View Full Version : Alex's car insurance is £3000
Where does she live, what car does she drive and how many accidents has she had?

She has a 'new' / newish Mini.
If she's fully comp, given her age etc: it's hardly unsurprising.

Fully comp works out cheaper a lot of the time
If she was male I'd just get my head around it, but girls usually get about 40% cheaper

for a female of her age, with very limited years driving experience, the value / age of her car, and I'll hazard a guess the car isn't garaged at night in a salubrious upmarket part of town - £3k is not out of the ordindary.

My insurance is due at the end of next month so I've been putting a hell of a lot of quotes through. Just 1 example with the same company:
Third party- £619
Third party, fire & theft- £615
Comprehensive- £246

And a quote
"And it is also worth bearing in mind that fully comprehensive insurance policies are often cheaper than third party fire and theft policies, so utilise our comparison tool to see if you can cut the cost of your premium and take advantage of the extra level of protection on offer."

I can remember when those quotes would have been reversed, probably you can, too.

Not really, but when I first started driving (only 5 years ago) they were much closer and I was shocked to see the gap, I don't remember it being like that last year. Most were around £700 irrespective of the policy type its a good result this time . Mine is only so low because I use my mums address (low crime area), have a high excess and never had an accident (which is why I trust myself with a high excess)

I'd like to know how an 18yr old girl, who flips burgers for a living, can afford a brand new/ish mini?

Many moons ago, when I bought a new(ish) metro (M) reg (just incase anyone thought it was one of those really oooold ones :D, I was quoted £1200 fully comp :o (car was only worth £7,500!! ) so went under my dads insurance until turned 21
Now, with 10+ no claims bonus, female, low risk area & with partner on, my fully comp is approx £350 (weirdly its cheaper if you have a partner on)
Anyway, this year insurance rose in excess of around 40%, so Im not surprised at all she pays £3000 (although I AM surprised she hasn't worked out a way round it instead and pays that)

yes, but you are judging it on your circumstances. Not considering Alex's....for all we know she may also have quite a few points on her licence (more than you! ;))

All these "workarounds" will invalidate the policy if you get found out, and in the event of an accident they WILL try to find out if they are liable!

A grand seems pretty reasonable to me for the coolest way to cruise around town, yes, this zippy convertible features shiny metallic wheels and black interior with signature zebra-print Barbie seats. What a fashionable way to roll! Ultra-sleek and sporty design. Comes with Barbie logo license plate. Also features holofoil headlights. Barbie Doll Not included. Recommended For Ages 5 Plus. ;)
I find that quite an average price for her age, i am 17 and passed in august this year,on the day i passed i was quoted £48,000 for a 1litre corsa 8 years old!!! However when my parents called their insurance company to see how much it would be for me on their policy and their car (peugeot 307) they said £2750, which for some stupid reason i agreed to and am skint every month as my part time job only just covers it lol
p.s. its not illegal if anyone thinks that, we checked with the company before we added me to policy

No wonder, but not worth it, the cops have these hand-held computer jobbies that can tell them if you have an MOT and if insured the name of the insurer, takes them about a minute to find out if they stop you! They also have Number Plate recognition cameras that give the same info!

Yeah it's very pricey. I waited until I was 21 to have my own car and my own insurance. From the ages of 17-21 I was just a named driver on my parents insurance. But it gave me chance to save up and have a car I can afford on my own :)
If my insurance doesn't go down next year I will be well pissed off. I have never been in an accident *touch wood* but a few months ago they said women have to pay the same as men. Pffft.

yeah, you really need to learn to sit on the fence a wee bit more !! :D
thanks to others who have confirmed that insurance rates for younger drivers can (and indeed do) reach up into the £000's brackets.
I think many people don't factor in all the different areas within an insurance policy that can make one hell of a difference - even one small accident for a younger, less experienced driver can drastically push the cost up.

Yeah true. She had a corsa. She's an only child and her parents split up so yeah they spoilt her with a 7 grand astra I think it cost and with 3 grand insurance. At a young age you should really only have a small car to run about in unless you have the money to burn.
But yeah insurance is expensive. I don't blame people who use public transport or wait a few years to get their own car.
Heres a pic of the insurance website, i know i said £48,000 and this says £43,000 but on the bit i took a pic of, they havent included the £5000 deposit on the next page

Going back years ago: my own insurance went up unbelieveably when I purchased my first convertible (was brand new so knew it was going to be dear) : I phoned them up, said I'd been given a quote (a few hundred quid less - which I hadn't... I just wanted to see how they would react if I threatned to take my business elsewhere). Direct Line it was.
Guess what: soon as I mentioned it, they could beat it by £1.
Told them to (everso politely) ram it - if they were happy to try to fleece a long standing customer - I wasn't interested and I went elsewhere (and actually got it for around what I'd pretended to Direct Line).

If you do enough 'scouting around'... the best part is: half of the less well known insurance companies (ie; name wise) - if you check and read the 'fine print' on the webpages: you tend to find that they are part of the larger banking / insurance companies anyway.... (ie;Lloyds TSB, Halifax etc).
I changed all my house insurances a while back: and the company I am with, is actually part of the company I was with anyway: same criteria, same policy details, same clauses, same excess : but at 1/3 of the price.
It pays to spend a bit of time reading through all the 'guff' sometimes.

I thought she had a convertible
18 year old Alex works at McDonalds and describes herself as a one-of-a-kind-pink-obsessed-Geordie who wants to be taken seriously. Alex previously worked as a flight-attendant. She is teetotal and always picks guys that treat her like a princess; she loves to be spoiled. She thinks that one day she will marry Dappy from N-Dubz and she would love to find romance in the house.
Alex owns a convertible with ‘Barbie’ emblazoned across the side and loves her gay Chihuahua, Tinkerbelle.
Alex describes herself as a cake: “soft, pretty and pink on the outside but when you bite into me I will turn sour”. Alex claims to hold grudges and never apologises saying “I don’t make mistakes, I’m a perfect person”.
 yeah, there is that, but there is a common misconception that young people especially male, are all boy racers
http://www.newsinsurances.co.uk/blog/who-are-the-worst-drivers-on-uk-roads/01691822
A recent survey by has found that van drivers are overwhelmingly considered the worst behaved on UK roads. The next worse were young drivers, older drivers, taxi drivers and school-run mothers. The poll, conducted by a motor insurance comparison service, also revealed that lorry drivers were considered the best drivers on the road.
The survey also reported that by car-type BMW’s had the worst drivers followed by Porsches, Audi and Mercedes-Benz drivers. The research, based on 1,500 UK motorists, further suggests that owners of Ford cars make the most car insurance claims. A spokesperson for the company said: “It’s good that most motorists recognise bad driving habits, both in themselves and other road users.
Other drivers best avoid German vehicles driven by young people ..... :joker:
Lorry drivers are the best?! They all go top speed of a whopping 56mph and try to overtake each other, meaning you get stuck behind two lorries because they end up in the middle lane
Its not so bad where theres a third lane but it drives me mad on the M62 in the parts where there are only 2 lanes and they shouldn't be allowed but can do it on a technicality
