It's possible that some of the weight you've gained is muscle not fat, which weighs heavier.
Diet is more important than exercise however. You can eat all the **** you want, exercise and still be fat. But if you start eating healthily and don't exercise, you will lose weight. People will say be aware of your calories - from my experience that doesn't matter. You could eat 2,000 calories of salad and not gain weight, but if you eat 800 calories of cakes/cookies etc, you will. It's all about the fat content. Choose foods with low fat in them. Definitely try to limit your portion sizes as well, do not overeat. When you're full then stop.
Another good way of losing weight is intermittent fasting. Look it up for all the specific details, but the basis of it is that you give yourself an 'eating timeframe' eg. 8hrs a day and for the rest of the hours you fast. Within that timeframe you should eat 2 sized average meals, but choose healthy foods obviously. After about 12hrs that you stop eating your body begins to burn fat, helping you to lose weight.
Try either of these methods depending on what suits you.
