coronation Street is on course for a re-birth when it moves out of its historic Manchester home.

The Rovers Return regulars are set to embark on their final 12 months of filming at Quay Street, home to Corrie for the last 51 years.

Building work has already begun on Weatherfield’s new home at Trafford Wharf, across the water from MediaCityUK at Salford Quays.

If all goes to plan, filming will switch to the new site in spring of next year with exterior and interior sets, plus a production base, on the 7.7 acre site.

Executive producer Kieran Roberts said: "The move is full steam ahead. It’s a huge project and incredibly exciting.

"But we’ve got to arrive when it’s 100 per cent finished because we have to stop one Friday night at Quay Street and start the next week down at Trafford Wharf. So we’re keeping an open mind about an exact date."

The ITV1 drama is usually shot six weeks ahead of broadcast. But cast and crew will be shooting extra episodes in the run up to the move.

Kieran said: "Over the course of the next year we’re going to get a little bit further ahead of ourselves than we normally do."

The new exterior set will be an exact replica on the existing one, while increasing the scale of the buildings so they match the size of those in the real world.

Kieran explained: "What I’m hoping we’ll achieve is that we’ll have a site that’s a real improvement for us making the show and the viewer won’t notice any difference."

He said the focus would still be on the main Coronation Street cobbles but some areas of Weatherfield, such as Victoria Street, will be slightly extended.

He said: "We won’t be able to expand infinitely when we get there so we need to plan for the future. We can open up little areas that we haven’t had before."

Producer Phil Collinson said: "It’s a massive move for the show and a very exciting transition. A really exciting re-birth. It will look the same but feel very different for us working there."

it looks like a building site but i have faith in corri. all they need to do is sort out some of the actors now and it will be splendid. mind you i have not seen chris fountain in it for a while so maybe they are doing this. ashame i can not same the same about kirsty - terrible actor.

When they move to the new set, I think they will be changing producer too, so we will hopefully have the storylines sorted out then

I found a good comparison picture
http://i48.tinypic.com/dyum1t.jpg

Things I noticed
- The Viaduct is a LOT bigger, and now continues past the Kabin
- Victoria Street is a lot wider and now continues past Victoria Court
- The factory is MASSIVE compared to the current one
- The Rovers now looks a lot bigger compared to the rest of the houses

flamingGalah!
04-01-2013, 01:47 PM
You can tell it has been built to real scale now by the size of the workmen on site! It will take ages to walk the length of the street now, on the the current set it takes no time at all...

Good to see that the Rovers is being built much bigger too after all these years, though I am disappointed they have kept the viaduct to nowhere next to it, surely now there is no big Granada building right behind the set to obscure they could have done something else...

Scarlett.
04-01-2013, 09:42 PM
Yeah, I noticed the Corner shop actually looks quite a bit wider than the rest of the houses too, will finally look like a proper shop from the outside

New set facts

Coronation Street Trafford is the 5th interpretation of the nation’s favourite Street

It has taken over 60 organisations and over 3000 people to create and build it

The lot is 7.7 acres and is based in Trafford

Coronation Street is 2.5 feet wider allowing cars to pass with ease

The tree outside the salon is an Alnus Icana, from Holland it weighs six tonnes and stands 40 feet high. It is around 25 years old and is one of the largest trees ever planted in the UK

There are over 400,000 facing bricks on the Lot, of which 144,000 were reclaimed from a derelict Salford street

Our new windows are home to over 600 feet of curtain rail holding 120 curtains for twitching!

Formerly studio based the ‘Underworld’ set will be permanently housed within the factory lot

A total of 54,000 cobbles have been laid on the new street reclaimed from Salford and the canal side in Eccles

So, this isn't really anything big - but there isn't a thread other than this one to put it in! I went to Manchester today with college to see A Midsummer Night's Dream and it was in the Lowry. This is basically right next to MediaCity and the brand new Coronation Street set. The new outside set will be shown from next week onward, most of the interiors this week are new though. Expect Underworld to look a lot different, since it will be filmed in the actual Underworld building. Generally, all the new sets will have a more realistic look to them, due to the studios being state of the art, and not old 60's studios upgraded over 50 years

Yep, they showed it on the documentary tonight.

I think they're mostly the same as the 2010 ones, with a few new shots added in

I was just looking at a picture of the new set, and I noticed they've actually snook a new street in.

I'm glad they burnt down those flats too

What's the new street? Isn't that just the fake backdrop like it was at the old set?

Nah, if you look closer, you can see doors and windows in the facade

I think its a good idea to have a street there instead of the mural, they could actually make use of it in the show then.

They're revamping the cobbles again ain't they? Problems with them due to H&S concerns apparently and according to the paper stars like Kym Marsh-Ryder-Lomas-Marsh-Mellor-Marsh (or whatever she calls herself next) and Michelle Keegan were worried about falling over.

Yeah, but to be fair on them, the new cobbles don't look as well done as the Granada ones. They're a bit less flat, its just a little correction they've had to make.

Maybe Kym Marsh and her clan should wear normal shoes.

Honestly, it's as though they're walking the catwalk sometimes when I put it on.

Eva always comes out of that poky little house to go to her poky little job across the road dressed like she's going to the Oscars with perfect hair. :joker:

Not naming no names, but no Acting is required with some stars in Corrie, they play themselves or just roll their eyes, pout, moan.

Scarlett.

God knows how they manage to walk on the cobbles with those shoes, lol.

Weirdly, though the set has moved, they still seem to be using the Granada set for Weatherfield General

If they have to travel for that stuff hopefully it means less hospital. It got to the point where someone was in hospital every week just for the sake of it.

True, it is quite possible the new owners of Granada Studios will retain the Police station/town centre/hospital sets for Corrie for now.

They showed off the street a little more tonight, seeing everything at a proper size at least made the street seem a bit more realistic, especially in long shots like this, there's no way the Bistro would have fit in the old set, but it looks a much better size now.

I dunno, there's a little fake entryway style bit on the facade (that shed/box type bit), which would be there to give the illusion that it's not just a wall, its quite likely that it will be used in the show at some point.

So is that just for filming purposes and Kitchener Street is meant within the show to be a bit further away or is there supposed to be a police station behind the kebab shop?

Scarlett.
22-02-2017, 09:34 PM
I reckon it will be a little further away, wouldn't make sense to be directly behind Victoria Street, since thats where Victoria Street's back street is

Rob!
22-02-2017, 10:52 PM
So is this supposed to have been there all along or is it going to be written as a new addition to the surrounding area? Cause there's plenty of times over the last 56 years where the street could have done with police on their doorstep

I thought they started it ages ago and that was the excuse for the building stuff that they had Gary working on at the brewery.
