Ooooh like the new theme! I still think I want Love and You're not Here are the best though.

Is it still Mary McGlynn who sings it do you know? It sounds like her but it seems different too.

Kotaku says its still Survival horror, unlike Resi 5 and Dead Space

Also a US fan has informed me that Homecoming is on par with 1,3, and 4, but not 2 (for obvious reasons)

One more soul to call lyrics

Enough...
With Lies...
Tell me Why...
No Time...

My Blood...
Your Lie...
Is this you?
inside...
Death, to the living, the flame has no need in heart(?) in the order of life, they know your there, as you challenge(?), your plan, a real shot in the dark. Came a little too late, Its over(?)

Come then...
My Children...
Conception (or) consumption...
I'm Dying

Come(?) silence...
I'm Screaming...

Damage come to flesh, what they say, in the name of the...Damage come to to high, It's the sky(?), of the end(?). Damage come to slow, I know, It Loathes me,my(?) Damage come to light, Let's Sing loud(?) advocate us(?),

your here,
your gone,
its not fair,
i'm lost.
your gut
your fear

was it worth the prize(?), for the children you lost along the way, still remember them days and face as cold and remember they cry, their fate fall in your hands, when its over, they come to haunt you.

embrace the confusion, plan the illusion, nightmare(?), intrusion(?), one more soul to call for all in silence, comes two more souls to call for all in and in time, three more souls to call they all unknowing, four more souls to call what they are and to know it.

Back by night, wasting light, defend me, relive life, unroll(?) what you used to do, lucky one, does your eyes , your family learned your here,

Come then...
My Children...
Conception (or) consumption...
I'm dying
silence,
I'm screaming

Damage come to flesh, what they say, in the name of the...Damage come to high, It's the sky(?), of the end(?). Damage come to slow, I know, It Loathes me,my(?) Damage come to light, Let's Sing loud(?) advocate us(?),

one more soul to call for all in silence, comes two more souls to call for all in and in time, three more souls to call they all unknowing, four more souls to call what they are and to know it.

Scarier than any of the Silent Hill games

In Silent Hill: Homecoming, you will be scared of all of the sounds in this game. Nurses are running around crazy, babies are crying, the atmosphere is awesome with a nice music background, and things pop out of nowhere. I just suggest you play the game at night with your 5.1 Surround sound all the way up and see if it won’t scare you.

IGN might have played the game in the office and not in a house at night; how can you be scared when you play it on a bright day!?

Characters are deeper

Alex Shepard and the rest of the cast of Silent Hill: Homecoming are more deep than any of the characters in Silent Hill games. More of the past of Alex Shepard will be revealed in the game, and that is very interesting.

Story is better than Origins but not as great as Silent Hill 2

I found the story of Silent Hill: Homecoming better than the rest of the games in the series, but, of course, I think Silent Hill 2 is far better. From start to finish, you’ll be scratching your head from time to time saying to yourself, “WHAAAT?”

The IGN review seemed really nitpicky to me, they were determined to dislike it I think because it wasn't made by Team Silent. Reasons like 'the story's ok but it doesn't relate to other games' are nitpicky since when did any of the other games feature appearances by Dahlia or Alessa? I can't remember them in SH2 yet that got a great score.... the comments about Alex being too able are just stupid....He's an ex army solider I think he might just now how to fight.

About it not being scary....RE4 wasn't yet look at the scores that got.

The comments about the music being too 'grand' was just nitpicky I thought. Overall it was a bad review, the reasons to dislike it was minor i thought the only real point that was valid was the point about it being a bit too dark at times.

As the old saying goes 'you can't spell ignorant without IGN'.

Just like I said I would do...Admit I was wrong. This game was a blast. I enjoyed the darker story and the plot revelations. Silent Hill has been around for 10 years...it has to reveal something sooner or later. It can't be silent forever.

So yes. I loved this game. It had flaws, mainly dealing with combat mechanics...but I love it. I won't say it's the best or anything, but it's worth having. It's tough though.

My impression of this game is that it lends to SH1's original vision. Disjointed, dark, gritty, and not always complete in it's vision. I remember when I first played my beloved Sh2 and was surprised by how different it was. In retrospect, Homecoming is what I expected Silent Hill 2 to be.

Silent Hill Homecoming (http://uk.games.konami-europe.com/game.do;jsessionid=1D3C7D6A8525773B7960373D5F43097 B?idGame=185)

Silent Hill Homecoming, the sixth installment of this classic console series is not only the first to be programmed for the next generation PS3 and Xbox 360 machines, but also adds a new central character into the mix.

Alex Shepherd is a war veteran returning home from an overseas tour of duty, following acceptance of compassionate leave after receiving the news that his younger brother, Joshua, has gone missing. Alex begins his investigations in his small home-town of Shepherd's Glen, but soon finds himself in the mist-shrouded and seemingly empty streets of Silent Hill?

With understandable strides forward in the look of the game thanks to the increased power of the PS3 and 360, the gameplay and control mechanics have also benefited from the upgrade to better consoles. More items from the scenery can be used as weapons and collecting them is now done on the fly rather than equipping them through an inventory, meaning the tension in hectic battle sequences goes through the roof as players have less time to react.

Alex can also vary the strength of his force during combat, using combinations of light and hard attacks that can be strung together in combinations to fell enemies, or powered up for slower but more intense results. Weaker or harder counter attacks are also included as is a dodge system that lets the player skip an enemy strike and instantly attack the assailant if executed correctly, or one that reduces damages but doesn't avoid it completely if timing is slightly off. Some weapons encountered upon during play also have 'finishing' style moves for more variety when defeating enemies.

An all-new soundtrack by acclaimed series composer Akira Yamaoka accompanies the new look and gameplay features, promising to make this one of the most chilling and atmospheric Silent Hill adventures to date.

Australia’s strict video game rating system has been banned a few titles this past year. Shellshock 2: Blood Trails, Silent Hill: Homecoming, Dark Sector, F.E.A.R 2: Project Origin, and Fallout 3 were all refused the maximum MA15+ rating. Silent Hill Homecoming has found its way out of ratings limbo and has been given the countries max rating.

Akira Yamaoka is one of the video game industry’s few bona fide rockstar composers, renowned for his edgy and intensely atmospheric soundtracks for the hugely popular Silent Hill video game series. His potent mix of dark ambient, industrial and trip hop music featured in Silent Hill provides an immersive and unique melancholic experience.

Yamaoka-san is one of the few game composers to successfully craft original songs for a game soundtrack (“Theme of Laura”) that truly enhance and represent the melancholic aesthetics of Silent Hill’s story and gaming experience. He was the first composer to have his original music from a game featured in the Hollywood movie adaptation, arguably making “Silent Hill” the most authentic game-to-movie production to date. Additionally, his music from Silent Hill has been performed live at the “GC” Symphonic Game Music concert in Leipzig, Germany and PLAY! A Video Game Symphony and this year Video Games Live will also add Silent Hill to their set list.

In addition to his role as the Silent Hill series music composer and sound designer, Yamaoka-san has overseen the development of the franchise as Producer since Silent Hill 3 and recently contributed an all-new original soundtrack for Silent Hill: Homecoming. Following the release of the game M4G caught up with the veteran composer for an in-depth interview about the reception to the latest installment in the series, his ambitions for the future and the challenges ahead for the Silent Hill franchise.

M4G: What was the soundtrack brief for Silent Hill Homecoming? Was there motivation to deliver something new and fresh for 'Next Gen' Silent Hill?
Akira Yamaoka: I didn’t apply new approaches this time. I was asked to create music that’s along the style of the series. So I did not try to do something different.

M4G: For the benefit of those who did not experience Homecoming how would you describe the musical styles featured in your latest score? Did you take a thematic approach at all?
Akira Yamaoka: I say the musical style is “Silent Hill style.” People who have played the past Silent Hill games will feel the music is very Silent Hill like. When I create music for a game, I always try to create music that will help tell the story. Based on the scenario, I create music that will help depict the situation/story and make the story even better.

M4G: What were some of the challenges writing the music for Silent Hill Homecoming? Do you feel you’ve pushed the game’s musical spectrum to its limits within the Silent Hill universe?
Akira Yamaoka: As a creator, I usually look for changes. I am not satisfied using the same approaches and style all the time. But this time, I had to create the sound without making too many changes. I think this was the real challenge for me.

I was tempted to make changes and create new sound, but I resisted that and stuck with the original taste of the series. This was a big challenge.

I didn’t expect this series to last for over a decade. I have always been giving my all to each title and pushing myself to the limit, but I think I have to go beyond my limit for the next title.

M4G: How did the collaboration with the US development team affect your approach to scoring and designing the audio for Silent Hill Homecoming?
Akira Yamaoka: There were many talented people in the development team. They were using different technologies including new technologies and dramatically improved existing technologies. In particular, they perfectly implemented the sound that I created for 5.1 channel in the game. I was able to support 5.1 surround thanks to their abilities.

We were able to make this title because the members not only used the technologies but they mastered them. The talented members and their abilities greatly motivated and inspired me.

M4G: Did they request any music changes or did you have complete freedom and autonomy over all the music decisions?
Akira Yamaoka: I was requested to recreate the feel of Silent Hill, which is the style that I have been creating since the beginning of the franchise. They wanted the music to be lyrical, sentimental and have sadness in the sound for this title. This approach is something that comes to my mind very easily because it’s what I have been doing already for a very long time. I also had much freedom in creating this sound, but of course I did have some restrictions like making Heavy Metal or Techno music. Not that I wanted to create such a sound for Silent Hill. (Laughs)

M4G: Has new technology improved the implementation process in any discerning ways?
Akira Yamaoka: Not really. I just had to compile the music data for 5.1 surround and then separate the data by sound.

M4G: How did the overall process differ from working with the Silent Hill development teams in Japan?
Akira Yamaoka: The process was pretty much the same. For Silent Hill, I usually have much freedom to create music. But because of that freedom, I have to consider many different ideas, and a lot of it of trial and error. I took the process with the Silent Hill team in Japan before and the process for this title was not different.

M4G: How many times did you visit the US development team during the game’s design and creation?
Akira Yamaoka: I’m not quite sure… (Laughs) I didn’t count the number of visits. But one day I noticed that my friends in Japan hadn’t been inviting me to go drinking in a while. When I asked them why they didn’t even call me, they said, “You’re not in Japan most of the time!” Then I thought, “Wow, I must have traveled a lot.” (Laughs)

M4G: How did you divide your time between producing the game and writing the score?
Akira Yamaoka: About fifty-fifty.

M4G: How much music did you write for Silent Hill Homecoming and how long did the writing process take?
Akira Yamaoka: I think I wrote between 70-80 songs and about half of them were used in the game. It took about 2-3 months to write them.

M4G: Did you record live? (if so, what, when, where and with whom?)
Akira Yamaoka: No, I did not do live recording. I have done live DJ outside of work, though. (laughs)

M4G: What do you think is the most unique aspect of the score for Silent Hill Homecoming?
Akira Yamaoka: I think I was able to create a pretty interesting sound using 5.1 channel surround. I’d like everyone to listen to and enjoy the sound while playing the game.

M4G: What are your favorite tracks from the score and why? What are your favorite moments from the game and why?
Akira Yamaoka: I have a special feeling for the theme song, “One More Soul To The Call.” I always have a special place in my heart for the scores I wrote as theme songs. Because I usually write a theme song first, that is where a lot of trial and error takes place. That’s why I like the theme song the most and feel so much for it.

My favorite moment is the scene where the main character is surrounded by Pyramid Head (pictured below). I’m not saying that I like the part of the scenario, but I just love the graphic image of the scene where he is surrounded by the big menace.

M4G: The Soundtrack is available in the US as a limited edition CD release via GameStop and 3 Bonus Tracks from Amazon. Will there be a commercial CD or iTunes release?
Akira Yamaoka: This is still under consideration.

M4G: Compared to previous Silent Hill games, Homecoming was not as well received. Why do you think this is?
Akira Yamaoka: I think it lacked the feel of the Silent Hill series or the elements that were required for Silent Hill. The theme of the series is a sort of a silent / unspoken fear (it’s hard to describe…). Homecoming might have lacked the identity of Silent Hill such as psychological fear. Silent Hill in the past depicted things that Japanese people fear using the foreign town environment and it had been well received. It might sound kind of ironic, though.

In the Silent Hill series, the feeling and sense of Japanese people are combined with the foreign cultures and environment, so people sometimes feel uncomfortable or strange. But it actually created the unique horror and universe. I think Homecoming lacked such feel. We need to provide the unique feel and horror of the series. If we provide normal horror and gameplay that users can experience with any games, we can’t expect user support. I think this will be a challenge for us.

M4G: How do you feel about the game and soundtrack now? What would you change/improve, if anything?
Akira Yamaoka: I like to try a completely different approach. But it does not mean that I can create music that strays from the style of the series. I would like to take a different approach while keeping the style. When Silent Hill was started, I wanted to destruct “game music.” In other words, I wanted to challenge myself to create music with a new approach that’s different from the existing approaches for game music. But over time, I think the Silent Hill music has become “traditional game music.” I was able to establish the Silent Hill style as one of game music's most recognisable styles. Next time, I would like to create game music that’s not categorized as any of the existing styles.

M4G: Do you think there will be another Silent Hill game developed in Japan or is the future of the franchise now firmly in the creative hands of the US developer?
Akira Yamaoka: This is a difficult question. I think that Silent Hill has to have Japanese blood or a sense which only Japanese people have and can depict. Even if it is hard for people from different cultures to understand, it has been well accepted and has become the originality of Silent Hill. So I think there may be another Silent Hill game developed in Japan someday. But I also think we will still have more Silent Hill games by the developers outside Japan.

M4G: What do you think of the current state of audio in horror video games? Have you played Dead Space or BioShock? What do you think of their soundtracks?
Akira Yamaoka: I played them. I did not feel like the music style was especially new, but I thought it was good that the music supported the feel of the game. Games have to come first. The role of the sound is to help create the universe and make it even better.

M4G: What other music styles are you interested in writing that you’ve not had the opportunity to compose for Silent Hill or other games?
Akira Yamaoka: I would like to try experimental composition. If I’m free to make anything, I think I will make a lot of nonsensical music like sampling buzzing of cicadas and looping it endlessly. I will probably make music that does not make sense to anybody but me. I am very lucky that I can create music that helps create the feel and universe of movies and games. But if I wasn’t making music for movies and games, I would have probably been making music that nobody would ever listen to!

M4G: Which game soundtracks have impressed you the most in 2008?
Akira Yamaoka: Braid definitely. It is an Xbox Live Arcade title. It used unique sound and technical approaches and I thought it was a very fun piece.

M4G: Are there any artists/vocalists you would like to collaborate with in the future? Would you ever consider recording a live orchestra in your scores?
Akira Yamaoka: I’d love to work with Mr. Tommy Tallarico. He is actually one of my best friends. It would mean so much to me if I could collaborate and create music with him. I hope this will come true one day.

I’d love to record with a live orchestra. I have played with an orchestra and learned how fun and interesting orchestras and the composition of the musical instruments are. I want to play my original songs with an orchestra one day. When I do that, I want to change the traditional way of using an orchestra. I remember how Steve Vai played with an orchestra. It was very innovative.

M4G: What game(s) and/or album projects are you working on that you can mention?
Akira Yamaoka: I’d love to talk about it, but at this point I can only say that I’m currently working on a new game. I am the producer of the game. I’m hoping that I can announce it this year. It will be a completely different, all-new concept. I am confident that everyone will be pleasantly surprised when it comes out.

M4G: What artists/albums are you currently listening to?
Akira Yamaoka: I like “Black Roses” by Rasmus now. I love North European artists, so I listen to them a lot. I also like the latest Guns’N Roses album, “Chinese Democracy.” I realized again how wonderful Axl Rose’s voice is. I often listen to the old and new albums by Mogwai, too.

- Data from British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has confirmed that Konami is working on a remake of the original Silent Hill for PS2. However, BBFC said as long as the game remains identical, Konami can release it on whichever platform they want to without resubmitting it. So it is likely the game will also show up on other platforms like Wii and PSP.

“This is a reimagining of the first Silent Hill,” explains producer Tomm Hulett. “It’s not a remake or a port. That’s an important distinction. It really feels like a new game.”

We will have more details on this game as they come in, and I will add that information to this post. Thanks to Marl0 for the heads up!

UPDATE - quotes from the article…

“The characters play different roles, things don’t necessarily happen in the same order, and the story is taken in lots of new directions. You still play as Harry Mason, you’re still looking for your daughter, and you’ll see familiar elements, but they’re all twisted to betray your expectations.”

“One of Shattered Memories’ most significant and intriguing additions—your answers actually affect how the game unfolds. And it doesn’t end there. the game “watches” you constantly, and your behavior throughout can determine when you’ll meet certain characters, which scenes you’ll witness, and a variety of other factors.” “In Silent Hill games, the town always gets inside the protagonist’s head,” say Hulett. “But now, it’s getting inside YOUR head.”

“We’re using the Wii Remote to interact directly with the environment, so the puzzles are all based around that idea,” says Hulett. “You’re not just hitting buttons to choose things.” He also notes that the solution to a puzzle is always in the immediate vicinity, and assures us there’s a lot less backtracking then in previous games.”

“Longtime fans of the series will also be delighted to learn that there’s a way through every locked door; no more checking dozens of entrances only to find that 90% of them are permanently barred shut.”

Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH is to bring its terrifying Silent Hill series to Wii™ as Silent Hill: Shattered Memories heads to the Nintendo system for the first time in Autumn. The game, a clever reimagining of the now out of print first Silent Hill title, will also be released for PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) and PlayStation®2 at the same time.

While the game shares its twisting plot with the original PlayStation game, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories takes a different path in many, many ways. Characters can be approached but will offer different responses and be found in different places, while new clues and gameplay paths can be followed. The title follows Harry Mason, as he attempts to unravel the mystery of his missing daughter, Cheryl. A broken man, Mason’s investigations lead him to the mist-shrouded, snowy streets of Silent Hill: a malevolent town where the shadows play host to a wealth of evil, misshapen creatures.

Designed to make full use of the Wii’s unique controllers, Silent Hill: Shattered Memories uses the Wii Remote™ as a torch and cell phone as Mason looks for clues. The torch is vital for scouring the darkened, abandoned buildings of Silent Hill, while the phone acts as a secondary user interface, allowing the player to access maps via its GPS capabilities and take pictures of interesting elements. Likewise, the Wii Remote also can be used to pick up, examine and manipulate items to solve puzzles along the journey. Such technology was not available when the original Silent Hill was released in 1999, and its inclusion showcases Konami’s determination to enhance the playing experience with new, available technology.

Also new to Shattered Memories is a psyche profile element, which monitors every aspect of player’s reactions – from where they explore first, items that have been examined, and their reaction to those they meet. Small visual elements will also be altered slightly, adding to the oppressing atmosphere where nothing is what it seems. The psyche profile will adapt Harry’s actions as and when he meets normal-looking people or the game’s many inhuman denizens.

While the PSP® and PlayStation®2 will feature a more familiar control system, both games will boast the new additions, and are certain to entrance hardened fans of Silent Hill and newcomers alike. All three games are being developed by Climax, the team behind the acclaimed Silent Hill: Origins for PSP® and PlayStation®2, and will also feature an all-new soundtrack by series creator Akira Yamaoka.

Silent Hill: Shattered Memories will be released for Wii™, PSP® (PLAYSTATION®Portable) and PlayStation®2 in Autumn 2009. For more information, please contact Steve Merrett at Voltage PR on 020 7903 5122 or email steve@voltagepr.com.

First of all, how big is the team working on Silent Hill: Shattered Dreams and how long has the game been in development?

Mark Simmons: The development team has 55+ key team members working at Climax Solent studio, the majority of which created 'Silent Hill Origins.' This team is supported by an extended network of 90+ artists helping to produce the vast amount of character, environment, and story content for this game. The introduction of a game mechanic where the game changes constantly based on the users personality profile has brought on some significant content challenges which explains the necessity for the relatively large numbers of people for a Wii game. Akira's also a key part of the team as well and we're working closely with him on the development of the atmosphere and music for this game.

IGN: Why did you want to bring Silent Hill to Wii?

Tomm Hulett: In moving to Wii, we had a chance to revitalize Silent Hill as a series, and do new things that weren't possible before, both for the series and the genre. This move made sense for two reasons. The first, well it's a no brainer if you look at the Wii remote. The flashlight and the radio static -- two trademark features of the series -- are right there on the controller. It's too perfect.

Sam Barlow: The second reason, the Wii as a platform gives developers the leeway to think outside the box and to be creative -- we can take risks that we couldn't on the more traditional "hardcore" platforms. That's due to the costs of 360/PS3 development and also the mindset of the user base. Some people on Wii have never played a horror game -- so they don't know what to expect, they don't know to expect the tired genre staples. Some people on Wii are lapsed gamers, returning to the medium -- so they want something fresh, they want to see things moved on. And then there's the gamers (still the majority of Wii owners) -- they know that the Wii has the ability to shake up established genres and franchises in the same way that the DS has done, so they're excited to try new things on Wii.

Mason explores SIlent Hill with his flashlight.
Mark Simmons: With 'Origins' we aimed to bring an experience to a handheld that people weren't getting with other titles. We dared people to play Origins on their own in a graveyard. We aimed to create a classic Silent Hill game with all the bells and whistles but on a handheld. With that game I feel we earned our wings. Now, we're pushing the series where it has never gone before. Our aim is to bring back the true psychological survival horror experience, but in a way that resonates with the modern audience. To the fans I say as a truly dedicated Silent Hill developer, and as loyal fans ourselves, "we care." We want more than anything to put SH back on the map as the only game that delivers the kind of story-telling that a Silent Hill game can. We want to show to a new audience who knows of Silent Hill but has never felt 'that SH2 feeling' how much a computer game can mess with your mind.

IGN: Some people will call the game a remake of the first. Is that accurate? Tell us why not.

Tomm Hulett: It's definitely not a remake.

Sam Barlow: A remake would mean literally re-crafting the same content, the same gameplay, with some tweaks. That isn't this game. This shares the same starting point as SH1, but then uses it as a springboard to go to new interesting places. It's a bit like how Zelda titles start from the same premise--hero finds sword, saves world--but always reinvent themselves. Well, maybe it's more extreme than Zelda.

Tomm Hulett: We keep beating this example to death, but it's like Battlestar Galactica, the movie vs. the series. They start with the same premise, but none of the details are sacred, and you don't know where things are going to go because it really is a brand new story. If you want a different example, look at Nolan's Dark Knight and Burton's Batman. Both feature the caped crusader we all know fighting his greatest nemesis, the Joker. Both have a love interest. Both have Harvey Dent and Commissioner Gordon. But how similar are the two movies?

Sam Barlow: My personal examples are Cronenberg's The Fly or Schrader's Cat People. Those horror movies took source material that worked already but created bold new movies that are their own entities. No one would reject Cronenberg's The Fly as just a "remake." We take the idea and reinvent it, come at it from an entirely new angle. If this was a Wiimake, we wouldn't be as excited by it.

IGN: Sounds fair. So who do you play as and how do you start the game?

Sam Barlow: You play as Harry Mason. The game starts with a therapy session and a car crash.

Mark Simmons: That's pretty much it for the start. It wouldn't be right to give anything else away would it?

My guess is that it'll just be worse graphics, more traditional controls, and normal sound I guess. I can see everything else being kept in. It'd be intriguing to see what the PSP version would be like though, my guess is that it's gonna be more traditional and might not have any or many branching paths.

It's like RE with Chainsaws. They did it once and now they've randomly put it in RE5 just because Salvador was popular in RE4. Sirely there's OTHER weapons apart from chainsaws in the world.

I think creating an enemy similar to PH would be good. A bigger demon that's more persistant in hounding you then other demons. Like an Alyssa demon or somethng.

Link: http://www.destructoid.net/

Originally from Destructoid:

"All Shattered Memories jokes aside, once we started to take a closer look at Climax's upcoming contribution to the world of Silent Hill, we realized we had quite a few questions we wanted to ask then. Being the Silent Hill purist that I am, I've spent an obsessive and borderline unhealthy amount of time on all the previous games in the series. I had to know more!

Lucky for me, Climax's Tomm Hulett, lead producer on Silent Hill: Shattered Memories, was willing to let me pelt him with questions, not to mention ask a lot of the annoying fan stuff. Will Pyramid Head be back? Will I hate the lack of focus on combat? Will this make devotees of the original Silent Hill rage and hurl the Wiimote at their TVs? Follow me past the jump to get the skinny on all this and more.

Destructoid: Whether it's called a remake or not, Shattered Memories does reuse the familiar protagonist of the first Silent Hill, Harry Mason. Since the original game is a beloved classic, what made you decide to try recreating the story differently? Was the team concerned that this choice might upset hardcore fans of the original title?

Tomm: Well it's important to remember it's a re-imagining. Not a port, not a remake. So yes, you are still stepping into Harry Mason's shoes, and you're still searching for his daughter Cheryl. But everything after that is new or changed. Re-imagining the first game was a conscious decision, because the Wii has a huge audience of gamers who maybe haven't played Silent Hill before. So it wouldn't be fair to jump right into Silent Hill: The Game After Homecoming, would it? At the same time, Harry Mason's quest is a very emotional, impactful one, so there was a lot of value in allowing players to start there.

But what about the people who HAVE played the first game or seen the movie? They've been there and done that already. However, we know just what they loved about it. We know all the details they hold dear. And we know by twisting those, we can draw them back in, and make them care about this story again. Those hardcore SH fans know that Silent Hill is about surprises, and having your mind play tricks on you ... and that's just what we've done with the plot itself.

Destructoid: Do you believe there is a Silent Hill "timeline", and if so, how does Shattered Memories fit into it?

Tomm: Of course there is a Silent Hill timeline. But purists don't need to worry, Shattered Memories takes place in its own little universe, since it's a re-imagining. This isn't anything new to fans, as the movie had its own world, the comic has its own world, and so on. We re-imagined the survival horror "rules" with this title, and setting Shattered Memories outside of Silent Hill's timeline allows us a similar freedom.

Destructoid: The Silent Hill universe has always featured fog as a part of its setting. What made you decide to remove this element and replace it with ice? Does this new element have a symbolic meaning in the game?

Tomm: Well remember, the first game also featured snow (not ash, like the movie suggested). The fog factored into the themes and storytelling of the early titles. Similarly, our heavy snow is there to obscure your vision and establish a creepy atmosphere. Just like any element of a Silent Hill game, the snow and ice definitely have a thematic impact on the storyline.

Destructoid: Some series fans complained that Silent Hill: Homecoming focused too heavily on action and that playing in the role of Alex Shepard made gamers feel "too capable" when it came to combat. Did this factor into your decision to remove combat from Shattered Memories? If not, what brought the team to the decision to remove it?

Tomm: We've been hard at work on Shattered Memories for a long time, so it was not a direct reaction to any feedback from Homecoming. But, we have noticed that a lot of recent survival horror games have started focusing far more on action than "survival." (This is not a knock at anyone, Silent Hill is just as guilty.) Really, they're action games with ickier monsters. Running low on ammo happens in any game with guns -- it's not unique to the horror genre. So we wanted to step back, clean the slate, and go back to the roots of what makes a "survival horror" game. How would we scare the player? What would we allow them to do, etc etc. To that end, we did not "remove" combat. We built a game where the action is not about killing monsters.

Destructoid: How deeply will the psych profile that's been mentioned in previous interviews factor into the gameplay? Can choices you make affect your experience with Shattered Memories to a point where you suffer major consequences, such as death or losing chances to do certain things?

Tomm: I can't go into too much detail about the Psyche Profile at this time. I can say that it changes based on everything you do (you don't get "choices" per se, that's traditional game talk! Our game is watching you). However, you will never reach a situation where you have "missed" something. When Silent Hill closes a door, it opens a window.

Destructoid: The famous Pyramid Head was once thought to be exclusive to Silent Hill 2, but he's since made an apperance in Homecoming, so some would consider the character free to appear in any SH title. Will he appear in Shattered Memories? If not, is there a reason the team chose not to include him?

Tomm: I subscribe to the idea that Pyramid Head was unique to James Sunderland in Silent Hill 2. He's not just some guy who walks around with a big knife. I think if anyone was going to use Pyramid Head again, they would need a really good reason, and they would have to let him serve some kind of purpose. He was a heavy thematic character in SH2, and less so in SHH or the movie. Without the emotional ties to James, he loses his impact and is just a cheap scare, and that's doing a disservice to such an iconic character.

Destructoid: Climax has already made clear that the Wii version of Shattered Memories will be the definitive one. Will the PS2 and PSP versions be straight ports, or can we look forward to any extras for those two versions?

Tomm: Yes, Wii is the lead SKU for this title. That said, we are working hard to make sure that PS2 and PSP players don't just feel like they're playing a watered-down Wii title. There is a separate team at Climax working on the Sony versions to optimize them for their respective platforms. While the controls will obviously be different on the Wii, we want all players to have an optimal Shattered Memories experience.

Destructoid: The Wii is thought of as a family-friendly console, as you know, but gamers have been vocal about wanting more mature games for it. Will anything about Shattered Memories be toned down with the Wii's biggest demographic in mind, or can fans expect the same level of disturbing story and terrifying creatures that we have enjoyed from all the other SH games?

Tomm: We know there is a large contingent of hardcore and lapsed gamers on Wii who are clamoring for "real" titles. Silent Hill is real in every sense of the word. This is not a gameplay spinoff, it is a real Silent Hill title. These are real gameplay advances, not cheap control gimmicks. It's not a port. The rating is still pending, but rest assured it will be scary. At no point did we come to a crossroads and decide "well let's just do it this way because it's on Wii." It will twist your mind and creep you out just like any other good Silent Hill game would, and all the choices we made were to serve good gameplay or a compelling story - never a misguided notion of "Wii is for young'ns."

Destructoid: Thanks for your time, Tomm! "

SYNTHETICLUNG: How often (if at all) does Konami intervene when making a Silent Hill game?

TOMM: This is an important question! I think there is a mistaken belief that Publishers approach a Developer and ask them to build a game – kind of like a homework assignment – and turn it in by the deadline. Then the Developer goes off on their own and makes a game, then turns it in, and the Publisher tosses it on the shelf. However, this is NOT the case!

Konami is involved at every step of development, guiding the vision of the product and making changes to ensure it’s the best Silent Hill experience it can be. The easiest way to think of it is that Konami and Climax are making Shattered Memories TOGETHER, both parties doing different jobs to create a great end product. As Producer, I’m in charge of the game as a whole and nothing goes in without my approval. To be honest this is pretty pleasant on Shattered Memories, because Climax creates such awesome stuff. I don’t have to “fix” anything; I spend most of my time making sure all the cool stuff is as cool as it can be. (But don’t tell my supervisor that.)

Throughout Production, Konami ends up doing a lot of little odd jobs to make sure a Silent Hill game is a Silent Hill game. For example, on Homecoming I helped Designer Jason Allen figure out Pyramid Head’s “purpose,” and I wrote the Bogeyman nursery rhyme which you can find on drawings throughout that game.

I guess a much shorter answer would be "Konami is very involved in all aspects of the Silent Hill games."
VIXX: How would you describe this game to someone completely new to the Silent Hill universe?

TOMM: Do you enjoy going to horror movies? Silent Hill is a horror movie that you can play. You’re Harry Mason and you wake up after a car crash to find your daughter missing in the creepy town of Silent Hill. Find your daughter and watch out for the twisted creatures that pursue you.
RATIOCINATOR: Will there be an option to disable glowing items, onscreen arrow icons showing me where to look, and blue-glowing icy borders that tell me where to hop the wall? I like to be as immersed as possible and this kills it a bit.

TOMM: We’re still tweaking these elements. However, I think there is a misunderstanding about the “blue ice” – this element does not lead you to safety, or show you the way out of the Nightmare. It merely denotes areas where Harry can interact (open a door, climb a wall, etc). The Nightmare is so frantic and dark, that without adding these indicators, it was impossible for players to escape. I assure you this does not make the Nightmares easy or less scary.
LOVELESS_DOGG: Will any gameplay mechanics differ between platforms?

TOMM: The gameplay features will be the same regardless of platform; every version has exploration, puzzles, Nightmares, the psych profile, etc. The only major difference is that the Wii version will have the immersive control scheme based around the Wii Remote.
RATIOCINATOR: While navigating his cell phone, will Harry still be able to move on the screen?

TOMM: Yes, gameplay continues when Harry pulls out his cell phone.
DROO: Are you able to tell us how long the gameplay will last for Shattered Memories? Will it be relatively short like the original or will it be longer like more recent games in the series (SH4 and Homecoming)?

TOMM: Shattered Memories should be about as long as the average Silent Hill game. Of course, some players will examine every element of the background and take much longer to complete the game than others, so this will have an effect on the playtime as well.
TERMINUS: Will the player be able to sneak past and avoid enemies, or will the enemies always be aware of the player's presence and be able to find them?

TOMM: Yes, strategically avoiding enemies is a big element of the Nightmare sequences. The Nightmare you’ve seen is from the start of the game, so they get a lot more complex later on. Players can use the cell phone (static) to figure out where creatures are prowling and try to sneak past.
KAIRU: What is the A.I. of the monsters like? Do they follow simple routines, or do they react to the player and his/her actions?

TOMM: The creatures, which are called Raw Shocks, have a very advanced AI. They don’t have any patrol routes that they follow or anything that you’ve encountered in “sneak games.” They prowl about the Nightmare areas sniffing Harry out and communicating to one another, so if Harry is spotted, the other creatures will arrive soon. They’re a lot more agile than Harry and they know the environment, so they can break off from the group and flank him, or follow him through hidden tunnels, etc. They will definitely keep you on your toes.
WW_ANDI: Will there be specific things that you can hide inside or under in the game?

TOMM: Harry can duck inside closets or slide under tables/beds to briefly escape his pursuers. However, if he stays there too long the creatures will become suspicious and sniff him out, and then… well you’ve seen the E3 trailer ...
MEPHISTO: We know that weapons aren't going to be in the game, any chance to use your environment as a weapon?

TOMM: You can see it briefly in the trailer, but Harry can grab objects and knock them over to impede his pursuers.
TERMINUS: Will the player be able to backtrack and explore areas that may have been missed during chase scenes?

TOMM: In general, “Exploration” and “Escape” take place at different times, so players should not feel like they’re missing anything while fleeing. Later Nightmares may require the player to explore their environment to some degree – by carefully hiding and avoiding the creatures, players will be able to sneak back through the area. We’ve hidden little things in the Nightmares which may be interesting to look at – brave players can certainly seek these out if they want.
TERMINUS: Will there be multiple difficulty and puzzle difficulty settings?

TOMM: You won’t choose difficulty from a menu at the beginning like some games in the series. However, if you are having trouble the Psych Profile might recognize it ...
SILENT MADNESS: As a person who is hearing impaired, will there be subtitles on all cutscenes, including the parts where Harry responds about the item he's looking at?

TOMM: There will be an option to turn subtitles on, and these will cover all dialogue in the game.
GREVIOUS GARLAND: Are health items present? If so, in what form?

TOMM: You won’t be finding any Health Drinks or First Aid Kits this time around.
RATIOCINATOR: What methods/items will be used to heal Harry if he becomes injured in any way?

TOMM: When Harry gets tackled, it fatigues him… and when that happens enough, he’ll collapse and the game will end. However, if he can avoid attack for long enough, he may gradually begin to recover.
NANAYASHIKI: I believe it was said that scattered memos and messages (a series staple) have been removed. Personally I am sad to see these go as they were something I really enjoyed, although I admit the memos themselves have gotten significantly less interesting in recent titles such as Homecoming. Yet, they still have always served a purpose of giving glimpses into the lives of other people, or holding some deep significance to the main character or plot that players may not catch on their first time through, while some were just there because they were so odd and interesting. With these memos and notes gone, has the development team taken any new steps to offer something as a replacement with the same effect?

TOMM: The notes and memos are a big part of conveying setting and story/theme to the player in the old Silent Hill games. However, they also don’t make much sense realistically. Sure, “the town” could be manifesting those notes, but why notes? Why not something more direct? In Shattered Memories, Harry will be able to take photographs, and receive texts and voicemails. These will all fill the role that was once played by the random notes. So instead of reading a note about some creepy thing that happened… now you might hear whatever that is while it takes place, or see the aftermath, etc.
DISTANTJ: I'm worried about the running from monsters. Will there still be surprises if the monsters are only in the dark world, and the light world is just puzzles? Will I still feel like something might jump out at me?

TOMM: I’m going to toss this question to Sam Barlow from Climax, the game’s Lead Designer.

SAM: We have had focus testers ask to stop playing because they are 'too scared' during exploration. The world of Silent Hill is not a nice place, so exploring it isn't a walk in the park. Yes there are scares, but in the main it's about suspense -- the atmosphere of dread and not knowing when the nightmare is coming -- in this case it's not always as clear cut as it was in the previous games (where the nightmare would come once you'd ticked off 90% of the map). Also, given the things you will see and hear there, it's not accurate to call exploration the "light world". It's a place where bad things happen; things so bad they have to be frozen.
HARRY’S GIRL: In response to the questionnaire, I pose this question, is there simply going to be a single questionnaire in the beginning of the game or will there be follow up questionnaires/trigger points which try to measure the impact that the game has on the player? The first questionnaire seemed to be a broad spectrum analysis that doesn't really focus in on any particular points of personality. But I wonder if there will be follow up questionnaire given to Harry by the good doctor to see how he is reacting to the way his memories play out?

TOMM: You haven’t seen the last of Dr. K. I wouldn’t be surprised if he had more exercises for you, either.
NANAYASHIKI: I'll be blunt and brutal for a moment: Homecoming had horrible puzzles and in that regard let me down greatly. Silent Hill's puzzles were always a huge part of the gameplay for me. Are puzzles featured more prominently in Shattered Memories than they were in Homecoming?

TOMM: Puzzles are much more of a gameplay element in Shattered Memories than perhaps any previous Silent Hill title. Because of the Wii Remote, there are a lot of real-world interactions that we can let the player experience hands-on, instead of in a passive way like in the old games. Our goal was to use these to integrate puzzles seamlessly into the game, rather than have them as “progress stoppers” that feel unnatural and forced. I think we’ve succeeded in doing this, so you won’t feel pulled out of the game by the puzzles.
LOVELESS_DOGG: How will the player deal with bosses, considering the lack of a traditional combat system?

TOMM: I can’t go into detail about this right now, but I will say you should expand your definition of what a “boss” is. They can be more than a big monster you hit a bunch of times.
MEPHISTO: Will Harry have his own "monster," like Travis did, or are you guys going to recycle PH?

TOMM: We do it one better and have neither of those things! The Psych Profile will change the Raw Shocks as you play the game, so by the end you are pursued by YOUR own "monster." This takes the same theme that led to Pyramid Head’s creation and tailors it a bit for each player.
LOVELESS_DOGG: In terms of story what has been one of the major influences the team has focused on?

TOMM: Sam wrote a great story for Shattered Memories...

SAM: The story is about memory and family. Many of the team are parents of young children and we have drawn upon our experiences and our hopes and fears to create a story that explores these ideas. In its essence, family is physical memory -- DNA carries its memories across generations -- but it is also about non-physical memory: shared stories, aural histories and individual recollections. As is often the case, it is the extreme moments in life -- such as a car crash -- that bring to the fore exactly what family means. Exploring Harry's experience allowed us to create what we believe is a deep exploration of these ideas.
CLYDE: Every Silent Hill game seems to have powerful themes that reoccur throughout the game. What theme(s) are we going to be presented with in Shattered Memories?

TOMM: I of course can’t give away too many of the themes, or you won’t have any reason to play the game! But I am really excited. I’m going to have to troll the boards after release just to watch everyone discuss the game. Sam’s previous answer hints at some of the themes present in the game, and you might consider the subtitle as well.
BURNING MAN: You've promoted Shattered Memories to have mature themes. Can you tell us what defines a "mature theme", in your personal opinion, and how you plan to present them to the audience with Shattered Memories?

TOMM: Ever since the dawning of the ESRB, games have featured nudity and excessive violence and touted these as “mature themes.” However the Silent Hill series was always different, and the mature themes had more to do with the storylines – assisted suicide, serial murders, etc. The mature themes in Shattered Memories are the same way; actual issues and plot events for mature players rather than just "stuff kids shouldn’t see."
ENIKA: When working with the storyline, have you drawn any inspiration from the Silent Hill movie?

TOMM: The movie exists in its own reality outside of the games, so no.
RESTORATION01: Will there be a proper name for Harry's wife?

TOMM: Yes.
JDNATION: Can you tell us about the voice/mo-cap cast? Have any of the old actors returned?

TOMM: We did not re-use any actors from the original game. I actually chose Harry’s actor the second I saw his character model; I thought it was a perfect fit. We’ve gotten a lot of positive responses from the limited dialogue we’ve released so far in gameplay videos and the trailer, so I’m confident fans will be happy with the end result.
NANAYASHIKI: Sexual themes have been a part of Silent Hill for some time now but have lost any real significance as the series has gone on. Already in Shattered Memories we see that it is possible to have Cybil appear all sexy depending on the player’s actions. Exactly how heavy are the sexual themes in this game? Will we see monsters with clear sexual symbolism going on? Do they hold any significance or are they there simply for the sake of having sexual themes?

TOMM: As you’ve seen, your Psych Profile can affect a lot of different aspects of the game. This isn’t just for show, but also alters the storyline and themes presented. So nothing is just there for shock value. At this time, that’s about all I can disclose.
KAIRU: Are all characters affected by the evaluation at the beginning, even Harry?

TOMM: Everything is affected by the Psych Profile, yes. But I need to stress that the psych profile is not “that evaluation at the beginning.” The game is constantly watching every single thing you do. The evaluation is just a starting point. For example I can choose the “sex” answers, but still end up with hardass Cybil. Anyone thinking there is a 1 to 1 correlation between the evaluation answers and what they see is going to be surprised.
FUTURES: Will monster symbolism be quite as deep with this whole psychological evaluation aspect of the game?

TOMM: They are likely to be deeper, since they’re tuned to you the player.
HARRYS GIRL: Why did you choose to change the plotline so that Harry and Cheryl live in SH? Doesn't making it Harry’s hometown take away from the fear of being in an unknown area and alone? How can you tell the original story, of Alessa calling Cheryl to the town, if Cheryl has lived there the entire time? And by the age/physical appearance of Dahlia, the new plotline seems to have absolutely nothing to do with the original SH, so why not just make it an entirely new game, instead of tramping about on an already existing plotline? Was it to bring in old fans while still targeting old fans, or some other reason?

TOMM: Silent Hill is about characters who realize that reality is not what they thought it was at the start of the game. James thought his wife died of illness 3 years earlier. Heather thought she was a regular girl. Henry thought he’d bought a sweet apartment with low rent, a view, and convenient shopping nearby.

By reimagining the original game, we can place fans directly into Silent Hill. You think you know what "reality" is, and you think you know what to expect ... but you don’t, because you’re in Silent Hill now. You’re part of the experience on a level that newcomers can’t be. When Dahlia showed up in the trailer, you didn’t think "I wonder what role that character will play." like you did when you first saw Angela and Eddie. You probably thought “That’s not Dahlia! What’s going on!?” You probably felt a bit like James when he first met Maria. This is at the core of why we chose to reimagine the original.
FUDGESTIX: I don't know if this has been cleared up elsewhere, but I'd quite like to know the reasoning behind choosing ice. Obviously you wanted to differentiate the game from previous canon, but is there a more in depth reason?

TOMM: In Silent Hill 2, there is a scene with Angela in the staircase (my favorite scene in the series actually). Everything is on fire, and something she says reveals that this is her “otherworld” just like James’s had been kind of dark and moldy and wet to that point. This has huge ramifications across the series, that each person has their own personal hell.

However, everyone seems to have forgotten this and picture Alessa’s Nightmare as the only otherworld: red, rusty, off we go. Ever since I saw Angela on that staircase, though, I knew that if I was in charge of a Silent Hill game, I would make sure to explore this theme. Here we are.
KROD: Will you guys try to answer some of the mysteries left in the original SH1 game?

TOMM: What mysteries might those be?
ALONE IN THE TOWN: The dichotomy between what we call "foggy Silent Hill" and the "Otherworld" is one of the most fascinating recurring aspects in the Silent Hill series, but little is ever revealed to us as to how this actually works. Is it possible that some secrets about this process may be revealed throughout the course of the game?

TOMM: I think a lot of the ongoing mysteries are the most interesting parts of Silent Hill (like, are there really monsters? Or is Heather beating up real people?). It’s these things that keep fans discussing the games years after they’re off the shelves. So naturally there will be some clues, but I can’t guarantee hard answers – just lots of food for thought.
FLOWN: what is making the town turn icy?

TOMM: Nice try! You’re just going to have to play the game, my friend.
DAMIENPALES: Will the soundtrack be re-dos of old Silent Hill songs in keeping with the re-imagining theme, entirely new compositions, or a mixture of both?

TOMM: Akira is composing all new songs for the soundtrack, however, some may reference older songs from the series history.
HARRYS GIRL: I noticed on one of the first doors that Harry enters through that there was something written in red paint. Upon looking at it more, I deciphered: "DEAD DOG" then a small dog-like figure. I assume that it is a reference to the dead dog in the alley at the beginning of the original game. Can we expect a lot of references to the original?

TOMM: Very good eyes! There will be a lot of subtle references if you know where to look.
KAIRU: Apart from Akira Yamaoka, has there been any contact, questions, or help of any kind from people who worked on previous Silent Hills?

TOMM: Early on, yes.

SAM: We had a couple of calls and Q&As via translators with the remaining team members from SH1 still at Konami. They answered all our questions (or those they could remember the answers to) regarding the original game, its secrets, and their original intentions. Some of the answers were surprising, but we're sworn to secrecy!
KAIRU: Are you pleased with the new angle the team is taking with Silent Hill, or dissatisfied with it in any way?

TOMM: As I explained earlier, Shattered Memories is something that Konami and Climax are making together, with Konami ultimately directing the overall vision. Naturally, everyone involved is very excited about the game, and it seemed to get a lot of positive attention at E3.
DROO: In one recent interview, it seemed almost as if your team was dismissive of Double Helix's Homecoming instalment. How do you feel about Homecoming?

TOMM: I think that was a misunderstanding. Nobody is dismissive of Homecoming (after all, I worked on it). The question you’re referring to was about Pyramid Head specifically, and I commented that if he were to appear in a later game, it would need to be an appearance that tied centrally to the game’s plot (like in Silent Hill 2) rather than a cameo. PH is an awesome, recognizable character, but that doesn’t mean he should be trotted out in predictable ways – that’s a sure fire way to ruin his impact and lose what makes him great.
ARSONIST: In 0rigins, team Climax clung to the original Silent Hill. Why did you choose to cling to the same game once again, rather then writing your own, original storyline?

TOMM: With Origins, Konami wanted to explore the details leading up to the events of the first game. This seemed like a great way to bring the classic Silent Hill to a portable system. This gave Silent Hill fans on the PSP a new view of one of their favorites, but allowed newcomers to enter into the story without needing to have any prior knowledge.

In a similar way, there are a lot of Wii gamers who maybe haven’t played Silent Hill before. It wouldn’t be fair to throw them into the game after Homecoming and expect them to understand what was going on. So starting “at the beginning” makes sense for them. At the same time, we need to keep it compelling for long time fans like you guys. So by reimagining it, there’s a reason for you to go back and see if Silent Hill is really at all like you thought it was.
ARSONIST: What sources, other then previous Silent hill titles, have you used as an inspiration for SH:SM? (other games, movies, books and such)

TOMM: I personally get a lot of inspiration from non-horror games and movies. It’s helpful when you’re trying to think outside the box to look outside of that box for inspiration. But I imagine the guys at Climax have their own sources, too ...

SAM: Here’s an excerpt from our design doc listing reference materials:

Hitchcock’s Vertigo, Clouzot’s Les Diaboliques, Boileau & Narcejac’s “Who was Clare Jallu?”, Friday the 13th, Halloween, Psycho, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Brood, The Machinist, Bunuel, David Lynch, Hitchcock, Max Ernst, Edward Hopper, Troy Paiva, Jim Thompson, Gene Wolfe, Kobo Abe, Georges Bataille, Freud, Eric Berne, Baudelaire
BISHOP SASARAI: Will you continue to produce more titles for the Wii that are for mature audiences? Be it horror or not, the Wii needs to grow up some and hopefully Shattered Memories will help in that need.

TOMM: If they’ll let me! I think there are a lot of adults playing the Wii, so it makes sense to have more mature titles.
KENJI: This being the third Western Silent Hill game, how have the last two changed your opinions about the franchise and/or the process of producing games for it?

TOMM: I’ve been extremely lucky, and gotten to work on all three Western Silent Hills. I’m a huge fan of the series, so it’s been a great honor. I can also say that everyone who worked on Origins and Homecoming had the utmost respect for the series and its fans.

Coming in as a fan, of course, I had my own ideas about what Silent Hill meant and what it should be like – but being a part of it for years now, I’ve changed a lot of my opinions. If there’s one thing I’ve learned it’s that Silent Hill is a place of subjectivity. The moment you know something “for sure” is the moment you’re wrong. Of course this makes sense, because the best way for something to be un-scary is for it to be known and predictable. Silent Hill is the ultimate horror because it can NEVER be known. There’s an intangible quality in the best Silent Hill games, and if I had to guess at what that is, I’d say it’s a level of ambiguity.

Since Shattered Memories is the first Silent Hill that I’m in charge of, I hope it meets your expectations and is one of the most memorable times you spend in our favorite town.
KRYSTA: The SH1 universe has been exploited to the limit already (Origins, movie, comics, play novels, SH3). I'm tired of SH1 ... will you do a reimagining of SH2?

TOMM: It seems like reimagining SH1 was dangerous enough… would you guys really want us changing what is arguably the fan-favorite of the series?
CLYDE: Are there any elements of Shattered Memories that you're afraid may turn-off fans of the series?

TOMM: I hope not. We really tried to go back and focus on what Silent Hill “is.” I know it seems like we changed a lot, but none of those elements are things that defined Silent Hill. Personally, playing SH1 and then Shattered Memories might be the ultimate Silent Hill experience.
ENIKA: What inspired you to give Silent Hill a more modern feel and give Harry use of modern technology for the game?

TOMM: Interesting question ...

SAM: The game is set in the modern day, so this made sense. For us, putting a story in a historical setting is only worth doing if there's a reason, if the setting provides some extra layer or contrast to the story. There was no need for that in this game, so it takes place in the modern day -- making it accessible and more resonant with the audience who will be playing it.
GREVIOUS GARLAND: How do you personally see Lisa’s character? Do you agree with how she was portrayed in Origins?

TOMM: Lisa is one of my favorite characters in the series. What interested me about her was that this “damsel” type character turned out to just be another part of the town. At the same time, it was hinted that the “real” Lisa was a troubled individual. This is a cool dichotomy, because even the people in real life we think are sweet and innocent might have darker sides as well that we don’t let ourselves see. I think in Origins, we get to see this darker side and maybe it’s not pleasant for everyone...but that is still something “real” Lisa has to deal with, and maybe she dealt with it by never revealing that side to Alessa. Then again, since this is Silent Hill, maybe Climax saw a “different” Lisa than you did, and maybe I saw a third Lisa when I played the game.
ENGULFED IN FOG: This is a really simple question: do you feel that this game will scare and disturb players?

TOMM: You might be onto something with this "scare the player" idea ... ;)
KAIRU: Have you and the team enjoyed being given another opportunity to work on everyone's favourite fictional lakeside town Silent Hill?

TOMM: It’s been an honor, but I already kind of answered this for Kenji… How does Climax feel, Sam?

SAM: We have absolutely enjoyed it. We're all passionate about the things that make Silent Hill special and there's no other franchise like it as far as storytelling and atmosphere goes.
NANAYASHIKI: Not including Shattered Memories, what is your personal favorite game in the series?

TOMM: My favorite is Silent Hill 2, and I already rambled about why. I think it’s the game that most “explains” Silent Hill, using a very personal story.

SAM: Silent Hill on the GBA.

Only joking. Probably a tie between Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill 1. I'm a big Hitchcock fan, so Silent Hill 4's Rear Window thing got me really excited, but the game didn't quite gel for me. Silent Hill 3 wasn't to my tastes. Silent Hill 1 was fresh and exciting when it hit and the atmosphere is still potent, whilst Silent Hill 2's story and memorable flavour went a long way to make up for its gameplay shortcomings.
KLIMAT: I wonder how big the Team Silent documentation legacy is. There is a Homecoming guide that lists what years each game takes place in. Are these endorsed by Konami as official dates? Or are developers free to do what they wish with the timeline?

TOMM: Konami definitely has information and dates that we work off of, but an important part of Silent Hill is keeping those things secret. (Just part of that ambiguity.) So, the writers of that guide were probably just giving context to the events of the games, but those should not be considered “canonical” dates. Also as I mentioned earlier, Konami is still in charge of all the games, so nothing a developer does is ever just for the heck of it.
JDNATION: Will the PSP version be available on both UMD and digital distribution through the PSN store?

TOMM: We’re still evaluating this possibility.
CHIA2141: What is the psp release date? ^_^

TOMM: We’re aiming to launch the game on all platforms at the same time.
VIXX: We all know that the Silent Hill fan community is one of the most protective ones out there.:P But how important is fan reaction whilst developing a game? Have you or would you make changes to a game on the basis of fan reaction?

TOMM: By the time the game is available for fans to see, it’s usually too far along in production for anything major to change. One exception was during Homecoming – we did change Alex’s hair and voice, but that had less to do with petitions and was more because we’d been planning to change those things anyway. It just so happened the fans and Konami wanted the same thing!

Fan feedback is always appreciated though, because it shows us people actually care about what we’ve spent years of our lives working on. I must say, we were expecting a lot more negative reaction to Dahlia’s reveal ... Seems like you guys are ready for anything!
VIXX: Sell this game to us in three words or less!

TOMM: Three words? Um ... “Silent Hill’s back!” Does that work? Thanks again, everyone!!!

Apparently SHSM comes out next month on the Wii and in 2010 on the PS2/PSP, but here is a new song from Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, Joe Romersa and Akira Yamaoka!

Interesting cover, the new song's quite different but I like it. My ister's been badgering me about what game I want for christmas so I might tell her to get me SH for the Wii.

It's a new direction in the songs it seems...there is actually a song that almost edges onto Pop music territory  it has a catchy chorus

And the fact it's developed by a Western country. A lot more eastern games are westernising themselves now since game sales are down in their own territories.

I'm sorry to use a gif but

It'll be interesting to see how the next game changes because of it, and I'm not happy that SHSM isn't out here until next year.

Indeed, tis the end of an era

apparently SHSM is a good game :D

The reviews have been glowing, I'm disapointed we're not getting it this month liek the americans though I thought we were, I was rather looking foward to playing it over Christmas oh well.

*looks at release schedule for next year * Oh poor Wallet, how you'll suffer.

Scarlett.
13-12-2009, 02:16 AM
lol mine has suffered enough this year xD

I noticed that it was out yesterday, it was a rather sudden release sicne I thought it got delayed. I'm gonna get it for the Wii next month I think.

Scarlett.
02-03-2010, 02:18 PM
It was supposed to be released on the PS2 on the 4th, but it seems a lot of people already have it xD

I don't know. It was quite strange. And the actor was not stocky enough. He was way too skinny for the role.

Scarlett.
04-03-2010, 07:22 PM
indeed, I prefer the Pyramid Head from Silent Hill 2

Have you watched Fukuro from the art of Silent Hill? Think Valtiel is in that.

I should really play SH3 again. It's been a while.

Apparently Shattered Memories has a story that is even better than SH1

Tom4784
06-03-2010, 03:46 PM
SH2 will always be my favourite, I loved the story. I remember watching the making of the film and apparently PH was played by a brazillian model.

I only ever played SH3 once but I did like it, I'll have to see if I can get the PC version somewhere eventually *puts it down on my list of wants*

Scarlett.
06-03-2010, 03:50 PM
Silent Hill 3 is a great game IMO, mostly because of the way Heather comments on everything, like James would say

"It's a dead body, I wonder who did this?"

Heather would say
"What the hell? what killed this person?"

It was more interesting xD

Scarlett.
07-03-2010, 01:44 PM
A video I found of poor Harry and his script limitations

8NJVZpUpQKI

I hear SHSM's Harry is less of an idiot xD

Yeah, I agree. Heather's reactions and commentary had more human emotion to them, whereas James didn't really seem phased, haha.

I ordered SHSM for the PS2 :D

Scarlett.
13-03-2010, 03:42 PM
Wow! I completed Shattered Memories....it was...brilliant...I'd go so far as to say the story is as good as SH's old days, the puzzles are good and the 'Otherworld' is as intense as ever

SHSM proves SH doesnt need blood, fire and brimstone to be a good game

14-03-2010, 03:41 PM
The game has a psychology warning, at first I though 'pffft' but the game did seem to get to know me, and told me somethings that arent so good about myself, and I suppose some might not want to hear such things :p

Tom4784
14-03-2010, 03:54 PM

Yeah, it was only ever a choice between the Wii and the PSP for me though as I'm pretty sure the PS2 is broken.

Yeah but I've only got a few games left for the PS2 and it wouldn't really be worth getting a new PS2 for one game. I'm quite looking foward to it, should keep me busy on the game front after I complete FFXIII

Scarlett.
16-03-2010, 05:34 PM
I'm resting it for at least a week or two now, I dont want to overplay it xD

Vatra confirmed they are making the game via Twitter and Facebook

Silent Hill 6 will;
- Be made on Unreal engine 3 (used for Mass Effect, Splinter Cell, Bioshock, Gears of War ect.)
- Story will be main focus
- Story will be original and NOT a reimagining

Scarlett.

Deffo, the producer said so xD

If you like the soundtrack, look up "Akira Yamaoka" he is the composer for all 7 Silent Hill games, and Mary Elizabeth McGlynn who has sang on 5 of the games
