..yeah, I do think that he's someone who has little self belief and no matter how successful he is and how much adoration he gets, he's probably really bothered by any tiny criticism he may get and that's what he believes...and I do think that offending anyone is something that really bothers him...

I wonder if that's linked to his depression though - I actually just finished reading a passage on 'criticism' (he used to do a book review in some magazine when he was starting out to be successful), where he felt awful for tearing an author to pieces, although it was supposedly an absolutely terrible, even immoral book (I'm curious as to what it was LOL) but then felt awful for weeks after it was published in case the author read it (apparently he/she did)... which to me seems odd, I suppose, as an amateur :laugh: I don't know if you can really stumble into reviewing and then go "oh I feel bad now"... it depends what you say I suppose... but certainly with depression there's a spiralling way the mind will try to make you doubt yourself and good in the world, and although obviously criticism is such a tiny part of it lol, it did make me think.

I don't know how I'd feel if someone read a review that was trashing them. I've certainly had band-members retweet negative reviews but the few where I've truly been "please stop making music you are an awful human being" (Black Eyed Peas' last album for example)... I sort of assume that most acts have tough skin and ignore them, or thin skin and avoid reviews altogether (like Stephen)

..it's interesting though that conflict between being a critic or reviewing something with honesty..and to do that, I think that language is important and you sometimes do have to be brutal but it's doing it with humour though as well..?..because that's what catches attention etc..and him then always thinking how he would feel or be upset about upsetting the person he was reviewing...I mean you have to be detached from it...I know it's not a good analogy but I guess a bit like a councillor would have to, to be effective...hmmm that is a bad analogy but I can't think of anything atm...but when Stephen mainly did reviews and felt that partly defined him maybe at the beginning could detach himself from whether that review upset that person..but then had people who might have reacted or somehow he saw it from a different perspective and then started to lose himself a bit because he couldn't be objective anymore...because if you do lose part of who and what you feel you are in life, then it does start to spiral down..and once you've been there and reached that darkness then it becomes almost a crutch/security blanket of familiarity for the bad times in your life....and you'll keep going there again with any feelings of lack of belief in yourself or questioning of yourself....
