The housemates, audience, and the Bit On The Side guests - can all get away with calling Dexter 'Mr Chow' - yet Big Brother felt it was necessary to give Jemima a warning over not wanting to sleep with a black man?
Makes sense. x

Well calling someone Mr Chow isn't racist. If someone referred me to someone of the same ethnicity I wouldn't think anything of it. There's a resemblance though...
Also, I don't think Jemima should have got a warning but she also said Gina probably wouldn't go out with a white person. Gina has never said anything to imply that so she's saying as Gina is black she wouldn't date a white person. It could be deemed racist.

This isn't the first time someone on BOTS has made comments like that, and it certainly won't be the last obviously. Jamie has definitely made comments way worse then a Mr. Chow comparison. I personally see nothing wrong with it, they don't generally cross the line of what's acceptable, it's not like you'd ever hear them say anything flat out racist or something.
The interesting thing is that it appears BB holds the housemates to a higher standard then they do their own after show hosts though... go figure. Last edited by MatthewS; 19-06-2013 at 07:18 PM. Reason: grammar |

For the last damn time - Jemima wasn't warned for not liking black guys, she was warned for presuming Gina wouldn't date white guys because of her race. I don't think Big Brother gave a damn about who Jemima fancied and didn't fancy, but it's because of the comment she made to Gina about expecting her not to go for white guys (which was an ignorant comment tbh and as a black guy I can see how it can be deemed as racist) which meant that BB HAD to warn her, or else prepare for some complaints from ofcom.

I don't find it offensive - but people could argue that it's prejudice and we're saying Dexter looks the same as all Asians. (A common stereotype that's threw about is that all Asians are identical). I just think it's hilarious how they can give Jemima a warning for not going for Black guys, when they can publicly brand Dexter as 'Mr Chow' - because if anything is going to 'offend some viewers at home' it would certainly be that.

I've seen worse acts, not necessarily about race, which I deem more offensive... someone being called the C word for instance. I think after what happened with Jade all them years ago, they wanted to move fast just in case but instead moved abit too fast. No harm though, we all saw it for what it was. A bit of ignorance from both sides. |

No one said that, though.

BUT, I'm saying more people (certainly of an asian background) would find them branding Dexter as 'Mr Chow' just because he's Chinese - offensive, than the amount of people who would care about what Jemima said. Jemima made a comment based on her personal preference, and no one seen it as anything big - I have black friends who didn't even care about it. Big Brother however, made it into a big deal because they were afraid of it 'upsetting' the wankers over at Ofcom - when tbh, throwing nicknames like Mr Chow around at Dexter - is far more upsetting to some viewers.

The world has gone mad but as I said before, it's about context and interpretation. What might be OK for you, might not be for another.

if someone actsor looks like someone famous you call them by it. i,e mr chow mr bean whatever. in no way could it ever be classed as racist. if there was a black guy in there who acted like prince of bell air and people called him the fresh prince would it be racist lol of course not.

What if their was a white guy who acted like the fresh prince of bell air? Could you get away with calling him that in the house? Or automatic warning?

What if the person being called it didn't know of Mr Chow from the movies? Context changes.
I agree though, the word racist is used very loosely in such circumstances. |

What the hells the matter with you lot. You jump up and down as soon as a small misinterpretation remark is made and everyone turns into a do goody freak and at the same time your own moral codes salivate at the mere thought of one human being beating the sh 1 t out of another verbally or even physically. Are we not dealing in double standards here.

the whole thing started with gina being in a mood and looking for a fight, if it was a casual friendly talk between her and gemima, two gals talking about boys, none of this would of happened, geez what happens if someone really IS racist? cops swarm the house? (jemimas name is sadly ironic though)
