I think it was just supposed to be a teaser cloaked in darkness so you couldn't see the design (i.e.. secret) but everyone took it as the official design.

That's exactly it. It's the most sensible theory I've seen anyway.

It was a teaser, all the lights were off... it was prepping you for the big unveiling. It was a secret what the eye would look like...

The new eye is growing on me though.
