View Full Version : Was "Queen Bee Task" Racist?!

It's been said that a way of discerning if something is racist or not is to reverse the ethnicities and see how it looks from that persepctive.
With this in mind, let's say Hazel had been made Queen Bee and had been giving Gina electric shocks on her arse and telling her to work harder.
Then let's reverse the colour of all the other HM's. In other words, a white Queen Bee with 7 black drones slaving for her.
Then let's say Hazel made a slur / jibe about Gina's ethnicity (the way Gina just called Hazel a "Paddy").

^Nope. Just reversed the colours. Pretty simple really.

Now that you mention it, YES , it would make VERY uncomfortable viewing if the colours were reversed!!!
As for Gina calling Hazel a 'paddy'... can you imagine if Hazel called Gina a n***er?!

Hazel also has dark skin so the op make no sense :nono::nono::nono:

No this isn't 1940's Washington.
This is just a bunch of people dressed up as bees.
BTW Paddy isn't a race and I never actually heard her say that?

It's so frustrating to see racism being implied. You are over thinking and twisting logic out of all sense and proportion
If you are a psychology fan that might well explain such a wide off the mark suggestion.

^It's not about tones and shades. Hazel is ethnically Caucasian. Gina identifies herself as Black (remember how she got offended at being the term "mixed"?!)
Also, Gina is the FIRST person to scream "racism"! ("You're not attracted to Black men?! RACIST!!!")
Can you imagine if she had to be a drone for queen Hazel?!

I definitely don't think Gina was chosen for Queen Bee because she's black.

Anyway in answer to your question NO seeing as in your logic it wasn't reversed therefor not racist :)

Didn't hear her say it either,so can't comment!
However,Paddy is an offensive term, just like the "N" word, even though Paddy and the "N" word are both not races!!!

Paddy as in St Patrick? Padded bra?

I think this point is null and void because she said bra, but if someone did say that I'd agree, but since no one did:/

I'd take offence being called a paddy. Racist undertones. BB & BOTS.
Plus Irish undertones last year too.
(Emma + Ian)... Do not like Irish people.

Can't comment on the use of Paddy, as I didn't hear it said (though paddy is absolutely a derogatory term for Irish), but the reversing the colours method of determinng racism is something of a blunt tool. It can work and effectively point up racism, but not always, and I don't think in this instance.
If it were reversed and a white HM was treating an all black group of HMs as slaves, then that could be very uncomfortable, because there is a legacy in our society from the enslavement of black Africans by white Europeans/Americans in the not so very distant past, the institutional racism towards black people in the recent past, along with a contemporary power disparity between black and white.
The same has never been true in reverse. There is no legacy of slavery, nor contemporary power imbalance to call upon if you reverse the colours.
The only way this task could have been made racist with Gina as a black woman in charge of white subordinates, is if they were playing mistress and slave/servant and therefore overtly calling upon a reversal of that legacy; and then it would be racist against black not white, because along with subjugation of black people, came fear of 'the black man having the whip hand over the white man' - in other words any call upon the legacy of the system of slavery can only really be racist against the victims of that system. And even then, in the context of a small group of housemates, in which her personality has been identified as a the house diva, and in which she has effectively been fighting it out for alpha female with another house mate, it's a stretch.
As it is, they were roleplaying bees. Someone had to be Queen Bee. It was Gina.

She was on about her bra! Some people should maybe watch each show twice just to make sure they have really heard what they think they have. This thread is pointless!

Pretty sure Paddy Bra was meant to be Padded Bra so no racism there. I think we have enough to be annoyed about with the "bullying" aspect of last nights show without introducing a racism angle as well.

Great OP.
I'm fed up of racist bees buzzing around me each summer. It's a shame really, as every bee is technically mixed race, so you'd think they'd show a little more self awareness.

Wow, that's the worst example I've ever seen of someone looking for racism where it isn't there. By the op's standards, the next time a boxer of African origins fights a a boxer of European origins, then every punch thrown could be called a rascist attack.

I just think certain narrow minded living in past empire loving white people herr do need to accept that there are black people who are more affluent, educated, sophisticated, and successful. Judging by some comments on here and eleswhere about accents, money and education, people need to come to terms with a new world order where growing numbers black people (and Asian heritage people ) go to top elite establishments ala Cambridge uni, go to posh bag stores in zurich ala Oprah, attend the classic Proms, and are better spoken than alot of white people.
Some of the tweedle dees here who feel that all blacks are the same, and a black person can't be posh are deluded. Non white people are the growing middle class. You're actually more likely to find a black Nigerian, Middle Eastern race or Chinese national splashing out on a £20k watch on Old Bond Street.
Deal with this and truth will set you free.

I didn't know that thing called Gina had called Hazel a "paddy", BB yet again letting the vile creature get away with being abusive. Is there no end to how low it (the thing called Gina) will go?.
And she goes on about having class while in her opinion, no-one else in the house does.:nono:
