View Full Version : More to the Andy/Hughie thing?

Yeah I am a massive Andy fan and admit he looked a ****ing idiot tonight (though it was the funniest meltdown all series so I love him MORE for it anyway :D) and I am not trying to rationalize what seemed like such an epic breakdown over nothing at all but...
Is there a chance that there was a lot more to that than was shown? I ask as everyone outside (and Jackson inside too) was on Andys side. Sam seemed offended by it. Alex piped up (shock horror :o ) and everyone who was outside, with the exception of Laura seemed to be on Andys side. Jason, who seems the most levelheaded in there was on Andys side, and even tried to chill Hughie about it all too.
It just seems so...odd, that so many would be offended (or understand the offense taken) if it was simply how it seemed to us?
Does that make sense?

I think Hughie and Ryan deliberately did it to take a pop at Andys engagement to Ed.... I think that's why many took Andys side.

Yeah I am leaning more to this myself now that I think about it properly
Still a massively bizarre reaction though.
As for the housemates reactions, on DS it was pointed out that they probably didn't actually understand what was going on so took the safe road of siding with the person ranting about gay rights...which makes sense

Jackson took his side because that's what you do when a friend comes to you furious, he had no idea what had gone on but you just say what the person wants to hear to comfort them imo
Sam only agreed because he hates the Hughie/Ryan pairing...I think the only person speaking any logic was Laura, it was just a joke...Andy literally looks down on them normally and he has been in the diary room today calling Hughie thick

As someone who has suffered from/seen homophobia at a close level Andy may have felt sensitive to any sort of insinuation that two men getting married can be mocked.
Like they fought so long to have gay marriage approved, so he didn't want Hughie & Ryan belittling something that means so much to him and others.
Don't think that was Ryan & Hughie intention at all, not one bit. But I can see how someone who has suffered and fought would find it inappropriate.
I also feel like Andy got so upset because his own engagement just happened and so it really hit close to home. We know Hughie does and says things in the moment to get reactions and get screentime and Ryan would go along with it. Do I think they meant it maliciously? No, but do I think they are in a place of a bit higher privilege and were taking the piss a bit, yes.

Yes it makes perfect sense....since when did everyone support Andy like that ? just like BB unfarely showed only a micro second of Alex visit from home, they prob only showed part of what really took place with Hughie and Ryan. This year more than ever BB are manipulating the audience with their edits.
I was surprised that Sam was also mature enough to see how flippant and disrespectful those two were being.

Me too, as it was happening I felt sure that they were doing that...to mock and disrespect his relationship like that and to do it by also making a joke of something he has such strong principles about was a double blow....they are dispicable the pair of them.

Seems to me that it doesn't matter how personally hurtful or vindictive someone behaves it's always acceptable by a lot of people if it's being done to Andy. Things that would be slammed if they were done to anyone else are seen as fair game if they're done to Andy....there's a word for that.

I second this post. Well spotted Vicky, I think you are right. There is more to Hughie and Ryan's innocent joke than meets the eye I think.
On another note, I was wondering if Andy has had discussions about his passion for gay rights with Jason, Jackson, Sam or Alex or all of them? Losing his job with the BBC over it and such? They are in there day and night and have to be talking about all kinds that we don't see. Is that why they understood where he was coming from too?

agree, hughie and ryan are desperate attention seekers..
they tried to take shine away from andy's high moment of his life.. and perhaps succeeded.. however, nobody thought the joke was funny in the house..

By using such heavy words and bringing up history, "stoned to death", "thrown off buildings", he knew what he was doing. He knows by saying this, none of the other HMs would be "against" him due to the severity of his comparisons. If they thought he was being ridiculous, they'd be scared to say in the likelihood they thought they'd come across as homophobic.
Clever from sneaky Andy. Had Andy not used those phrases, more people would have disagreed with him. He knew what he was doing.

Hughie and Ryan knew what they were doing also. It's apparent they wanted more camera time and take some shine away from Andy's best moment of his life, and they succeeded and dampened the moment. The joke wasn't funny, nobody laughed, nobody really believed. Andy is also sensitive about gay rights issue and he worked on some such projects himself. He may have taken the issue too far, but I can see clearly he was personally hurt by the joke.

He shouldn't be on TV at all if jokes as non offensive as what was tonight are getting that treatment. I didn't think the "joke" was funny, just 2 people trying to have a laugh.

History in this country.
I don't know why Andy went to compare something happening in a completely different part of the world to a joke. It doesn't happen HERE, that's what I'm saying. He could have said something along the lines as "we fight for this in this country" and leave it. There was no justification at all regarding what he said.

Oh I'm sure he has. This is when having a live feed would be great because we'd get to know a bit more about the housemates and see them as they really are, unedited and all.
I have to say Hughie has gone down in my estimations this week. Ryan not so much, since it's obvious that he lives for the cameras.

I dont think there was more to it. Sam has been looking for a reason to hate Hughie and Chelsea, Jason and Jackson just like to play the moral highground.
Tbf anytime something this controversial gets brought up in the house, it usually causes a divide. Especially when the HM's know issues that large can be used to gain points with the public/their audience. For a portion of them no doubt their support amounts to nothing but strategy and appearing to be liked in the house. I doubt even most are even that invested in the discussion at the end of the night. He has no problem expressing his feelings whatsoever and makes himself very clear so it's not like he's a victim in this situation and that he needs any protection.
Even Jason knows better than to get involved in that mess.

What? Jason tried to talk to Hughie but was thwarted by Chelsea making an appearance. Jason was very much prepared to be involved on behalf of his friend. :puzzled:

It doesn't really matter tbf but will have to look for it when I re-watch tomorrow. I missed the stream and the first half of the episode. I still think overall Jason doesn't really get involved in his matters. Nobody stopped him from speaking up for the guy and telling them how he feels about his friend. Andy isn't always wrong but he does create a lot of drama around himself. I think Jason's hands are just as full with Charlie but Andy has gone to bat for him in the past.
It was pretty awkward when Chelsea walked in, but he is Chelsea.

...I think it's only because of how manipulative he was about it all that he was making others re-assess whether they should have been taking it all as the joke that was intended...(having said that, I do think that it was a bit tacky and tactless and attention seeking of Hughie and Ryan to do it just after Andy had become engaged../'trying to steal his thunder' as it were..)...but I don't think he was genuine at all, not one little bit..I would have said that his reaction was OTT but (maybe..).. coming from an earnest place until the garden scene at the end of him smiling at and kissing his engagement ring...(the one he said on National TV that he wasn't keen on..)...and 'talking to himself but out loud so that we all could here...great performance Andy, bravo...the irony of him using gay struggles and suppression for his performance though and for his own ends, while chastising Hughie and Ryan for basically the same thing....oooopsie, is this a game-player we have in our sights and on our horizon...well hello Andy...

It makes absolute sense. A few times (with different housemates) I've puzzled over their over the top reactions to what doesn't seem very much. Then I realise it's just BB editing out what went on before the eruption/arguement or whatever.

Because no one defended Andy when Hughie isolated him and bullied him three days ago he's come back thinking he can do it again. But this time Andys took the gloves off so the others can no longer ignore it and put their heads in the sand.
Except, of course, for Laura who droned that it was just a joke. No love, the joke is your contrived long distance love affair with that walking erection who wouldn't look twice at you if it didn't involve making money.

it was only about 50 years back in britain that people could still be put in prison JUST FOR BEING GAY!
some countries have taken steps backwards recently in their treatment of gays - russia especially, but even more countries are still extremely anti-gay due to strong religious perspectives, like a whole lot of the african continent, parts of deep-south america, huge swathes of the middle-east, and brazil which is currently suffering a huge epidemic of anti-gay violence. the fight is everyday, lives are lost to the violence of others, lives are lost to suicide where a person feels death is better than living as they are forced to - in fear that being themselves means torment, attack, and frequently worse.
in this country, gay rights and acceptance has moved forward so well so fast that many of the younger gay/trans/other-identifying gender population are ABLE to live life without fear of harm or shame. it's not wrong to want that same lifestyle for people globally.
"Continent", I mean.
Olden days. Very far back in Europe. There were similar punishments.
again, not so 'very far back' at all. though legally, the sentence for sodomy/buggery was changed from death by hanging to life imprisonment back in 1861, it wasn't until 1967 that it was decriminalised between consenting adults in britain. and just because jurisdiction says it's okay, there are still murders and attacks that happen on our streets on a regular basis just because someone is, or is thought to be, gay.
these attacks are just from 2000:
2000–2009
Damilola Taylor was attacked by a local gang of youths on 27 November 2000 in Peckham, south London; he bled to death after being stabbed with a broken bottle in the thigh, which severed the femoral artery. The BBC, Telegraph, Guardian and Independent newspapers reported at the time that during the weeks between arriving in the UK from Nigeria and the attack he had been subjected to bullying and beating, which included homophobic remarks by a group of boys at his school. "The bullies told him that he was gay."[22] He "may not have understood why he was being bullied at school, or why some other children taunted him about being 'gay' – the word meant nothing to him."[23] He had to ask his mother what 'gay' meant, she said "Boys were swearing at him, saying lots of horrible words. They were calling him names."[23] His mother had spoken about this bullying, but the teachers failed to take it seriously. "She said pupils had accused her son of being gay and had beaten him last Friday."[24] Six months after the murder, his father said, "I spoke to him and he was crying that he was being bullied and being called names. He was being called 'gay'."[25] In the New Statesman two years later, when there had still been no convictions for the crime, Peter Tatchell, gay human rights campaigner, said, "In the days leading up to his murder in south London in November 2000, he was subjected to vicious homophobic abuse and assaults,"[26] and asked why the authorities had ignored this before and after his death.
In July 2005, Lauren Harries, a transwoman, was attacked along with her father and brother in their home in Cardiff by eight youths who shouted the word "******" while beating their victims. One youth pleaded guilty to inflicting grievous bodily harm and was sentenced to two years probation; his accomplices were not formally identified or charged.[27][28]
In April 2006 a man was jailed for a homophobic attack on an openly gay Anglican priest. Rev Dr Barry Rathbone was sitting in a park in Bournemouth, Dorset when Martin Powell and his girlfriend approached and spoke to him. Rathbone informed them that it was a cruising area, then Powell produced a 3-foot-long (0.91 m) metal baseball bat, called him a 'queer', and started to hit him.[29]
On 25 July 2008, 18-year-old Michael Causer was attacked by a group of men at a party in Liverpool, and died from his injuries. It is alleged that he was killed because he was gay.[30] On 23 October 2008, 23-year-old gay hairdresser Daniel Jenkinson was the victim of a homophobic attack in a Preston club. His attacker, Neil Bibby, also from Preston, was sentenced to 200 hours' unpaid work, a three-month weekend curfew, and ordered to pay £2,000 compensation after he pleaded guilty to assault. Daniel needed facial reconstruction surgery after the attack, and said he was too scared to go out in the city.[31]
On 3 March 2009 in Bromley, south London, UK, 59-year-old Gerry Edwards was stabbed to death by an assailant shouting homophobic abuse. His partner of over twenty years, 56-year-old Chris Bevan, was also stabbed and admitted to hospital in a critical condition.[32][33] The police dealing with the case said they had an open mind, but were treating it as a homophobic murder. Two men were subsequently arrested.[34]
On 15 May 2009, An English court found two football fans guilty of shouting homophobic chants at footballer Sol Campbell during a match [35] This was the first prosecution for indecent chanting in the UK.[36] The police reported that up to 2,500 fans shouted chants at the match that included "Sol, Sol, wherever you may be, Not long now until lunacy, We won't give a **** if you are hanging from a tree," the footballer commented "I felt totally victimised and helpless by the abuse I received on this day. It has had an effect on me personally".[36] Three men and two boys were given cautions after the match.[36]
In September 2009, 62-year-old Ian Baynham was attacked outside South Africa House in Trafalgar Square in London by three youths shouting homophobic abuse.[37] Joel Alexander and Ruby Thomas were found guilty of manslaughter at the Old Bailey and sentenced to six and seven years imprisonment respectively. A third accomplice, Rachael Burke was found guilty of a lesser charge of affray and sentenced to two years of imprisonment.[38]

Some nations going that way is EVERYONE'S business.
How dare you?of course it is
Because no one defended Andy when Hughie isolated him and bullied him three days ago he's come back thinking he can do it again. But this time Andys took the gloves off so the others can no longer ignore it and put their heads in the sand.
Except, of course, for Laura who droned that it was just a joke. No love, the joke is your contrived long distance love affair with that walking erection who wouldn't look twice at you if it didn't involve making money.
:hehe:
Why :conf: I like Andy and still do,he was a bit over the top,but nothing so bad as to dislike him for imo.
I agree Kazanne. Still like him as much as ever. I'm not so fickle as to go off him because he actually reacts at last to getting harassed in there by the ignorant Hughie.

I think Hughie and Ryan deliberately did it to take a pop at Andys engagement to Ed.... I think that's why many took Andys side.
I agree

Hughie and Ryan are camp by its very definition, they trivialise important issues and they make a drama out of trivial ones. Andy turned that on its head last night and high lighted how it's not always acceptable to just breeze through life with no respect and no empathy for others. He's spent four weeks trying to reason with them and failed so now he's cranked it up a gear. I would love it if he plays really dirty for the second half of the show.
Not one housemate spoke up to defend Andy from Hughies disgusting bahaviour last time so this time Andy made damn sure they couldn't ignore it....good for him.

As for the housemates reactions, on DS it was pointed out that they probably didn't actually understand what was going on so took the safe road of siding with the person ranting about gay rights...which makes sense
This is the only logical explanation for the other housemates reactions tbh, otherwise... yikes...

I dont agree - I think Andy lost his cool and composure - I think he regrets saying what he did, he knows he took it too far - whereas the other housemates raise their voices and shout when they are angry - Andy uses words and as a news presenter he has probably had to report on these stonings and other awful things -
I know it was serious - far too serious for big brother - I agree we havent seen all the footage - I like Hugie and Ryan and Andy the most!
I do feel sorry for Andy - its very difficult for him, he is in a house full of Numpties and he is quite an intelligent man - he has just got engaged - I bet he feels like Gulliver amoungst the yahoo's and he lost it.
I forgive him. I hope he lightens up a bit - there is no way he deserves to be the least favourite HM especially over Chelsea!!
this is happening throughout the world as we speak
it was only about 50 years back in britain that people could still be put in prison JUST FOR BEING GAY!
some countries have taken steps backwards recently in their treatment of gays - russia especially, but even more countries are still extremely anti-gay due to strong religious perspectives, like a whole lot of the african continent, parts of deep-south america, huge swathes of the middle-east, and brazil which is currently suffering a huge epidemic of anti-gay violence. the fight is everyday, lives are lost to the violence of others, lives are lost to suicide where a person feels death is better than living as they are forced to - in fear that being themselves means torment, attack, and frequently worse.
in this country, gay rights and acceptance has moved forward so well so fast that many of the younger gay/trans/other-identifying gender population are ABLE to live life without fear of harm or shame. it's not wrong to want that same lifestyle for people globally.
again, not so 'very far back' at all. though legally, the sentence for sodomy/buggery was changed from death by hanging to life imprisonment back in 1861, it wasn't until 1967 that it was decriminalised between consenting adults in britain. and just because jurisdiction says it's okay, there are still murders and attacks that happen on our streets on a regular basis just because someone is, or is thought to be, gay.
these attacks are just from 2000:
Thanks for posting that Jan. These are the sort of atrocities that Andy writes about and fights against in real life, while many of us just read it and shake our heads at the horror of it all. Fair play to him for trying to do something about it. He can't leave a passion like that at the door of BB when he enters the house, it must be always with him.

No, by what he does in his real life, writing and campaigning and losing his job over his beliefs. Most of us leave it to others, he doesn't. Surely you can give him credit for that.

35 years ago it was illegal for gay men to have sex before the age of 21 but straight guys could have sex at 16. You could go to war and kill a man but you could not go to bed and love one. At the height of the AIDS epidemic Mrs Thatcher introduced Clause 28 forbidding the mention of gay lifestyles across every school and public place of teaching in the country, she made being gay a dirty word. One of her Tory back benchers proposed gay people shud be gassed to rid the world of their self made disease. Tory newspapers ran jokes about it...." I've got bad news and good news, the bad news is I am gay, the good news is I have AIDS " Ronald Reagan pulled the plug on any public support of the gay community and Thatcher backed him. Meanwhile medical companies were making billions for the USA and themselves by abusing victims with lies and fake miracle cures and using them as Guinea pigs until most of them died, not from the disease but from the side affects of experimental drugs....the only gay guys affected by the disease back then and still living today are the ones who refused to take the drugs in the 1980s because they didn't trust the government and the drug companies.
Wasn't until 1999 that a diversity law was put in place to protect gay people from discrimination in the work place, before that it was professional suicide to tell people at work that you were gay.
1981 and 1999 may seem like Jurassic times to younger people but for people who are old enough to remember it seems like yesterday. So of course some of people find Ryan and Hughies trivial care free life style and their lack of knowledge about why they have it, irritating sometimes, especially when it's being used to confront and poke fun at someone who respects what the cost of that freedom was for so many people.

No one was contributing to the stoning of people in other countries...it was a very simple case of Ryan and Hughie thumbing their nose at Andys engagement and sending it up so they could diminish it in front of the viewers and the other housemates. It was disrespectful and confrontational but unlike the last time Hughie did that and no one supported Andy, this time Andy made sure they couldn't ignore it. He backed them into a corner where no one was gonna support them, he flipped it on its head. Clever.

not at all, but i cant see how 2 people joking around can cause issues for people compared to two people actually getting engaged on tv...
I actually take the persecution of any person very seriously indeed.

Hughie and Ryan were talking in the stone room about their relationship....and about taking it to the next level of being b/f and b/f ....this no doubt lead them to come up with the joke as regards getting engaged. There was no evidence of any malice or raining on Andys parade shown so its really all speculation as to whether they did it maliciously.
To me Andy was being over sensitive and his dislike of the two guys just enhanced this.
And in other parts of the world people are still being stoned and thrown from buildings for being gay...

I don't understand how this year in the house whenever a housemate upsets someone else it's the person who's been upset that gets the blame...how does their snidy little piss take make them not in any way to blame....how is it Andys fault because he didn't like it ? If they didn't like Andys reaction then they should have thought about that before they tried to patronise and mock him.. If you wanna go around offending people then you don't get to choose the other persons reaction....the mere fact that Ryan and Hughie wanted to upset someone on purpose means that they are always gonna be more in the wrong no matter how big the explosion they cause.
