Might look like it but for me its the 3rd joint fave. And the general feeling of BB9 is that it was good. It increased by about 100,000 generally from the 1st week compared to the last, whereas BB8 dropped quite a lot. It had nothing to do with the quality. If BB9 was on after BB3, Im sur eit would have got over 5m average, and if BB4 was on now it would get under 3m judging by how boring it was.
Also BB9 launched with almost 1m less than BB8 and it only managed to average 300,000 less than BB8 if that makes sense, if BB9 launched at the same rating as BB8, BB9 would have averaged roughly 4.1m (200,000 more than BB8). If that makes any sense.

Who said it was 3rd favourite? The facts don't show that.

Matter of opinion.

No, it didn't see an increase according to the ratings posted aboce. Week 1: 3.56m, Week 13: 3.51m
So it was slightly down.

1. I said for ME its joint 3rd fave.
2. Not really an opinion, polls on DS, Inside BB have shown that it is the 3rd/4th fave. Also on a general note, friends, family preferred it much more than BB8
3. Sorry about that, made mistake, but it still held up better than BB8.

X Factor has effectively been on since 2000, because it's very similar to Pop Stars and Pop Idol- basically the same core concept.
It's now as popular as it's ever been.
It's not about the show being tired. It's about it being absolutely dreadful so people have stoppped watching.

1. OK
2. It is an opinion. Those polls are on websites that only big Big Brother fans would visit.
If you ask a normal person on the street who watches BB now and then as a casual thing, I doubt many would say BB9 was one of their favourites.
3. Yeah, indeed it held up better than BB8. But it still had a lower rating final than launch, which on the whole is a rare thing.

My guess for the BB10 launch is about 4.8 million. This is only a rough guess and that is only if it launches on June the 4th (which I hope it will do). If BB10 launches on June the 3rd (up against The Apprentice, which I love, just as much as BB), then I think maybe about 4.1 million for the launch.
These estimates are not very accurate because we have no information on the series at this moment in time. As more information emerges and the advertising campaign starts, we can give a more precise figure for the launch night ratings.
I really hope that we get a small amount of information. Too much knowledge on the upcoming series kind of spoils it. If Channel 4 held back on giving us the house pictures and saved the first look at the house for the house tour given by Davina, there would be more anticipation for the launch. I think that Channel 4 do need to give us the date for the launch night in the next few days though. If they do this and then kick off the advertising campain within two weeks from today, then they can hope for some decent ratings.
The adverts need to be completely different from what we have seen in previous years. If they are quirky and unique, it will get people talking. Maybe a few clues to the house, possibly sneak peaks at the house itself and maybe a few details about a couple of the housemates.
Sorry about the essay but it's what I think will help the ratings for launch night. Anticipation needs to be built up, Channel 4 are doing a pretty good job of it at the minute because other forum members are wondering when we are going to get our first snippets of information.
Locke.

Excuses excuses.
Britain's Got Talent has so many repeats and still it's doing amazingly this year.
If I remember correctly, there was a stat going round saying that last year Big Brother was the ONLY reality show to lose viewers. Every other show increased.
It just shows what people think of the show. The producers are doing no favours getting rid of the live feed.

I agree brad.x c4 have kind of kicked bb to the curb over the last few years.
Since the race row from cbb5 and all the controversy caused by it, c4 have downplayed the show a lot more ---> BB8. The advertising needs to be beefed up this year especially because of the 10th edition. They need to create that aura and mystery that bb to be surrounded in. Last year they were incredibly stupid in releasing all the house pictures on the website especially the diary room pics. But in fairness to c4, this year they seemed to have kept their mouths shut. And as much as i hate not knowing anything, i know this could ultimately end up saving bb.

Imo, BB is holding up well generally compared to everything else on C4.
But with BGT its a different story. There are many reasons why BGT gets better ratings:
1. Its on ITV
2. Its in its 3rd year (in BB's 3rd year, they hit their peak of an average of 5.8m and a final of over 10m)
3. Its a family show, its watched by kids a sits on before the watershed, BB is aimed at a target group and kids and older parents are less likely to watch with family compared to BGT and is on after 9pm. Families wont watch BB because of the nudity and language.
4. BGT is treated like the King of Reality shows on ITV, C4 just cant be bothered with BB.
3.

Just read on DS that The F Word is being pushed back to later this year and with no real looking 9pm shows in the press pack by C4 it looks that Big Brother will get the 9pm slot
I do think the show suits the 10pm slot better but maybe its best to give it the 9pm slot meaning there is 2 prime time slots (C4 and +1) to watch the show and hopefully increase the amount of viewers.

Really though The X Factor has effectively been going just as long. OK, the show itself didn't start until 2004 but it's predecessors Popstars and Pop Idol were around in 2001.

I prefer 10pm and in theory it should do better there against the news on BBC1 and ITV1 - and has in the past. However, last year it generally performed better at 9pm than at 10pm.
I think the important thing is whether at 9pm or 10pm it's in the same slot every night (well, Mon-Thu). Consistency is the key, as when it alternates viewers just don't know what time to expect it each night.

I previously predicted that the launch would get viewing figures of 4.8 million, that was on the 3rd of May. Now that I have seen the pre-BB hype unfold, I will make another guess. I think that the launch will get 5.1 milliion viewers.
CBB6 Launch - 6.1 million
BB9 Launch - 5.8 million
BB10's launch will have no problem in competing with previous Launch ratings.
TBH i think most of you are purposely exadurating how bad the ratings are going to be.

I do think the launch will go any way.
Firstly the BAD way:
BB10 is already doomed before its going to begin, the news about no love feed has created a negativity about the show. Also after CBB6's final of 3.3m-3.5m its worried everyone, I never thought a rating for a final would be that bad even if it was a boring series.
The GOOD way:
BB and CBB bring in DIFFERENT audiences, I know for a fact that CBB6 brought a large numbe rof people from ages 40 and over because most of the HMs were older. BB9's launch averaged at 5.8m and CBB6 averaged at 6m, and that is spectacular seeing as people were saying the show is dead. So if we have a range of HMs, the older audience of CBB6 and the younger taget audiences from BB9 will come together and get a respectable launch night figure. Also the ads look different, they could bring in old viewers, maybe?
Anyone agree??

Is it possible only 3.5 million rune in for BB10 launch?
only 3.5 million tuned in for CBB6 final.

I don't think BB10 is doomed because of no live feed. Realistically out of the 3-4 million who watch the highlight shows every night not that may people watch the live feed and of those not that many will stop watching because of it.
I'm still thinking above 5 million for launch because a launch show will always do well but it could be a lot higher or lower depending on promotion
The adverts are good but the same as ever year. There needs to be an advert during BGT
Also the press don't seem to be taking much of an interest so it is hard to predict how many people know when Big Brother is starting.

yep thats the only thing im worrying about, but like i said, lots of the taget audience of BB wouldnt have tuned into see the final i dont think, 4 of the 5 finalists were over 40.
But like i said the launch of CBB6 got 6m which still indicates that BB still has the power to pull in large audiences, the 6m shows us that the people interested are still there, they just need to sustain as much of the launch audience as possible.

MAybe the pulling power has now gone after the disasterous CBB6?
People might have given CBB 6 launch a chance because it had taken a break, and some people might have tuned in out of curiosity.
Now, people might have got pissed off by that series and not tune in for BB10.
I hope not.

I'd say a 3.3m average....hopefully 5.2 tune in for the Launch
They NEED to show the Launch night advert on BGT on Friday night.

Maybe its pulling power is gone but maybe not.
I mean after the Nikki twist, everyone was saying that was the start of the trouble, but the final of BB7 got 8.3m! The launch of BB8 got a high amount as did BB9s launch and CBB6 launch even though people were doubting BB and saying that it would do bad. The CBB6 launch told us that fans wont give up on the show easily even though BB has made LOADS of mistakes.
People keep saying "Oh the pulling power has gone" but it keeps getting respectable audiences. If the BB10 launch does really bad then i apologize and you are right about the power going, but BB has had so many chances and they still havnt hit rock bottom.

Some good news for BB10
On a Friday night from June both BBC1 and ITV1 will be airing repeats of Outnumbered and Doc Martin
and with the majority of channels giving up on a Friday it looks like Big Brother could do very well for its eviction shows

Anything over 5million would be a real triumph IMO!
Spike
30-05-2009, 10:19 AM
BGT got 13.1million viewers with a 15million (62%) peak on a night with very nice weather
I know its a bit of a different audience to Big Brother but it got over 3million in the 16-34's.
So that shows if a person wants to watch a show they will stop in on a Friday night and watch it. If Big Brother is good enough surely people will watch the biggest show of the week, the eviction on a Friday night but only if it becomes unmissable TV again

Anyway, I think that the launch will get 4.8m. The first HL show will get 3.2m imo.
The lack of live feed has only really caused negativity amongst internet fans though, most normal viewers don't actually know or care. "Live feed" to most ordinary fans is what E4 show.
I don't really think that many will be turned away by CBB6, especially as it has a different audience to BB itself. So I expect BB launch to at least match the 5m set by the BB9 final.
I think we're actually worrying over nothing tbh .... BB10 will probably be the lowest rated but thats just due to BB running its course.

I agree that we shouldnt read much into the overnights because he officials add about 400,000-500,000 to the launch.

but a good thing it that the 16-34's are up on over 100,00 from last year
I think i predicted 5m in this thread but i can't find it.
They should aim for the ratings Hells Kitchen got, it launched with roughly the same figure (BB up 0.1m) and ended on 5.2m ... it got about 3-4m each day except the odd day and there is no reason why BB can't get similar ratings.

Hells Kitchen was on for 2-3weeks in the spring when the weather wasn't too good and also it was on ITV which already put around 0.5-1million onto the figures.
So its hard for Big Brother to do something similar because it on in the summer, over 13 weeks and on C4
Big Brother should be targeting an average of over 3million for the series and that will be seen as a success

The difference with BB and BGT is that BGT appeals to a large audience. The judges knew what they were doing when they let acts like 2 Grand through because it helped the ratings go high. And it definitely succeeded being one of the most highest rated shows since some football game.

Wow this is so bad ! Worst than I expected. So yeah I was right, this is going to be a flop once again. I mean, first week ratings are generally high and then drop but now it's very low.
Thing is... I never bothered to watch highlights show yesterday because I watched the Live Launch and it just shows them going in... which I already saw. Maybe others did that.
I reckon it will build, I don't think 3m is catastrophic... it isn't as great as BB5, but it beats loads of other shows.

I think it will get better ratings tonight because of the bad weather and its a show which wont be repeating most of what people have already seen. Also a lot of people who were negative after the launch are liking the show more after watching last nights show which could help tonight

BB5 didn't do so well at the start anyway, neither did CBB5. Both had a pivotal point of controversy around them to boost the ratings for the rest of the series.
I think its unfair to compare 5.1 to 2.7 anyway. One is without C4+1 so either its fair to say last night got 3-3.2m with +1 or just isolate C4 launch figures alone (4.8m) meaning the drop isn't as big as people seem and is only a little bit more than most years. And using a similar show Hells Kitchen had a big launch, lost half of its audience then built it all back up again by the end in a similar situation to what BB is in (minimal coverage, no streaming). I wouldn't write it off just yet.
Tonight probably won't do that well anyway because its Saturday, so probably about 2.4m.

But then again, were only into the first few days, and it is the weekend... so let's wait to see what the ratings are like tonight and throughout the working week.
Is there any possibility that if Big Brother does just keep going downhill from now that a bigger channel will take over? Because I'd imagine if it were on one of the bigger channels, it will be rolling in ratings.

No one is denying the poor slot and opposition had an effect.
But the trends and correlations suggest that havign no live feed is affecting the ratings as well. To what degree? We don't know. But it certainly is affecting the show, and most importantly it is ruining the viewing experience for a lot of the fans.
If the fans aren't pleased with the show, then you're obviously not doing a good job (aimed at C4).

Of course it was nothing to do with competition/slot and they haven't had similar things happen in the past and recovered have they?

Of course competition is a factor, but not the only 1. Channel 4's incompetence is baffling. Some schoolboy errors they've been making.

I didn't say competition was the only factor if you read my post properly. I'm simply contesting the view that it won't be above 2m much, what a load of rubbish.
to be fair the amount of views that it is getting is still alot, i mean obviously its not as much as used to get but thats the same with most programmes, theyve got to start a slow downfall at some point, i think it will stick at these at ratings and theres nothing wrong with that, the launch show took 22% of television viewers at the 9pm slot which is still very good!

Not much, no. 1.9m for an eviction show is hideous, no matter what the competition.

Nice how you completely disregard the time slot, and that this has happened in the past (although not to this extent). If it was 10-11pm and managed that figure then that would be beyond bad, but because it finished close to midnight, its just bad.

Anyways, predictions for tonight, Monday usually is also quite a low night for BB, and Tues-Thurs are the days where BB gets the highest.
At this point, i guess 3m would be seen as a sucess, and Friday got 3.0m (which in officials will bring it to 3.3m-3.4m which would be the series average of CBB6, so if BB10 averages 3-3.3m it wil be seen as a sucess)
Monday- 2.7m (in BB9 Mondays were getting 2.8-3.2m so 2.7 wouldnt be bad)
Tuesday- 3.1m (have a feeling it will break the 3m barrier)

I predict 2.3-2.5m for tonight including C4+1. Another shambolic rating, just watch.

08-06-2009, 07:49 PM
Im going to be brave and guess 2.7m. I will be very shocked if it breaks 3m. The only days i think it could have a chance to break 3m is Tues, Weds and Thursday,
2.7m would be a good figure at this stage I think, all they need to do is stabalise it then build on it. In BB9 all Mondays fell somewhere between 2.7m and 3.3m. I know theres the argument that the first week rates better but maybe we've hit the rocks so to speak which most series' never do until about 2 weeks in. This series could buck the trend I suppose. We'll soon see. Anyway some comparative daily figures from last year:
Monday- 2.7m-3.3m
Tuesday- 3.3m-3.6m ... 3.8m with special show (Tuesday had a strong lead in I think but I've forgotten what)
Wednesday- 3m-3.7 (that got shifted mid series I think theres a jump in the middle)
Thursday- 3.2m-3.6m ... Alex ejection 4.3m, launch 5.4m
Friday 1- 3.3m-4m ... 4.2m final
Friday 2- 2.7m-3.8m ... 4.9m final (surprisingly all eviction interviews 3-4m officially)
Saturday- 2m-2.9m
Sunday- 2.7m-3.6m
So if each day this week they can get in the lower end of each daily range then it isn't quite as over as we think ... theres a lot of time to improve (and it can) and the live feed will probably be back as well

TBH I think C4 might have been waiting to see what last nights figures held before committing themselves to the agreement they'd made "IN PRINCIPLE" with Endemol via the meeting.
If this is the case, then it actually looks like this could be good news for us BB Fans.

I heard about that too, appatrently about 1 million viewers were lost because of that
Its laughable at the excuses made, its always something to do with competition. The thing is there was NO competition last night, even if there was, the competition in BB1-BB7 would have been scared of BB.
Rememebr Soccor Aid during BB7, it was getting about 4.8m nightly while BB was getting 5m+. Just imagine if that was on now. I would dread to think

Exactly, also the officials pushed that rating to 3.8m i think (500,000 up) so if the same happens to last night, then the official from last night will be about 2.5m.

Evidently, you do lose 40% of viewers, and its a lot more than that.
Unlike us, the public can take or leave shows once they've seen the first day or so. We all get quite attached to BB, hence we're here but in reality the average viewer couldn't give a ****** and if there is something better on or something better or more interesting to do (even if its just Facebook) then they're going to do that.
Clearly something is wrong with BB10. If I've worked it out right they've lost 62% of their audience so far. we're not even a week in and theres still another 13 and a half weeks to go. So its clear live feed does have an impact on it, I'm not even going to bother defending it anymore. I thought maybe CBB was just because its boring (my glass is always half full which is the real cause for all the arguments :eureka:) but BB10 has had the best opening since series 7 I think so its nothing to do with it being boring.
All I'm saying is never under estimate what 10,000-100,000 people watch. They were right all along and its Channel 4's fault they don't have 3m viewers anymore. Its sad to think that just 3 years ago this was the most talked about show on TV and the highlights shows were more watched than this years launch.
E4 only next year methinks.

Last night was the first time I was going to judge the ratings and based on that the series is really flopping which is ashame because last nights highlights were very good and rivaled some of the episodes of the best series
I really don't know what can be done to turn it around, even the live feed coming back wont make a huge difference. Someone needs to come up with a good idea otherwise this series could be averaging in the 1millions

They need a huge twist and need to advertise it well like fake week. And not just some new housemates with a HND variation. Use a mass eviction of some sort, even if they have to fix it for who goes. Or maybe even if they have to, recycle the bedsit when someone like Sophia is up; say its celebrating 10 years of BB or something.

Yeah I agree, some big twist need to be done, I like the idea of the bedsit celebrating 10years of Big Brother
If something big is to happen it needs to be done very soon so it can still grab potential viewers because if its left too long then viewers wont want to tune in on week 3 or 4.

I agree that it might not make a "huge" difference but it's pretty evident that the reason the viewing figures have dropped so low this series isn't just because of 'tired storytyping by Endemol' because they've been spot on the ball this series. It's because of CH4 and the Live Feed
I don't care what anybody says sorry (I mean in the sense of calling me out on this, not for their opinion. I always respect that).
The Live Feed is what gives BB that ultimate push in the 'outside mainstream' world where people who wouldn't normally rush around to watch it check the paper on the train/bus home or see headlines on a website and think "Hmm I might tune into that tonight then and give it a go"
There has been NONE of that this year BECAUSE there is no LF, because no-one like us lot are discussing things those not usually in the know (or obssessive about BB lol) are discussing... Newspapers have barely anything to talk about like they have previous years either!
I know I'm flogging a dead horse here and reiterating what others have said, but that's because it's true...

Say with no live feed it hits a steady level of about 1.5m. That is now the hardcore fan base who will watch no matter what. They love the show that much most of them will follow the show onto another channel. By next summer we'll be half way through digital switch over so everyone should have E4. A normal BB on E4 would probably rate similarly to Hijack and if it got 1m that would be seem as a big success.
Maybe what BB needs is to move to a digital channel so it can become a cult show out of the media spot light and without the comparisons to ratings of previous years.
I think its quite sad we're now discussing if it can break 2m, when even last year at the lowest rated ever it was rare for it not to break 3m on a weekday. It also feels that all the work restoring the BB brand during 2008 (listening to fans) was all for nothing.

Hello everyone - new here and wanted to give my take on the story of the hour, which is Big Brother's ever dropping ratings.
My take is that it's a mixture of things. People have probably seen enough by now, we can all see a bit of previous housemates in the current ones. (Well, i can anyway.)
Also, it seems to me that this year, for some unknown reason they have gone out their way to make the show a bit bizarre, what on earth is with this "Dogface" stuff...it's hardly accessible viewing is it...
Nevertheless, as a big fan, i do intend to keep watching until the death knell sounds......

Tbf though 1.9million viewers is still a hit, by Channel4s standards. I mean no, it's not getting the 6/7 million it has done but it's still a success for Channel 4. If it continues like this, or at least hits over 2mill (which it may) I think it'll continue on C4, obviously a lot cheaper and stuff, and probably cutting BBLB and BBBM. The series can be seen as a failure by Big Brothers standards (again bearing in mind it is only Day what 5?), but by Channel 4s standards, I wouldn't say it's in immediate danger.

Don't kid yourself, 1.9 is rubbish for the slot. C4 want 3mil so they'd be better off importing a series or two. BB will not be back on C4 with these figures, they'll just shove the next one on E4 if there is one because I'd be amazed if Endemol and C4 didn't part ways off the back of this series.
It really is game over for BB unless something drastic happens and soon.

I hate to say it but BB has collapsed. Only a few years ago, BB was averaging around five million viewers per series. Now, BB10 is likely to only average out at around two million, a 60% drop on the figures of BB5-BB7.
Next year there will be no BB on Channel 4. If anything, it will be moved over to E4 and it might only get a million viewers on average during the summer. Either that, or there won't be one at all.
Nothing can redeem the show now, too many people have given up on it.

At 1.9m they can take it or leave it because thats about what everything gets on C4 and a lot of stuff they show is cheaper than BB ... and BB is very cheap anyway.
2.2m .... hopefully a sign of things to come. Not great, but better. Now the series has got going and tonight is nominations then it should grow a bit, maybe the eviction will just scrape past 3m.
I think its just a case of getting used to the 'new' Big Brother.

Tonight will be less than last night.
It's partially up against an England World Cup qualifier for about 15mins.

The 9pm eviction show could get 3m as i know many people who just watch BB on the evictions, but the interview 10:35pm show will not, it will probably beow 2m because it normally finished very early than its supposed. Even in BB9 the interviews were getting 2.3-2.8m even though the 9pm show was getting 3.5m+.

On the positive side its an increase and hopefully it could set the trend
On the negative side its just still not good enough and something needs to be done in the next week to turn the series around why viewers can still be persuaded to watch the series as its only just started
Live feed wont make a major difference now, there needs to be something huge to happen otherwise this series is going to fail

Another positive is that i just saw 2 weeks ago's BARB ratings for C4 and by looking at the 2.2m from last night that woud easily place in the Top 7 of the 30 programmes of the week for C4. And BARB has the officials, so the 2,2m could turn into about 2.7m and that would be in the Top 4 of the week.
However Embarassing Bodies got over 3m 2 weeks ago, is it still on? will it give BB a boost? Never thought i would think that Embarassing bodies will give BB a boost

There seems to be some positivity around the series from people are giving it a go so hopefully tonight the word of mouth will help increase the ratings and the show also has a strong lead
Also its nominations tonight, so if they advertise it well and don't announce the results on BBLB today then I can see tonight doing around 2.5million

Well they don't attract the same audience anyway and it shouldn't effect the BB ratings average too much because it will be over before the first ad break of BB
Its only a qualifier though, they only usually do okish

2.2mil is still better than Monday, still not really any good but it's better than I expected at least.

It will have some effect because the last qualifier peaked at 9 million near the end. And they do have a similar young male audience.
We'll see tomorrow... I bet it'll be lower than 2.2m

For an England football match, yes.
When its the actual world cup it gets about double that

Of course it gets more in a World Cup match.
But nearly 8 million viewers is still good generally, and will effect other channels' ratings.
You should have elaborated in your previous post if you were just comparing it to the World Cup finals matches.
All I'm saying is people aren't too fussed yet except the hardcore footie fans (which there are a lot of) so even though a lot will watch it won't feel like everyone is watching if that makes sense? Plus because its only a qualifier it will be made up mainly of men, and BB mainly of women so ... it will impact but not a lot. It'll probably get a similar figure to last night again, I think its found its level now.

Last night's viewing figure was once again record breaking - lowest ever for a Tuesday, against no significant competition, despite it being a (comparatively) decent show.

yes it was a decent show, actually it was a very good show, just a shame that C4 cant see that LF being axed is disruspting the newspapers putting news stories on their papers, meaning less people are knowing about the news on the newspapers= Bad ratings.
And i do believe that it will be sub 2m tonight because i do think that mainly men are watching this series, what ahve teh girls got? nothing, thats why they need good looking guys. And the match is going to take away quite a lot from BB, if it doesnt then i will be shocked.
The newspapers aren't short of stories though, The Sun and Daily Star are the main two and they're still printing as much about BB as ever ... as is Heatworld
I think the problem is a combination of the staggered start, no typically fit men, boring/'seen it all before' launch, BB having its day as a main stream show (cult is the future if its to continue) and going hand in hand with cult is live streaming ...
Best thing that could happen is for BB to either drop down to E4 or go to somewhere like Sky where most of the loyal fans will follow ... it would be getting about half its ratings now and being seen as a success, it would be out of the spot light (moreso on E4, Sky1 is seen as a mainstream channel oddly enough) and no comparisons to what it used to get.
It just needs a fresh start.

What utter rubbish.
The Sun used to have pages and pages of Big Brother stuff before in a special section. Recently I've seen it downgraded to 2 pages.
The Times used to write blogs about the show every single day, even during BB9. Now there's been no blog since launch night.
The Daily Star had nomination results as the main headline on their front page last year. Now it's a little section of the left of their front page.
It's nowhere near getting the publicity it has been in the past, even compared to last year.
Heat Magazine is down as well for sure. It's done very few updates compared to before. I remember very clearly that Heat used to do so many updates about BB - they were the first magazine to really capitalise on BB. Even during BB8 and BB9 they did their fair amount of news updates. But BB10 has been poor in comparison.

Deffenatly, news papers are a big part of the ratings!
I remember in BB9 when I was on Hoilday in Spain they sold the Daily Star over there and It always Had BB On its front page and I relied so much on it to give me the news of what was happening, if it wasnt for that I wouldnt of known luke was evicted...
But now all the newspapers cant be arsed writing about BB10 Why?

The night before got over 2 million also, though it did rise slightly.
Question is, will this rise continue till it reaches acceptable ratings? Or are we just seeing the usual trend of week days doing better than weekends?

It's pretty obvious is my mind that BB only did better because of the better lead in from Embarrasing Bodies.
In fact, with a lead in of 3.5 million, it should have done better.
The rise isn't particularly because people are spreading good work about this series.

Some people who watched launch then switched off might have watched last night and liked it, whereas on Thursday they might have thought it was going to be rubbish so it could cling on to some of them viewers esp as last night was quite a good show.
But it was undoubtedly because of the lead in. But I do think that this year will buck a ratings trend the first week will be the least watched; it will settle in the high 2m range I reckon a bit similar to CBB.

Surely the last part of an 8 million strong football match on ITV would have cancelled out a lot of any extra viewers gained from the strong lead in?

Not really. If Embarrasing Bodies can get 3.5m against the bulk of the England match, BB should have rated better than 2.4m in my opinion. [/quote]
It's very unusual for BB to be the 2nd most watched programme of the day by less than 1.1m.

Not necessarily.
BB got over 5 million for the launch, so obviously there is still an attraction there. EB usually gets 2.5-3.5m.
But the launch must have put a lot of viewers off, looking at the decline.
People gave the show a chance, but were disappointed.

I'm not in the slightest surprised, the crowd was tiny and sounded more bored than the most casual of viewers.

Im very glad its increasing, an increase tonight would prove that the series is a "grower" just like BB1(from tiny ratings to big ratings)
You can look at the ratings in 2 ways:
Positive- It was up aggainst the footbal for 20 minutes which got an average of 8.9m and a peak of 9.8m... even though the match finished at 10:05pm but the xtra 15 mins was still watch by millions of people.
Negative- Embarassing Bodies helped it because it got 3.4m.
