Default The performative ‘claps’

Please listen to this. This women who has gone viral on twitter, sums it up.

The first nationwide clap was nice, a bit of gratitude, it was also just created by a member of the public with no relation to the government however after the government took hold of it hijacked it and made it a repetitive one week event. A brilliant distraction to cover up the horrendous lack of funding, the very late arrival of PPE, even when arrived it came faulty and still no vote on pay rise. The fact just speak for themselves 179 british armed forces died from the iraq war since 2003. While since March 182 frontline health workers have died from COVID... also Britain health care death toll is one of the worst affected in Europe.

It’s purely for show, it did start off as a nice gesture but it quickly spiralled into a vanity project to make the public feel better about themselves imo and the governments role in it is completely disingenuous, hoping that if they’re spotted out clapping once in a while people will forget the absolute carnage they’ve created over the past 10 years for the NHS, the public are crying out for the NHS staff to be treated better than they are, the majority of people think the staff deserve a raise, even before the pandemic, but apparently they’re only work a clap for a minute each week, it’s utter nonsense and they shouldn’t be allowed to get away with it

I think when it was organically done by the public the intention was good and the thought was nice, but it always seemed like a slap in the face when people who voted for the party responsible for the NHS decimation over the past decade were doing it, like they were helping, it quickly became very false and a competition between houses who could look better

Spot on all through.

Let's see some real recognition for those who have entered into danger, with no protection equipment.

Put money where it should be to give these people proper recognition for efforts over and above the call of their duty.

Never again to be treated like near irrelevant and scrimping to save pittances by limiting wage rises to them, or even cutting their numbers.

The Country has hopefully seen how things can change and these excellent staff needed to care for and save lives.
They've seen those care staff lose their lives too by lack of available and right protection equipment.

A massive amount more than just lip service and clapping is required now.

Pretty much, I've said as much from the beginning, it was a meaningless gesture that the public did to make themselves look good on facebook while not doing anything to alleviate the problems that NHS faced. I know so many people that put on a show every thursday night but then broke lockdown at every possibility.

Clapping is pointless when you've voted to keep a government that is systematically destroying the NHS.

I saw someone say that wouldn't it be a great idea to all clap our MP's next year rather than give them an increase

Sadly for Johnson.
No matter how they script him.

He still at times cannot hide his real thinking.

His comment, brings to mind, the tale of Nero fiddling while Rome burned.

He will look to shift blame to anyone but him and his government.
This comment, I could believe was deliberately made to test the water now as to blame levelling elsewhere.

This is possibly where his advisor/s are trying to go with this.

As to Hancock, not committing to raising wages of those in Care work.
That's no surprise.

How this master of deceit remains a Minister, never mind Health minister.
Should be beyond the understanding of all of decent thinking across the UK.

I think that's quite unfair. Initially I believe people were in a state of shock at what was happening in the country, normal life had stopped and people were feeling lost and vulnerable and believed that the clap was their small way of showing gratitude. I agree it was hijacked and almost commercialised like everything is in this country and stopped being about anything other than Boris having an opportunity to stand and be filmed on the steps of Number 10.

Yes but it was a small, meaningless token that was largely to alleviate those feelings of being lost, vulnerable and helpless. People mostly did it for their own peace of mind. When NHS workers commented that it was more like a slap in the face - that the GBP has been silently watching the government underfund and dismantle the NHS for years. That real appreciation could be shown by actually expecting the government to improve conditions and pay for NHS staff... no one was really interested. They just kept on clapping. Nothing will improve for NHS workers and those people will continue to vote the same.

I actually agree other keyworkers, usually the ones the government considered unskilled or only worthy of low pay.
Should have had acknowledgement for their continued efforts.
Like shopworkers for instance.
Delivery drivers.
Public transport workers.

The vital people needed to keep things going as safe and as best they could be.

A whole new rhetoric is needed towards all those key workers and not the usual dismissal of or looking down on their worth.

Absolutely, I'd agree with that.

Am I expecting the right response and recognition of them and the NHS and other Care staff too, from this government.

Not likely am I.
How I'd love to be proven wrong however I doubt I will.

There'll be lots of selective and guarded lip service of appreciation to them, I doubt much of anything else long term however.

Speaking as someone who worked through the lockdown, I wouldn't want people clapping for me, I wanted them to actually adhere to the lockdown and not be vile to the people I worked with to such an extent that they were breaking down in the warehouse.

**** clapping, if you can't provide aid then just do your part in preventing the spread and don't treat people like **** who are risking their lives and families to make sure your day is as normal as possible.

I love how she describes it as "brain dead seals" , I've always found the whole thing contrived , hypocritical and all for show .

NHS needs proper support not just clapping . Boris never takes responsibility and he enjoys shifting the blame.

I find this so disgraceful tbh. No compassion whatsoever from the government, the NHS deserve a lot more than free parking in my opinion but yet this is now being taken away from them? Disgusting.

Because it's an exercise in vanity that doesn't benefit anyone, least of all the NHS staff. It's just people trying to outdo their neighbours and chase clout on the socials.
