Love Island is beating Big Brother in the ratings most days at the moment. Everyone on social media talks about Love Island but hardly anyone talks about BB. The media are talking about LI all the time.
Why has Love Island become more popular than Big Brother? Is it a better tv show? |

ITV2 clearly had a vision for Love Island doing better things this year and threw loads of money at it and promoted the **** out of it day in, day out and have reaped the rewards with like an extra million viewers year on year. C5 on the other hand blew the budget on a new house which was pathetically closed after a week and barely promoted the series at all and left Rylan to be the figurehead of the show teasing everything for days on end. Put in the promo and people will give it a chance. Produce a good start and people will stick with it. Love Island did both, BB did the latter. Imagine what the figures might've been now had the launch posted a marginally higher number, since the ratings have been consistent most of the series? C5's treatment of the show is a disgrace |

It's a shame because the content of the promo (mainly the trailers) were great, but they just relied on Rylan too much, barely aired the ad on C5 or their sister channels, didn't turn up to a Radio 1 interview, released five house pics on bloody Twitter. It was all pathetic This series was never gonna hit 3m or anything like that but say it had launched to idk 1.7 or something, the officials might look even better than they do now and could've made the difference between shoddy production decisions to chase ratings and whether or not civilian BB has a future |

It´s better produced and better edited show. You get to know people on Love Island in 1 hour much better than in BB nowadays.

It just is what you are expecting... without any real pre-contrived manipulation by the producers.
I am still watching Love Island... but I gave up on BB and their fake plot twists and scripted relationships BB isn't what it was or was meant to be any more... Love Island gives you exactly what you read on the label

Love Island has better promotion.
Love Island has only had 4 series' and Big Brother has had 17. Love Island has more media attention. Love Island is seen by younger people as the new 'in thing' - Big Brother is probably something their mums watched when they were growing up.

BB is over killed and is kind of living on it's last life now, I'm past caring about ratings aslong as the series is enjoyable. The same will happen to LI in a few years, TV shows aren't successful forever

What Sam said is true too. Love Island's audience will be more fickle - it's audience will grow out of it in the next few years as it stops being the 'in thing' whereas Big Brother has more loyal viewers who have watched for years.

Tbh I doubt LI will be around in a few years time.
I honestly think had this years series got the same crap ratings as last year - they wouldn't bother renewing it - but there's more chance now. It may be back for 2017 next year but not sure about 2018-onwards. Last edited by Jason.; 05-07-2016 at 06:23 PM. |

I was bored of Love Island after the first few day last year so turned off but I've been hooked this year, it' a shame it clashes with Big Brother most nights. I always watch it on itv2+1 though if it does clash.
But I agree it definitely has something to do with the promotion, and the fact that it's "new". So far the series average of BB17 is 1.6million whereas LI2 is 1.37million so it's not quite beaten yet. |

I don't think it's just the promotion that has helped LI.
It's actually a really good and enjoyable show (granted I haven't watched in over 2 weeks and have a heck of a lot of catching up to do) but it's still a good show which probably helps in retaining and increasing a lot of its viewership because if it was crap, people would've turned off after the launch and not bothered. This years series has been waaay better than last years imo Last edited by Jason.; 05-07-2016 at 06:25 PM. |

It's simple - ITV2 have invested more into Love Island this year whereas apart from a house extension and some new sets, Channel 5 have cut back on theirs.
I'd also argue that a lot of the people watching Love Island now are the former Big Brother audience who've had enough of putting up with Channel 5's version - I know quite a few people for whom this is the case.
