We find the show having pitched its tents in Jupiter, Fla., in 1952, amid bad times that are about to get worse. The young medium of TV is leaching away the audience from roadside attractions. (Goodbye, Human Skeleton–hello, Red Skelton!) On top of that, bodies are turning up dead, the work–at least most of them–of a serial killer, a hulking, shabby, silent clown (John Carroll Lynch) wearing a mask with a leering smile. He’s unconnected with the freak show (so far as we can tell), but the carnies–mistrusted under the best of circumstances–are automatic suspects, leaving ringmistress Elsa Mars (Jessica Lange) under pressure of money and the law.

We should all only hope that someone, someday, loves us as much as AHS loves Lange. Murphy and co-creator Brad Falchuk have again cast her as an imperious, jealous, yet somehow sympathetic diva, this time with a Teutonic twist. (Whether doing a southern drawl on Coven, a Yankee rasp on Asylum or her Weimar cabaret-croon here, too much accent is never enough for her.) When a local hospital comes across conjoined twins Dot and Bette Tattler (Sarah Paulson and Sarah Paulson), two heads and spines sharing a torso and limbs, Elsa sees her new headliner–or doubleheadliner–and her own ticket to fame.

Lange is both star and muse for AHS, which has used her over and again as a glamorous, tragic villain. She’s is fearsome and motherly here, plotting and dreaming of fame, controlling but also protective of the performers she calls her “monsters”–like a German Lady Gaga with a touch of Marlene Dietrich and John Cameron Mitchell’s Hedwig. (The premiere sells the latter parallel by giving her a show-stopping climactic performance–David Bowie’s glam-rock classic “Life on Mars”–whose anachronism is justified, beyond the play on Elsa’s surname, by the simple fact that it is awesome.)

It’s Paulson, though, who gets the show’s killer role(s). Bringing her to walking, talking two-headed life is achievement enough. In the rough cut screened for critics, there’s an uncanny-valley effect to the CGI that it’s possible the final air version will smooth out. But the real special effect is Paulson, who invests the two sisters with such distinct personalities–Dot suspicious and rigid, Bette naive and starstruck–that I quickly forgot about the wizardry and saw them as people joined in an unhappy partnership. (They even have different opinions on the morality of masturbation, a bit of a problem when you share both hands and genitalia.) The way the two Paulsons carry themselves and react to each other–even argue–is a triumph of both editing and performance. She’s her own best co-star, playing her own worst enemy.

Like many an AHS season, the early going of Freak Show is a stew of ideas about identity and desire, plus a lot of things that appear to come up because they’re weird or provocative or look cool. There’s a theme of how the majority society is repulsed by alterna-bodies but also finds them intoxicating, even erotic; Jimmy “Lobster Boy” Darling (Evan Peters), for instance, finds that his large, fused fingers make him popular with the ladies behind closed doors, even if he can’t order in a diner without trouble.

Peters is one of several returnees from the AHS Repertory Players. We’re also re-introduced to Angela Bassett, Frances Conroy, and Kathy Bates, as Jimmy’s protective mother the bearded lady, whose heavy accent, if I’m hearing correctly, I place somewhere in the greater Philadelphia area with a couple of detours to the south. Newcomers to the troupe include Michael Chiklis, playing strongman Dell Toledo–someone had a lot of fun with the names this season–who emerges in the second episode as Elsa’s business rival.

But who are the monsters here? The show finds itself both critiquing the fear of the Other and–what with its murderous clown and various other bloody twists–feeding that same fear. This may be the old message that if you tell someone they’re a threat long enough, they eventually become one. But we’re also talking American Horror Story, which has a history of simply going for the most intense choice in any given moment, emotional or narrative consistency be damned. It works better more on the level of a dream than an essay. In AHS: Asylum, that grew into a stunning story of totalitarian control; in last year’s Coven, it slopped formlessly everywhere like a cauldron bubbling over. But no refunds! That’s the kind of show you bought yer ticket for.

And it’s a damned fine-looking one. From the premiere (directed by Murphy), its palette is more luscious and vibrant than past AHS seasons; the animated opening credits–sprightly deformed skeletons capering about–are ghastly and terrific. The show has a vintage-collector’s delight in the details of this specific brand of horror. (Among the nods to the 1932 horror classic Freaks, the first episode uses the signature phrase “one of us” two times.)

I’d be lying if I said I had any idea where this is going; after the two episodes screened for critics, despite all the accumulated bodies, Freak Show is more style than story. (The killer-clown plot, for instance, is terrifying without really being engaging. The early scenes in which he abducts and terrorizes a young woman and a small boy are tough to take, but he’s more monster than character so far.) But there’s enough talent and intensity here for me to step behind the tent flap, to see if all this can cohere into something super freaky.
ooo

I liked it. The clown is terrifying and Evan Peters has finally been given an interesting character after being stuck playing the love interest for two seasons. The only problem I have with it so far is that there's not really much going on in terms of story, they spent all episode introducing characters but forgot to include an overall plot.

Marsh.

Isn't the plot that Elsa and her gang are trying to get the show to be a success so they can stay on the land longer than a month? With her "headliners" being the twins?

Then you have the clown serial killer.

I wouldn't say that either plotline is strong at the moment. The clown stuff is great but he'll lose the creepy factor once we get used to him. Unless they kickstart something next episode there's not really a strong foundation for the story to go anywhere yet.

It's visually strong and intriguing and I enjoyed it but they really need to inject more story into it.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Let’s start with the opening credits. They’re animated this year. What made you want to switch it up?

There’s a lot of startling imagery in them. There’s a lot of clues. A lot of goodies in them for the fans like things that are going to be happening. Like when you watch the Coven titles and you watch all 13 episodes of Coven, you’re like “That makes sense.”
- Interesting. Now I wanna rewatch the intro.

The first episode really zeroes in on Elsa, Jimmy and the twins. Are they what the focus of the season will be?

So the first one is about Elsa and Bette and Dot and Jimmy. Then the second one you spend a lot of time with Kathy Bates and Chilies and Angela Bassett. Then in the third one you meet Emma Roberts and Denis O’Hare. That’s when the story coalesces. It’s a slower rollout than we’ve ever done.

Twisty might be one of the scariest creations you guys have done. Who came up with him?

You see the bottom part of his face in episode two. But in episode four we spend a lot of time with that and you see it more and you learn what is going on with him and it’s really awful and scary.

Will we eventually understand his end game?

Yeah you will find out very early on, like why is he collecting children in the school bus?

And at the end he sees the freak show troupe disposing of the cop’s body. Will he hold that over them?

Well yeah. All I’ll say about that is Twisty is not to be trusted. He’s specifically plotting something and you find out why he’s doing what he’s doing.

He seems to not like the freak show and we’ll find out why?

Oh yeah. He hates them.

And then Grace Gummer returns after being in Coven. Is that character going to recur?

Oh yes. I love her. She’s very talented. The Peppermint Girl comes back. I’m not going to say for good or for bad.

Dandy and Gloria Mott are the opposite end of the spectrum. She seems a little too attached and he seems like a grown child.

Well that’s our homage to “What would Norman Bates have been like if he lived in Florida?” He’s a boy who was born into great life and privilege and on the outside has it all but on the inside he feels like a freak. So he wants to be somewhere where he fits in. So when he’s not allowed to, he becomes dark and murderous. I love all those scenes that Franny and Finn have together. It’s fun to rich those rich, pampered people who are on the outside are so beautiful but on the inside are the biggest monsters of them all.

Elsa sings Bowie’s “Life on Mars” at the end. So there will be modern music this season?

Well we don’t do a lot of them this season. Maybe we only have five numbers. I love what he does with his movies like Great Gatsby and Moulin Rouge where you don’t play period stuff, you do stuff from all eras that fit the story. So we decided we only were going to highlight musical artists who at some point in their career had identified themselves as feeling like freaks or misfits or outcasts, which our people are going through. That’s why we do David Bowie, Fiona Apple, Lana Del Rey, Kurt Cobain. We do people who sort of have the same feelings as our characters do.

The big reveal at the end is that Elsa has no legs. When will we learn what happened?

There’s an episode coming up where you get her backstory but then as we go on you get more and more backstories.

Does it involve her being in Germany during the war?

No. We’re not doing any war thing at all.

Are they gonna be like Bonnie & Clyde?

Well let it suffice to say that Dandy becomes Twisty’s apprentice.

[Matt Bomer] Is he part of the freak show?

Mmm I don’t wanna say too much because I think if I say one thing it will give it away. But it’s something Matt has never played before, which was interesting for him.

Has there been more talk of Neil Patrick Harris coming on?

Yeah I spoke to Neil last week. He sort of had an idea of what he wanted to do, and I had an idea that he liked.

I’m guessing Gabourey Sidibe is later since you told me her character arrives after her mother, Patti LaBelle, goes MIA?

Yeah, she comes later for, like, three episodes.

And have you figured out season 5?

Yes, I have figured it out. I’m already meeting with actors about asking them to play roles.

Can you say anything about it?

Noooooooo! But there are clues in the first two episodes because I figured out season 5 very early on and I know that the fans love that. So there are clues that are dropped.

Dandy becoming Twisty's apprentice ;o

..I agree with Smithy, I was a bit underwhelmed..but at the same time, it was just introducing some of the characters and their back stories..I just hope it's not mainly that through it all and that the storyline itself is strong...anyway, a good start and Elsa singing Life on Mars was a highlight for me....I love her character and her accent...Twisty is incredibly creepy..:worry:...oh the other thing I just thought was that he reminded me a bit of Heath Ledgers 'Joker' and maybe his past will be some cruelty to him/disfiguiring his mouth etc..also I was slightly reminded of the Chicken Coop victims when the two young people were in the caravan...so maybe it's feeling like a bit of a 'mash' of different things atm but it's just one episode..it's also like the XMen with their powers only there not powers as such so probably nothing like it at all.....I love Bette and Dot, Sarah Poulson's chacters are always so interesting...

okay i just rewatched it. She definitely has a twin sister. That's why she's so obsessed with the other twins and why she said "you are so lucky to have a sister" when she first met the siamese twins. She's definitely a twin too. or maybe a clone, some kind of nazi experiments with DNA cloning...

I thought it was just a representation of Elsa's dream, watching herself as the star of the show. Then we get to the harsh reality at the end that the sequence that what we just saw was in her imagination. In reality there was no fancy lighting, no stage sets, no great singing... just Elsa standing there, singing terribly in a failing show. That's how I interpreted it anyway.

OR she has a twin sister who is actually a superstar, and Elsa's real vision is of her sister singing on stage, with Elsa continuing to live a fantasy superstar lifestyle when in reality she is running a failing show.

Bit hard to think up theories after one episode.

I think we can all agree that kathy bates is a lesbian in love with jessica lange right???? that couldn't have been more obvious, she was even wearing plaid like a ****ing lumberjack trucker.

She looks like she just finished filming a new season of Ice Road Truckers FFS.

but the way it was made so obvious i don't know, are they trying to throw us off? she was totally lesbionic though. If Jessica's pussy was a night club, Kathy would be the bouncer. wtf.

btw one thing i forgot to mention was what was up with that big sex orgy thing that Elsa was watching when that woman came in saying she'd been raped?

i think the implication was that Elsa lured the girl in and got her hooked on drugs, and then lets the freaks use her as a sex toy. It's one of the ways Elsa controls the freaks, providing them with sex and drugs. It was horrific though. basically she lured in a small town girl and let her freaks have their way with her. I think i found that scene the most upsetting. it was like she was telling a girl who had been raped, no you haven't been raped, i have this video of you clearly enjoying it. (but she was a young girl drugged on opium)

it was very ****ed up.

You could see the horror on the girl's face while watching it, clearly she had no memory of it, and she is basically now blackmailed into staying with the freak show or keeping her mouth shut because Elsa has this video now. she's basically a sex slave and addicted to opium now. It's horrific.

It's disappointing that it looked like Pepper was very involved with the rape. I was hoping that Pepper would be better than that. I always felt like she was a sympathetic character, but I guess not.

Asylum was all about power struggles between institutions and individuals, huge bodies of great power (the church, the government, the nazis, the aliens) against small individual people,. the lesbians, the redneck boy in an interracial relationship. Coven was all about power struggles between mothers and daughters (and fathers and sons, and mothers and sons-bloodyface story line), I'm thinking this season is all about power struggles between siblings, sisters. It seems like the power struggles are going in order from largest to smallest.

Bloodyface was asylum not coven, Ryan says each season does have a running theme, but asylum was sanity and coven was feminism (iirc it might not have been), I don't see there being a sibling theme this season, seeing as there's no proof that pepper has a brother, it's just that Elsa found a male pinhead

Not sure if anyone posted this already... but here's Ryan on Matt Bomer, Neil Patrick Harris and the return of Jamie Brewer.

Do you know what Matt Bomer is playing?
Yeah, we wrote that part. Then I wrote Matt said and said you have first offer of refusal. He said “What is it?” because he was getting ready to do Magic Mike XXL. When I told him the role, he immediately said yes and cut a week out of his schedule and came down to New Orleans and shot that episode which might be one of our most horrendous episodes ever. But Matt loved doing it.

Is he part of the freak show?
Mmm… I don’t wanna say too much because I think if I say one thing it will give it away. But it’s something Matt has never played before, which was interesting for him.

As for Neil Patrick Harris, who’s expressed an interest in appearing on the show, Murphy says its still a distinct possibility. “He sort of had an idea of what he wanted to do, and I had an idea that he liked,” he tells EW. “So I’m going to call him next week. If I can make it work, it will be something that shoots at the end,”

What his role will be is unknown, but Murphy remarked “obviously Neil is a magician and likes all that magic stuff… I’m optimistic.”

And fans of AHS regular Jamie Brewer should know Murphy wants to squeeze her in this season, as well. ” I like our troupe of people to come in and out. Sometimes it’s a whole season long arc and sometimes its an episode,” he reveals. “All of our people I always try to keep their hand in in some regard.”

I like that they aren't over working the "struggling Freak Show" angle. When I first read it, I thought, "how interesting can multiple episodes of Jessica Lange singing to a crowd of 1 and then crying be?" I thought it was going to be the main storyline, but it isn't really. The arcs that they're setting up are really good so far.

I really like the musical numbers too. I think Murphy's mentioned that he took inspiration from Baz Luhrmann, but even then I couldn't imagine them being this good.

Tom4784
16-10-2014, 04:52 PM
I thought it was a much stronger episode than the first one.

The clown has already lost his edge but I like that they're teaming him up with Dandy, I'm not sure if this particular story line has legs though and I disliked how they revealed what was under the clown's mask already. That reveal should have happened further down the line.

I'm not sold on Micheal Chiklis' character just yet, it doesn't help that the role is typical Chiklis-esque. I hope there's more twists and turns to come for his character since, at the moment, he's a walking talking plot device. Desiree seems interesting although underused at the moment so I hope that will change. Overall I like where this series is going, hopefully it doesn't pull a coven and completely derail itself at the halfway mark.

It wasn't listed, so I clicked on episode one then used the 'next episode' button, and it was there.. :)

just finished ep 2

it was better than ep 1 but I hate the strong man, I can just tell hes going to annoy me all season. I'm presuming Jimmy is his son?

I'm not sure what to make of this series yet, its moving very slowly, hopefully it picks up a bit in the next couple of eps

Shaun

ok this is what i don't like about the show:

- ryan murphy is involved
- too much singing, idc how good the songs are, i don't want them sung by poor singers :idc: save it for glee, murphy :fist:
- the camerawork is really distracting and cheesy and quick and annoying, like the scene where jimmy/strongman were fighting and it kept switching to their faces
- too many periphery 'freak' characters, there's no chance we're going to be given chance to know all of them; hence, me not giving a flying toss about that weird Meep thing
- also the story's a bit higgledypiggledy... like dandy just decides to take up kidnapping/murder? twisty doesn't just kill him? jimmy didn't think to make sure strongman wasn't looking when he planted the evidence? it's all quite silly.

i'll keep watching but idk this is why i stopped watching murder house

just because you don't understand it now doesn't mean that it makes no sense, we are only 2 eps in. did you ever consider that maybe there is a plot line between dandy and the clown that hasn't been exposed yet? for all you know it could be his father.

..yeah I was thinking that there was a storyline that was going to connect them and that would also tie in with Dandy wanting to be a 'freak' and that maybe in some way he is but doesn't know it..also why did Twisty not kill the children and why in a way does he 'care' for them by bringing them toys..I think there is a storyline to be revealed that will connect all of those things and it's why he became a 'clown' ...maybe it will be part of a final twist...

I just took Dandy and Twisty's 'friendship' (?) as Dandy being a sever case of good boy gone bad. The last two episodes set Dandy as a spoiled sheltered kid, always mentioning how bored he was in his mom's house. That's why he wanted to run away to the circus and later just ended up liking the excitement of being around a murderer. He liked that he was doing something different, something bad.

Maybe there's something more to it, but I think it's just part of Murphy's hyperbolic style. Everything's exaggerated, but it's definitely inspired. Ya know that theory about preacher's daughters being the wildest ones. I kind of just think it's a twist on that kind of idea.

..like if you could have anything in the world, which is what Gloria gives him..it would all become incredibly non exiting ..so he would have to explore 'evil' for a thrill..?..

Donovan.
20-10-2014, 04:42 AM

Actually, that's exactly it, and so much simpler than I put it

Ammi
20-10-2014, 04:50 AM
Yeah basically. That's what I thought was propelling him.

..yeah it could be, that everything materialistic bores him because there is nothing that he can't have..I can see with that his longing to be a 'freak' because he idolises them..that they are different and he feels ordinary, this is something he can't have because money can't buy it... and Twisty is the ultimate freak so attaching himself to him and becoming part of his evil is probably more exciting than anything in his life..I think why I thought there may be some connection/some twist to be revealed is what the reason though why Twisty didn't kill him or Gloria...what makes them 'so special' to him...

Donovan.
20-10-2014, 04:58 AM
Yeah I don't get Twisty's killing pattern either. Hopefully his M.O. will get explained. I remember reading somewhere that the reason Twisty's kidnapped the boy and the girl will be explained, but I don't know if they'll explain why them specifically or just why he needs to kidnap people.

..I'm guessing..(but it's just an initial thing so I'm probably wrong....)..that someone did something to him as a child, he had an horrific experience and it could have involved a clown but it's what caused his disfigurements and so that he became someone that people couldn't physically look at because of how he looked...maybe it even involved his own mother, which is why he atm is fascinated with Dandy and Gloria and hasn't yet killed them...and it's also why he's 'protective' of children because in his damaged head, he's 'keeping them safe' and protecting them from adults in a way that he wasn't protected...I think that maybe there is 'sense' to who the people are that he kills or what they represent/associate to him and that will be revealed..and maybe atm, Dandy and Gloria for some reason associate with a 'good memory' or one he himself would have liked to have had...like for us, we think of Gloria and Dandy's relationship and world fairly screwed up but for him, it's a 'perfection/an ideal'..?...this is all totally rubbish of course.....was a very good second episode I thought though...

Ammi
20-10-2014, 05:15 AM
..also Donovan..I think they both want to be each other..Dandy wants to be Twisty and a 'freak' because to him, his life lacks 'different' and unique and Twisty wants to be Dandy because to him, Dandy's life represents 'mothers love'...so will somehow they become each other..hmmmmm....(yeah, I have a weird imagination..)...

Smithy
20-10-2014, 07:47 AM
I think the people twisty killed are targeted, hopefully it'll be explained, I think the reason he hates the freak show is because he wanted in but was rejected and that's why he and dandy have kind of bonded

Maybe it's just me, but Elsa feels too similar to Fiona. They're both aging stars holding out hope for more fame or power. They both even tried to kill the next upcoming star with knives, because they thought that she'd outshine them (Madison, and Dott). Hopefully it's just because I only have two episodes to compare the two on, but as the season progresses I hope they'll give her a really different story arc.
