A MAN who was shot in a car during riots in London has died in hospital from his injuries, police said, becoming the first fatality from three days of unrest in the British capital.

The 26-year-old man was found with gunshot wounds late yesterday in Croydon, a south London suburb where several buildings were burned down during the riots, London's Metropolitan Police said.

Looks like there's been some minor attempts at vigilantism in Enflied, Paul Lewis from the Guardian:

It was only a minor skirmish, but a potentially bad sign for community relations. Police, who have flooded the streets, were quickly on the scene when about 70 men
started chasing local youths.

I wouldn't mention their ethnicity, but it seemed to be relevant. The men were white - in their 30s and 40s - and shouting that they wanted to get the "blacks" and "*****". Lots of them seemed drunk. One man being held back by police shouted: "They're rats, they mugged my Auntie the other night."

Jay Bradley, 30, a witness, told me: "What happened here? What I just saw - everyone from this area aren't gonna have any looting.

What I saw was a couple of ethnic lads, if you can call them that, black lads, and they chased them away.

A lot of it is alcohol - I don't think the kids were doing anything. They were just on bikes and in masks.

But no-one around here is going to stand for any looting. What are we supposed to do. The Co-op is closed and we're running out of food."

I know, I just hope it doesn't end up being about race or that it leads to racial violence. It doesn't look as though things are as bad in London tonight anyway, I know it's still early but this time last night there'd been a lot of violence and looting. I don't want them to resort to having troops on the street either, there are still things the police can try, even an increased presence or changing their tactics would help.

This. Every time they mention it they say "Cameron had to come back from his country early", fix the bloody country why don't you before you jet off on holiday. No one gives a crap about your holiday being cut short, he wanted to be PM so he should have sold his life to running the country rather than getting the media to make us feel sorry for him.

I completely agree. I got so angry this afternoon listening to them bang on about how he had to cut short his holiday. He wanted the ****ing job to run the country so he should be there to sort it out when it's in a state like this.

Reporters attacked

Journalists and cameramen from Sky News, ITN and the BBC were attacked last night as London erupted into violence for the third consecutive night.

A crew from the BBC were confronted by rioters while trying to drive their van down London Road in Croydon, where a furniture store was earlier set ablaze and shops looted.

BBC producer Paraic O'Brien, who was driving the vehicle, told Journalism.co.uk that he had "never seen anything like it", describing the scenes in Croydon as "apocalyptic".

"There was all this debris on the road so we had to slow right down. I was driving and my cameraman was in the passenger seat, discreetly filming through a closed window, we had no lights in the car. In the back were two security guards and editing staff," he said.

"Then a crowd of kids gathered round the van and started shouting and chanting, and someone either hit the window with a metal bar or threw a brick through it.

"It was something of immense force, enough to dent the frame of the car, and the entire back window smashed in on the guys in the back. You get used to the usual abuse covering these things and you take it in your stride, but last night they were definitely targeting journalists."

ITN, the producer of ITV News, Channel 4 News and London Tonight, said that its broadcasting van was attacked in Tottenham earlier in the evening. Channel 4 News reporter Kris Jepson revealed on Twitter that camera equipment had been smashed during a scuffle with rioters.

Sky News reporter Mark Stone, who was off duty last night, left his home in Clapham Junction to cover the disturbance in the area using his iPhone.

At one stage, he asked a looter: "Are you proud of what you're doing?" A woman responded by saying that she was "just getting my taxes back". Stone was later chased away from the scene by rioters, but returned to report live from Clapham Junction using a Sky News satellite truck.

Sky News home news editor Mark Evans paid tribute to Stone's commitment and told The Guardian that all Sky's journalists had been given a security briefing this morning.

He said: "Mark's a very committed and brave young journalist. His use of kit shows how technically minded both he and Sky News are. We don't have the same kind of kit and resources that our competitors do and the use of iPhones and other tools allows us to be first."

CNN reporter Dan Rivers wore a helmet and what appeared to be body armour while he covered the rioting in Peckham. He was forced to retreat after objects were thrown at the police line.

However, the rolling news coverage proved a hit with viewers, delivering Sky News and the BBC News Channel their highest viewing figures for ten years.

Based on the number of viewers who tuned in for at least 15 minutes during the day, Sky News had a total reach of 6.81m yesterday, its highest audience since the Iraq War coverage in 2003.

The BBC News channel had a total reach of 8.8m, eclipsing its previous record of 8.5m on March 11 this year for coverage of the Japanese earthquake.

Also last night, the unrest across London enabled the BBC's flagship 10pm news bulletin to draw its biggest audience of the year, at 7.15m with a 32.6% share of the TV audience in its timeslot.

The BBC has so far received a total of 119 complaints about its coverage of the riots, with 70 accusing it of bias towards the police, 41 saying there was too much coverage and eight viewers upset at the BBC using the word "protestors" when it should have said criminals.

Social media services such as Facebook, Twitter and Blackberry Messenger have also come into the spotlight for the role they played during the disturbances.

I hope it has calmed down for good however, it may well be the calm before the storm again.

Where I am people this morning are now really concerned at going out later at night, people should not have to have those fears. There are going to be massive costs for this and the Govt has to not get complacent because things were quieter but prepare for anything that may be being planned by these scum in the near future.

As someone said above too, likely terrorists will be watching this and work out how they can take advantage of the fear and chaos.
Hopefully, the end of it,for now at least, is in sight.

This. Every time they mention it they say "Cameron had to come back from his country early", fix the bloody country why don't you before you jet off on holiday. No one gives a crap about your holiday being cut short, he wanted to be PM so he should have sold his life to running the country rather than getting the media to make us feel sorry for him.

I don't know what your gripe is here. Is it that the press said Cameron had returned early from his holiday? Or that he went on holiday in the first place?

Cameron really is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. He has been in power only fourteen months. The police have responded to the riots largely by standing around and letting the rioters loot. Why is that...? It's because under Labour, almost every police force in the land was taken over by a senior copper who has a sociology degree; people who think that criminals should be given understanding and free adventure holidays. I'm sure the police would like nothing more than to get stuck into the pathetic, dickless rats who are currently being allowed to disgrace our country. I want the police in there with night sticks, baton rounds and tear gas and b****cks to the touchy-feely liberals who even now are worrying about the "poor, under-privileged" looters.

I don't really mind if Cameron does take the occasional holiday, you can't really expect him to be working away in number 10 24/7 365 days a year and even on holiday he is still working really. My problem is that all the leading members of the cabinet were off on holiday at the same time; Cameron, Clegg, Boris and Osborne were all away! With the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, London Mayor and Chancellor all out of the country we're left with the likes of William Hague and Theresa May effectively running the country

A very good uncompromising statement from the PM this morning, look, the man is entitled to a holiday, maybe it should be that both PM and Deputy PM shouldn't be away at the same time but Cameron is hampered with the sad excuse for a Minister in Clegg.
William Hague is very competent and he is far better Deputy PM material.

I do feel from the PMs statement though, that the Police have shot themselves in the foot, he strongly stated that he asked the Police if they felt they had all they needed to deal with this chaos and they assured him they have. so they must prove that, if more criminal behaviour occurs.

He at least unlike Theresa May has opened up the possible use of water cannons, albeit at 24 hours notice, odd restriction since no one knows when these looters and criminals take to the streets anyway, but he's opened the option up for the Police. All Theresa May(I have little faith in her as Home Secretary,I thought Jacqui Smith was bad but May is atrocious), could do was smirk when she was asked about them.

The PM has laid down good solid guidelines, he has done that as quickly as he could,he knows this could make or break him too as to how these criminals are dealt with, somehow,I think he has a grasp of it all now, he is to be commended and supported.

To be honest, of all the people in the Tory Party, I would rather William Haig be in charge than anyone. He was never taken seriously mostly because of the toe-curlingly embarrassing speech he made at the Party Conference as a Young Conservative, and Harry Endfield's "Tory Boy", which was obviously based on Haig. He's a bloody brilliant politician though.

Everyone was away at the same time - with only holiday cover if you like - because Parliament goes into recess during the summer every year. Just because Cameron was on holiday doesn't mean no one was in charge. And on a personal note... thanks looters, for making Cameron recall Parliament. That's just what political staff needed... all the MPs back when we thought we'd got shot of them and could actually get some work done.

I agree Joey - especially with your comments on Theresa May, a woman who in my opinion couldn't find her ar5e in the dark with both hands.

When Cameron asked the police if they had all they needed, he asked the top brass. I feel the answers may have been very different if he'd spoken to officers on the ground.

When Cameron asked the police if they had all they needed, he asked the top brass. I feel the answers may have been very different if he'd spoken to officers on the ground.

For her to find her ar5e she would have to take robust and decisive action in order for her hands to have the full support of her arms in order that her ar5e could be swiftly identified and brought to justice.
