"The decision has split opinion in the North African kingdom, led by King Mohammed VI, who favours a moderate version of Islam."

This is a positive move and a big step forward from within a Muslim country I think

Yeah, I think this is the only way to successfully combat ISIS and groups like them. That video that caused such an argument on here yesterday, the one where the Muslim lady asks How do you fight an Ideology with weapons? (or words to that effect) I mean she is right in a way, obviously the west has to try and protect itself from attacks etc, but this is the only way to really solve the problem, it has to change from within, evolve a bit

This is very true. One of the biggest problems with established religions is most of them carry ideology from the past from a time when that may have been normal. Today the world is different and these religions need to modernize their views.

There was a time when people thought the world was flat, now we know it is round. It's no different for ridiculous ideas and misogyny. Once people thought it was acceptable for a woman to be the property of her father or husband, today that is not acceptable.

It is and I hope that this is a sign that they are willing to take more moderate Syrians facing death.

To combat this stuff it will take a combination of things. No one thing will work. They need to be taken out militarily and ideologically and from within the religion.Morocco is taking a step in the right direction.Alot of these countries are stuck in their ways so if they see positive change coming in other muslim countries then it can only be a good thing.

Can you explain 'stuck in their ways'? Religion usually means being rather stuck in your ways. What is being addressed is extremism.

I'm not a religious person but I would have a lot of experience with Catholicism and I can't speak for NM but my opinion on it would be, similar to Catholicism religions need to evolve as the world moves forward. Women in most religions at one time were treated like second class citizens because that was how they were treated by society, being "stuck in their ways" to me, would mean some religions still treat their women like second class citizens

It's so nice to hear that as I don't think people address enough the way women are treated in religions. It's like a taboo because they don't want to offend.

Well, I don't have alot of time for religion tbh, I think (not just Muslim) they are oppressive and restrictive and a means of control, having said that I don't think people should be all tarred with the extremist brush either just because I'm not a fan of religions

Meh. I can't say I've ever encountered a woman in a Burkah and felt uncomfortable. People can wear what they want tbh.

Same. The muslim religion just comes up a lot more on the forum in conversations and gets more discussion time because of what's happening in the world atm.

I agree that you could say that not all muslims, catholics, baptists, hindu's etc etc are extremists. However, even moderate folks tend to follow traditions via religion that are extreme in the way that girls and women are expected to dress and behave. Like most ordinary catholics wouldn't be called extremist and then you get stupid rules that they are supposed to follow like no contraception and it puts people in a really difficult position.

It's weird because if the deal that women have in some religions was viewed in a political way or even as race is viewed, we would probably be sanctioning countries/religions rather than doing business with them for the way women are treated. It's not a lot different to apartheid really.

The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins is a really interesting read.

I don't see the point in banning it outside of areas where covering your face is a security risk.

You can't force a change in attitude, women who want to wear the burkha will ironically feel like their own rights to choose what they want to wear is being taken from them. You can't force moderation on people just like you can't force fundamentalism.

The government should have tried to shephard in a more gentle period change, if the country is as split as it's made out to be over the issue then a ban will only cause trouble for them.

The point is though does she really want to wear it or is it forced indoctrination from the men in her family?

Well, you will never know enough to say for certain to ban it completely. What about the people who choose to?

The Muslims I've grown up with haven't felt pressured to cover their head at any stage. Most haven't even put a headscarf on yet until their late 20s or so if that. Everyone is different.

I would have thought that they had evolved though, the recent spike in extremism is due to a regression, you also have to remember we gave Women the vote less than 100yrs ago, let's not expect miracles
