Star Wars is held in this stupidly high regard because it was cool at the time of the release but in my opinion it hasn't stood the test of time and I don't care how many franchise reboots or products are released, it's still overrated immensely simply because the generation who experienced it upon release won't let go of the past and accept that times have changed, special effects have improved dramatically and really it's not all that impressive now.

I think they're better because the effects are better due to technology having improved dramatically. The actual plot of the films is piss poor, it's basically just a nerd's wet dream because it's got cool effects and that's why people won't admit it's not all that great as far as films go.

And by extension, I think people don't judge her as much as they should because of the assault incident. If she were an ugly woman, I don't think people would have cared all that much.

I'm not defending him, I'm saying she has shown an extremely nasty side to herself over the last few years and the fact she's forgiven him and they're back together suggests that she didn't even feel like a victim, it was a personal thing between the two of them and clearly there was room for resolution. If she felt that he was a mindless monster who assaulted her for no reason at all, do you think she would have forgiven him? I don't, I think she knew she'd pushed him and even though what he did was horrible, what he did clearly didn't come from nowhere or she wouldn't be with him again.

I could believe this about HIV/AIDS - there is no logical reason why they haven't found a way to cure it. With cancer, there are just some cases where it's impossible (with current technology) to operate and therefore it's terminal, and there are so many types of cancer that there's probably not one cure-all... but with HIV/AIDS, they've got all the resources and there are cases of people being cured of it and people having a normal quality of life, so to me that suggests there is a cure, but it's being withheld...

Perhaps it was like cases with 1000's of other people who have been the victim of domestic assualt, she was still too much in love with him/felt that he had learned from his mistakes?

It doesn't. I didn't say it did. What I'm saying is that, considering it was an isolated incident in their relationship, I believe she provoked him because of that very nasty side to her personality. They weren't together for a couple of years after the incident, and then they got back together. It's not like he beat her up and she kept going out with him regardless - it's different to an abusive relationship.

But you don't know if she provoked him, you don't know what was said, so therefore I find saying 'I can see why Chris Brown hit Rihanna' doesn't have much basis to it. The whole 'nasty side' to her personailty just boils down to opinion, we don't know the ins and outs of the relationship between them.. maybe after that time she had forgiven him? It doesn't mean that she was at fault. The fact that he did so in the first place means that something there isn't right with him.

It's just my controversial opinion, I'm not trying to pass it off as truth, it's mere speculation on my part. Having witnessed abusive relationships in real life, I see a marked difference between sustained abuse and the isolated incident between Rihanna and Chris Brown. That's why I believe what happened between them is not quite as clear cut as people generally accept it to be.

If things happened the way I imagine they did, it's not like either party is going to open up and talk about it. If Rihanna said she was at fault, people would say she's defending him. If Chris said she was at fault, people would furiously accuse him of not being sorry. But the fact Rihanna consistently defends what he did, the fact they're back together and the fact he's never beaten her up since, suggests to me that while he does have rage issues, they're generally under control unless he's provoked. Not many people are angry for no reason at all.

Oh dear, I did not stand up for Chris Brown, I hate him for what he did. I was just saying I can see how people can lose their tempers at times, especially if they happened to be provaced with a bracket saying not that Rihanna did provoke him, so in general.

Yeah, but I believe she said or did something to piss him off. He was driving a car at the time, do you really believe he just suddenly flipped out for absolutely no reason and took it out on Rihanna? That doesn't mean she deserved what he did to him and it doesn't excuse him at all, because beating someone up is wrong regardless of why it happened, but it's my belief that she provoked him. If he assaulted her for absolutely no reason, she wouldn't be with him.

Can't agree with that at all tbh, through things I've seen plenty of women have gone back to partners despite unprovoked attacks, for different reasons (believing that they've changed, trusting them again etc)

Women are responsible for abuse they suffer if they provoke their partner.

Answer: False. Perpetrators of domestic abuse always have a choice about whether or not to use abuse, threats or other controlling behaviour or not in situations of conflict, discussions or arguments or simply where they want to get their own way. The victim may disagree with the perpetrators’ views, want to discuss a dispute in the household or wish to do something that the perpetrator doesn’t want her to do. That doesn’t mean she has provoked abuse, though this will often be the way victims, perpetrators and others describe it. (Source: Gondolf, 2002; Dobash et al, 2000)

I guess that we don't read into it because there isn't any real evidence in the first place. Couples will argue, bicker and what not, we've probably all witnessed it, with most partners being able to control their actions. Rihanna might be nasty or whatever, but neither of them have really duldged into what was said before hand, so it's anybodies guessing game.

I kind of agree with the transgender thing... but then maybe I'm a bit ignorant when it comes to transgendered people, I don't know any personally; my views are more based on the fact I know a drag queen and he is the biggest attention seeker I know and I suppose I associate them with transgender people, perhaps I shouldn't.

Certainly I don't think there's much difference between an extremely effeminate gay man and a man wishing to be a woman - they're both attracted to men, both embrace feminine culture over masculine culture... I don't really see much of a difference.

Certainly I don't think there's much difference between an extremely effeminate gay man and a man wishing to be a woman - they're both attracted to men, both embrace feminine culture over masculine culture... I don't really see much of a difference.

Most people are ignorant to transgenderism, it's not something that's openly discussed in this country so of course not many people are going to understand it. Homosexuality was in the same predicament until more gay people started appearing in public life and people began to see them as equal and understand different sexualities. I don't really hold it against anyone because it's a societal problem not an individual one, as long as people aren't total ******s and refuse to call people by the gender they wish to be known as (that's just a respect thing IMO, like if somebody changed their name to Kitchen Sink you should have to call them by that too) then they can think what they want to be honest

There's a lot of stuff I still don't understand about transgenders but it's a fascinating subject, what we need as a society is more discussion and research to be able to understand it, unfortunately it's not really an issue and so those that actually have to go through it are left at the bottom of the pile, just as many other minorities have been and still are

As a side note there's biological males that wish to become female but are attracted to females, they are gay though as a result. So it's not always a case of trying to hide their sexuality and actually to go against that I'd personally say that admitting to being homosexual would be much easier than admitting you wanted to change gender, the latter is something much less accepted which would cause more trouble than it's worth so I'm not totally buying that argument :suspect:

I'm not labelling people from other countries as anything Ben, but there's an awful lot of scroungers come here and get everything going. Other countries wouldn't accept it, why do we? My point is not to have a pop at these people although I don't like what they do, it's our Governments and systems that allow it to go on.

Your wording in the first sentence of that other post said otherwise about immigrants.

If people avoid getting personal about other TiBB members and discuss other peoples' controversial opinions in a mature and productive way then there is no reason for this thread to be closed.

Exactly

Depends what you define as 'vile', describing Dexter or Gina as that would be pathetic. Dennis BB9 yes...and in which case I wouldn't support them

I'm not getting into a debate on this again LOL until January but in short people watch TV for escapism, it isn't real life and for the most part it shouldn't reflect real life because it's meant to be an exaggerated version of it for entertainment. People I wouldn't associate with in real life are exactly the kind of people that make these shows worthwhile cause they're interesting and entertaining. If I wanted to watch nice people drink tea I'd visit the local retirement home, quite simply. Watching that on TV isn't engaging and from a producer perspective it's not profitable either

The more on-the-cusp a TV show is of being potentially offensive and boundary pushing, the better
