Saw the Pilot the other day and it was really good i can see why there is so much interest in it it appeals to a wide audience, the characters are all really likable and the concept of the story is really good
the same people who wrote this wrote Lost as well :worship:

Lost Allusions

As a nod to the ties between the production teams of Once Upon a Time and Lost, the new show contains allusions to Lost, and is expected to be a continuing theme throughout the series.
In the Pilot episode, the clock tower is stuck at the time 8:15, an allusion to Oceanic flight 815.
It is also revealed in the pilot that Regina and Henry's house address is 108, an allusion to the button needing to pushed every 108 minutes.
In the pilot episode, a scene starts with a closeup of Emma's eye, which was a common scene starter in LOST.
Emma has a Geronimo Jackson bumpersticker, which was a fictional band sometimes mentioned in LOST.
In the episode Snow Falls, there are a bunch of crickets chirping followed by the signature sound of the smoke monster.
In the episode Snow Falls, Henry yells out, "We have to go back," alluding to the line uttered by Jack in the Season 3 finale.
In the episode The Still Small Voice, Henry is carrying the Apollo candy bars, which are the same candy bars in the Dharma food packages.

Pilot - Mainly Emma
Episode 2 - Regina ( Evil Queen )
Episode 3 - Mary ( Snow White )
Episode 4 - Ashley ( Cinderella )
Episode 5 - Archie ( jiminy cricket )

Finally some confirmation Mr Gold remembers the fairy-tale world. And great to see that Emilie De Ravin wasn't just a one off guest star and will be appearing again :amazed:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Once_Upon_a_Time_(TV_series)

Once Upon a Time is an American fairy tale drama television series.

Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis conceived the show in 2004, prior to joining the writing staff of Lost, but wanted to wait until that series was over to focus on this project.

Both Horowitz and Kitsis later emphasized that the series will focus more on the characters themselves and won't feature a "complex" storyline.

The show also has a similar premise to Bill Willingham's comic series Fables, to which ABC bought the rights in 2008, but never made it past the planning stages. Horowitz and Kitsis have "read a couple issues" of Fables but state that while the two concepts are "in the same playground," they believe they are "telling a different story."

As a nod to the ties between the production teams of Once Upon a Time and Lost, the new show contains allusions to Lost, and is expected to be a continuing theme throughout the series.

The show, as a production of Disney-owned ABC, contains multiple allusions to the Disney versions of the stories that form the basis for the series.

The pilot episode was watched by 13 million viewers. The show's next three episodes had consistent ratings every week with over 11 million viewers.

Personally, I'm not a fan of "fairy tales", Disney productions or overlong US TV series, so I'll give it a miss ..... :bored:

Marsh.

From what I remember those two guys were two of the worst writer's on Lost. I always disliked their episodes.

Locke.
26-03-2012, 01:44 AM
Yeah you're right, just checked the episodes they wrote and other than 2-3 of them none of them stand out.

I'm about 3 episodes behind on this, I liked it a lot at first but it is just dragging out a lot an nothing has really progressed from about 5 episodes ago. Robert Carlyle's character is amazing in it an that's the only reason I'll bother to carry on watching. There are Lost references/items in every episodes aswell which is quite good.

It isn't getting 14 million viewers either it's jumping between 8 and 10 million

I just watched it on Demand and I liked it,the only complaint that I can find is that it rushed some parts like when the boy met up with the main character.

Marsh.
01-04-2012, 11:15 PM
It reminded me of Lost season 6, with the other world/timeline/plane/afterlife where they need to remember their lives.

Watched it tonight on channel 5 for the first time. I really don't know what to make of it yet. I almost switched off ten minutes in because it was very cheesy and the evil queen's hammy acting made me cringe.

It did get better, I liked the developments, and the actress who plays the queen was much better in the "real" world but she needs to tone things down when acting out the fairytale scenes.

All in all it seems to have potential but could go either way with me. But Robert Carlyle was brilliant, part of me thinks his excellent performance is wasted on this show.

Locke.
01-04-2012, 11:21 PM
It has a lot of similarities to Lost but is far cheesier and feels more like a kids show, moves along a lot slower, too.

Thought the first few episodes were good, started picking up mid season, died completely and now has started coming along a bit more towards the end of the season.

But yeah, Robert Carlyle is the best thing about it by far.

19-09-2012, 04:41 PM
Really like this show, took a while for me to warm to it but I thought the last couple episodes of the season were brilliant. I wish the CGI was better though, it always looks so fake and cheap. Like the dragon in the season finale was piss poor, looked like something from an ancient Disney movie. Hope Mr Gold/Rumpelstiltskin gets lots of screentime in season 2, he's definitely my favorite character along with Regina.

Preview of the season premiere:

http://insidetv.ew.com/2012/09/19/once-upon-a-time-season-2-premiere-regina-faces-an-angry-mob-exclusive-video/

New characters for this season include Hook, Peter Pan, Mulan, Sleeping Beauty, Ariel, Sir Lancelot and Aladdin.

Mystic Mock
19-09-2012, 08:52 PM
I haven't watched the last 3 episodes yet, Regina is definitely the best thing about this show though and Snow White and Prince Boring need to go next season, I know it won't happen though as there really iconic Disney characters.

Locke.
16-02-2013, 04:47 PM
Just catching up with Season 2, about 6 episodes in. The general direction of it is a lot better but there's still a load of corny crap that ruins it, and the Snow White actress just can't act. The stuff in the other world with Mulan, Hook, Emma, etc really reminds me of Lost. And they need to get August back in it full time he is the best character, good to see him in the flashback before though

I actually remember seeing some people theorise that at the time of the Season 3 finale, but didn't think it would happen. It's not confirmed yet obviously, but there are filming pictures of Robin arriving back in Storybrooke with Zelena instead of Marian.

Oh, and Lily (Emma's childhood friend) arrives too, not sure how she re-enters the picture.

Is this on netflix?

No. Not the UK one anyway. :(

How many seasons are they so far?

The second half of Season 4 has just started.

is it worth watching?

That's subjective. Some love it, some don't. If you like things to do with fairy tales, fantasy, Disney etc, it's worth at least checking out. They always put their own twists on different stories, sometimes I really like the twists and sometimes I prefer the existing versions, but I really enjoy the show as a whole. :)

One of my favourite story twists was a certain well-known Disney protagonist being turned into a major villain. Of course, some purists were horrified that they'd alter a story that much, so the show clearly isn't for people who aren't open to cherished tales being changed around (which is the entire premise so I don't know why someone who wanted a straight adaptation would watch anyway ).

Here for messy drugged up Maleficent tbh.

 I wasn't expecting that, that's for sure.

I liked finally seeing Maleficent and Aurora interact, and actually seeing her put under the sleeping curse. It's also pretty interesting how they've split the character of Sleeping Beauty between the mother and daughter, with one having her name from the Disney animation and the other having her name from the original fairy tale.

As far as I know, in the original story, Sleeping Beauty was called Briar Rose and her daughter was called L'Aurore, but the animated movie gave the name Aurora to Sleeping Beauty instead. So yeah, a cool way to incorporate elements from both versions. :)

It is a shame we didn't get the christening scene though, but no doubt that would have led to more "Omg they're copying the Jolie movie" claims even though the scene didn't originate in that movie.

Tom4784
18-03-2015, 02:40 PM
Yeah. I thought they would have stuck closer to the Jolie film so I'm glad they've turned away from it at every opportunity.

Yep, I agree. Here's hoping King Stefan isn't the father of Maleficent's child.

I'm sure he's not, though. He'd have to be a special kind of twat to sleep with the woman who cursed his wife and daughter (considering we know she's pregnant years after this). I think people expected another villainous King Stefan because he was played by Sebastian Roche, who's known for that sort of role, but I'm happy with him being benevolent as he's usually known.

Oh, I hope not. I'm sick of him being so heavily involved in every backstory, especially those of the villains. :idc:

I really want a Camelot arc, with Morgan le Fay as an antagonist. Preferably, with no "Oh, she met Rumple years ago and he taught her magic" backstory. They confirmed in an interview than Maleficent isn't a fairy, so I'd like the Black Fairy (who I hope we actually get to learn about) is Morgan le Fay (considering "le Fay" actually means "the fairy").

It would also be cool to tie the Camelot arc in with the main arc of the show right now, the Sorcerer could be combined with Merlin, Morgan le Fay could have history with the Blue Fairy (who many believe has a large role to play in the show's endgame). And they've mentioned Camelot enough, time to actually see that story play out imo. :)

That's a good idea, I did think when they mentioned the Black Fairy in S3 that it could be set up for something. I don't think they'll do a Camelot arc though, I think all the arcs from here on out will be Disney based.

Hmm, I hope not, I like that the show doesn't just adapt straight from Disney but combines it with other things.

I also think it's a missed opportunity to keep referencing Camelot but never actually incorporate it fully into the story.

From the latest episode:

So, this Ursula and the Sea Goddess Ursula are two separate entities. I'm actually happy with that, there was too much inconsistency from "Ursula is a mythical, feared, super-powerful Goddess of the sea who nobody has seen in years" to "Oh, it's the sea witch, hey Ursula" so I'm pleased with this particular retcon (which I assume it is anyway ).

Tom4784
25-03-2015, 02:10 AM
I thought it was a decent episode, I thought Ursula's backstory was far too rushed and Poseidon turning up was convenient but I liked that they cleared up the inconsistencies of her character and why she wasn't all that bad compared to the other Queens.

I do hope this paves the way for the actual Ursula to show up though.

Cruella was like the weak link of all the villains at the beginning but she's come out as the top dog (geddit?). The show needs a full on psycho villain with no crying for redemption.

I loved this episode! I really liked how dark Cruella's backstory was, and how they put a twist on the "villain has a sympathetic and troubled past" formula. Nice swerve, show.

One tiny gripe is that it was a little convenient that the Author's car was black and white, and that when the magical ink spilled over Cruella it turned her hair black and white to match her Dalmation coat. But none of that really spoils the enjoyment of the episode for me. :)

Next week looks great too, with Emma and Lily reunited, apparently as enemies now.

Ugh that episode was so good. Cruella's such an amazing villain.

It was great to have a villain that was just plain evil to the core. Her storyline was probably the darkest they've ever done in OuaT and I hope we still get to see her in flashbacks, there's far too much about her story that is unexplained and I'm guessing her body will come into play at some point given that her hair contains that ink.

Marsh.
22-04-2015, 01:03 AM
I didn't think about the fact that her hair would contain ink. But it seems like they had the ingenious idea of that being the case without making it make much sense. But this is OUAT I suppose.
