congrats america a win for racism, homophobe, sexism etc. I can't wait for the country to split apart in the coming months.

Anybody that supports this man and his values is equally as disgusting and vile as he is, (most) of the older generation (same with brexit) have decided on a future path which is horrible and now for the younger generation we will have to suffer.

The first female president will happen, but only when:

A) the left (and centrists in general, to be honest) have picked themselves up and put together a coherent message that resonates with the same disenfranchised who are being enthused by far right populism

B) when a better female candidate runs

C) western politics becomes more progressive, which will happen generationally (as it has throughout recent history)

...I found it really cringy last night watching some females being interviewed about their voting and how excited and emotional they were with the thought of the first female president...it should never be about gender, it should only be about the right person who they believed was most deserving of their vote...a vote for a female president for that reason alone is the same as an anti-establishment vote for no other reason than it's anti.../regardless of the low merits of that person...

I don't think it's even just Hillary (though she is a terrible candidate!). I think the liberalism is highly visible in our culture (particularly media) and it's been accepted as the eventual fate (read: shoved down our throats) for so many years... people took it for granted that it was going to just keep going that way, either for or against their wishes... that heavily influenced polling and that clearly affected turn out.

I really don't even think most people realize what they're even voting for... their reasons for supporting either of these idiots are very simplistic. If you ask them what is going on down-ballot, they don't know... I always ask. Very few know their names. This result will is a symptom of that problem.

Don't fool yourselves into thinking that Hillary voters are more intelligent than Trump voters... they're not. They all helped to make this election so negative instead of finding a core message we could all agree on, which AIDED to shift the pendulum to him... anyway, the blame should be shared across the board in my opinion... media, pundits, voters, platforms, political interest, medical, police, everyone has had their hand in influencing change... and they sat by and let both of these get to the top of the ticket.

Jack_
09-11-2016, 05:08 AM

Correct.

The terms 'racist' and 'sexist' will be thrown around in the days, weeks and months following this result (much like they were post-Brexit) but it's reductionist nonsense that solves nothing. You cannot begin to prevent things like this from happening without first understanding why they do.

Right wing anti-establishment populism is on the rise across the west precisely because of the failings capitalism and globalisation have had on the lives of working class communities that have been left behind and not listened to. It is essential that the left puts together a coherent alternative that addresses people's very real concerns with the actual answers.

It will not be easy, it will not happen overnight, but it won't happen while we stick our fingers in our ears and chastise swathes of disenfranchised people.

...hmmm, when you have a terrible female candidate though, you can't really factor the female bit, I think it's the terrible bit that's mostly been factored.../that for me was one of the biggest things I didn't like through her campaign, was that she 'called female' and sexism so much, rather than owning why she wasn't liked and listening to that...

For the last part, that's not the consensus among her detractors. Bengazi was a huge red flag for her running our country, from a foreign affairs perspective...(I know, Trump isn't any better)

I don't fully discount her gender being a factor. I think that people are going to be more harsh of a female candidate, whether ingrained or not... I personally haven't heard anything about her gender here... just that she's not palatable. That's arguably gender-based.

I think that so many negative labels got attached to her... it's been happening for years. We knew she would run for president when she took the senate. People didn't like her then either, but we were prepared for her run.... she's had every negative label thrown at her, for a longer period much longer than Trump... she's never been the people's princess or anything.

I guess because people assumed Trump had all these negative headlines, that it would somehow be worse for Trump... not necessarily. Hillary has been in our consciousness longer and her wounds are deepened by the fact she is very much a part of the establishment.

That has a lot to do with the Republican's control of Congress really. But even then, as much as Obama has his faults, he's still achieved a fair amount:

If Markets continue to plummet worldwide like they are right now, Trump will have a hard time getting anything done, even with a republican controlled DC.

Trump is terrifying because he's normalized mysogeny, racism, etc. but he's about to find out that running the country (even if hands half the duties over to VP Pence) is harder than you think

I see this as an American vote of support for Brexit. No doubt the interference in the result of a pubic vote from Ms Miller only added fuel to the fire and to the general feelings of discontent. Two fingers up to the establishment - the people have a voice.

Like it or not this is about peoples' concerns over immigration - and will not go away.

...yeah but similar to our elections I would reckon.../you kind of know when it's over and hopeless if you're a candidate and if she's already calling 'rigged' the lady knows that she's already left the stage...

Yeah the stations are not making it official yet, but they're pretty much saying it's over... it's on to her to concede though

..I agree to an extent Leon but the whole thing has been poor stuff so I don't think we can apply any usual courtesies here...

She won't be the first to not conceed on the night... and neither should she yet. He doesn't have the numbers yet... and there are plenty of recounts to take place. I don't think any of that will end in her win...but give everyone a chance to breathe and let the reality sink in imo

..yeah, her personal reasons being that she pulled in all of the establishment and political experience she could find and had which was substantial... and she still lost to an intolerant 'trash TV' person.../a personal embarrassment I would say...

Well yeah, but considering she mocked him so much for his refusal to accept defeat, she is essentially doing the same thing. At least give that quick speech yourself to your supporters and tell them there will be more tomorrow. I'm just glad this is over anyway.

I tend to think it as much a personal decision to concede as much as a patriotic design... some people just want to put it behind them. Other wants to take a step back and wait til morning for the full results. I imagine she doesn't want to rush it at 2AM (I just realized the time because my time settings were messed up  Thanks Windows). Maybe she wants to rewrite her speech. Maybe she wants to contest. All these possibilities are entirely plausible. But it'll give her time to decide what she wants to do while her people go through the results county by county...

..I honestly think with either of them, their supporters are less important to them in this than their own personal egos, just both really shabby people.../but yeah, phew it's over is all and hopefully we won't see so much of either in our media now...
