Default Candles at the ready...

'National Grid burst through all but one of its “safety nets” and spent millions of pounds on Wednesday as it sought to prevent power shortages.
The electricity transmission firm was forced to call on a range of tools available to it when power reserves run low.

National Grid spent at least £2.5m after issuing a notice of inadequate system margin (NISM) on Wednesday afternoon asking power companies to provide more electricity. It paid Severn Power about £2,500 per megawatt hour to provide an extra 500MW for two hours.

National Grid also used one of two new powers designed to prevent the risk of power cuts. These have already cost the National Grid £36.5m to put in place – adding 50p to the average annual household energy bill – but incur extra costs when called upon.'

Can't blame the miners this time, and we pay enough for energy already so watts the problem?...

Good for you DR shame more aren't as forward thinking
When I buy this £40,000 prefabricated council box the first thing I'll do is put solar panels on it!

Several power cuts in my area this week. For some, the power has been off for days. I'm assuming it's related to this.

Praying for myself.

I haven't heard anything as of late so I can only assume we're all back to normal. It was all over my Facebook feed though.

Our village had a powercut last night but it's very common here and we always have candles and torches ready.

If you burnt witches in my village for energy the lights would never go out.

Sometimes a power cut can be a good thing. A good few years ago, it was a few weeks before Christmas in Scarborough and we were out for a quietish drink. We were in the 'Hole In The Wall' pub - a smallish intimate place which was quite packed, when the lights suddenly went out.

The power did not come back on so quickly, and the staff quickly dotted the place with oil lanterns and candles which lent real atmosphere to the Christmas decorations.

It was not long before the entire pub were singing one Christmas Carol after another and a kind of 'Blitz' spirit developed. The night ended with everyone in the pub shaking hands with each other/kissing cheeks and hugging.

It still remains a memorable night for me.
