New York upstart Azealia Banks has kept busy as of late, issuing a string of Best New Tracks and collaborating with the likes of Machinedrum and Lady Gaga stylist Nicola Formichetti. And now the rapper/singer is signed to the biggest label on the planet, Universal, as she announced today on Twitter.

"God dealt me a really ****ed up hand at birth," she wrote. "Half the **** I've been through & successfully gotten through would blow some of your minds. God just dealt me a new hand today."

Discussing the possibility of signing to a major in a recent Pitchfork interview, she said, "I want to do this thing-- and I don't even really know what the **** 'this thing' is yet-- but considering how ambitious my ideas are musically, I definitely need a label that will really get it out there. I'm not really scared of major labels. I just want to work where I'm allowed to make mistakes and do my own thing rather than get into a situation where someone else has their own agenda of what they want me to be."

Pitchfork reports that the latest offering from the rapper was used as the soundtrack to a Paris fashion show for the clothing line Mugler, whose creative director is Lady Gaga's stylist Nicola Formichetti.

Azealia Banks is the toast of the fashion world right now. The famed Chanel designer and king of excess Karl Lagerfeld seems particularly obsessed with the Harlem-bred rapper.

He designed her a sweater just like the Mickey Mouse one she wears in the "212" video-- but with his own silhouette woven into it-- and invited her to perform at his home in Paris this week. From Lagerfeld's house, Banks Tweeted, "Listening to The Blueprint over dinner with my friends & fam at @karllagerfeld HQ", and later, "This was what Karl served us for dessert last night" with a link to a photo of an iPad also with Lagerfeld's silhouette engraved on it. Decadent!

Azealia Banks has revealed that her debut album will be titled 'Broke With Expensive Taste' and that it will be released in September.

The rapper, who wrapped up her stint as the opening act on the NME Awards Tour alongside Two Door Cinema Club, Metronomy and Tribes on Saturday (February 25), told Nylon Magazine that the album's lyrical theme would be "a young girl trying to find it".

Asked about her album, the rapper replied: "It's called 'Broke With Expensive Taste' and it's coming out in September. The theme is a young girl trying to find it."

Then asked what she meant by ''find it'', Banks said: "Success! Herself! Her path! The young girl trying to make it! That girl who's at the end of her childhood trying to get a job and make some money, you know? She needs to get what she can get! She needs to go out there and show people she knows how to work for it."

The rapper will play a sold out show at London's Heaven venue tonight (February 27) and will release her debut EP, '212', on March 25. The EP will feature the track '212', as well as 'Liquorice' and a number of new remixes.

Azealia Banks posted on Twitter that an EP titled 1991 will be out April 17, featuring two brand new tracks: "1991" and "Grand Prix". Banks was meant to release the 212 EP this week in the UK on Polydor, but a lack of mention on iTunes, the label's website (and Banks') makes it unclear whether or not it's out.

Banks also Tweeted recently that she is working on a Lana Del Rey remix. She noted that Kanye West sent her a beat, presumably for a collaboration, and that she has a collaboration with the fashion designer Alexander Wang on the horizon.

A video for her Diplo/Master-D track "**** Up the Fun" may or may not actually be in the works, featuring "@diplo in a banana suit, doing the Harlem shake on 125th & lex in front of pathmark," but let's hope so.

Azealia Banks has cancelled her upcoming festival dates this summer.

The singer has pulled out of all five of her UK festival appearances, including Lovebox, Rockness, Park Life and Rough Beats.

A statement released by Banks's team said: "A decision has been made by her new management that she needs to get back into the studio and invest more time on her forthcoming debut album Broke With Expensive Taste."

Rough Beats festival organiser Mike McSherry admitted that he was "gutted" by the news, adding: "It would have been her first major headlining show in the UK and we were pretty chuffed about getting in there early and backing her to be a great act even before her debut releases.

"I think her management have made the right decision. As great as her Coachella performance was, the UK audience is going to need more than half hour of material from a headliner."

Azealia Banks has fallen out with Lil Kim after claiming the Brooklyn rapper doesn't write her own lyrics.

A fortnight ago, the Harlem hip-hop artist spoke about working with Kim on her forthcoming debut album 'Broke With Expensive Taste', but the relationship appears to have since turned sour. "Lil Kim got mad that I wrote a verse for her on a record I wanted her on, Banks explained, before adding:

However, Lil Kim's publicist CJ Carter has dismissed the claims. In a statement to AllHipHop, he said:

My client and Azealia have NEVER spoke to one another or met AT ALL…Kim was actually very flattered [by] Azealia’s public admiration for her, which is why it’s so hard to understand how someone who claims to be a true Lil Kim fan could flip the script so easily on someone who was supposedly their idol.


Carter added that Kim has "no desire to discuss the matter any further", concluding: "It honestly seems that someone from Azealia's team would rather have her fans buy into manufactured drama instead of buying music."

Banks has since responded by calling the spat "pathetic", stating: "For the record: I didn't make this a thing. Nor did anyone on my team. I never once made any statements about this."

Posting on her Tumblr site, the '212' star claimed that she wanted to be perceived as a "vocalist" instead – and also revealed she was deleting her Twitter account as it made her "too accessible".

Banks, who will release her new mixtape 'Fantasea' on July 4, published a post titled 'No Longer Wishing To Be A Rapper' and added:

I never was… and as soon as I started paying to bull**** urban media, I started getting myself in trouble. From now I'm a vocalist, and will not be associating myself with the "rap game"… or whatever the **** that means.

I think it's unlikely she'll score another hit like 212 some time soon because it was just excellent and new and exciting and whatever, but some of her other tracks have been very high quality too (Jumanji, Van Vogue, Liquorice). It's just a shame there've been some duds (Aquababe).

Plus her guest features on other songs have been pretty good (Shady Love, Blue Jeans)... but it's still early days, she's still only put out ONE EP.

Azealia Banks has revealed that her new mixtape 'Fantasea' will feature a cover of a track by 90s rave icons The Prodigy - click on the image above to watch a video of the interview.

Speaking to NME backstage at BBC Radio One’s Hackney Weekend, where the singer performed alongside the likes of Rihanna, Lana Del Rey and Dizzee Rascal, Banks stated that the tape has, "a sea theme, but it’s less obviously mermaid stuff and more like witchy hip-hop and some real rave ****," before divulging that she "covers Prodigy on there."

Yesterday, Banks tweeted that 'Fantasea' will now be released on July 11 instead of its originally planned date of July 4, which follows a host of cancelled festival dates and the delayed release of previous EP '1991'.

mixtapes are always free and distributed by the artist usually, they can contain other songs by other artists or snippets of current songs or can be used as Azealia is as some material that will get people interested in getting her main album.
