I was christened as a child though and never 'renounced' or anything, not sure if you are meant to.

My baby will be christened too (gav wants it done as his other 3 are christened), but I want as little to do with it as possible. Obviously I will need to be there, but thats as far as it goes for me, gav can arrange it all and that.

Well if you don't believe in it in the first place then renouncing shouldn't be necessary imo

I was brought up a Catholic but don't consider myself to be one now, I suppose if I was to consider myself anything it would be agnostic

I was raised a Catholic but as I grew older I've become more and more disenchanted with the Church to the point where I now refuse to be a part of it.

I like to consider myself a Christian, but I have this massive doubt as to whether there is a God and although I try to tell myself I believe in it, deep down I don't think I do.

No.

I find the majority of religion in general offensive and I don't see the merit in adopting a PC approach to it and telling people that they're obliged to respect it because they fit into someone's beliefs.

So you're not really a Christian at all then are you?

Well it's sort of like I'm halfway in, halfway out. I tell myself God exists but another part of me nags away, pointing out how preposterous it seems. But then I don't really want to accept that because atheism is such a bleak thing.

It's not bleak at all!! I believe if you live your life with good morals and happiness and live in your heart, you don't need religion. What's so bleak about that?

Because it means accepting that death is the end and that there truly is nothing after you die. That thought utterly terrifies me. I don't really want to accept that.

And if the idea that there's nothing after death isn't bleak, then I don't know what is.

The belief of being nothing when it's all over. That bleakness perhaps. It's one of the reasons I hold Final Fantasy VII in high regard, because of the idea of the lifeforce and being simply transformed back into the energy that drives it all. Not so bleak.

There's no way of knowing for sure either way so I waste no time thinking about it.

I think there must be some truth to it. Otherwise how do we explain the universe? Where does it come from ?

Evolution, perhaps? I'm all for there being a possibility that there's some force out there but until I see any real proof for a religious system in general then I'll remain an agnostic.

But I see what you're saying. The idea of evolution is indeed very plain but there's still solid evidence to support it and even if it doesn't sound very err ... intriguing ... I have no reason to doubt it.

I'm very open minded about these things. I think science can't explain everything.

Fair enough and there's a possibility that there's someone there but that doesn't extend to all those horrible religions with outright wicked attitudes to gays and women.
