MAXIM magazine has sparked outrage after it controversially declared ex-jailbird Amanda Knox one of 2012’s most beautiful women.

Knox, 24 was sentenced to 26 years for murdering British student Meredith Kercher in Italy in November 2007 before being acquitted last October.

But the American was voted into Maxim's 'Hot 100' and ranked 92 on the list.

A caption under Knox’s face in the mag read: “Foxy Knoxy's murder rap was overturned after she spent four years in a hardcore Italian prison."

Referring to the Italian restaurant chain, it added: “We're guessing she hasn't hit the Olive Garden since coming back.”

But readers hit out on Twitter at the controversial decision, with one dismissing it as “a joke".

Ryan McElroy posted: “I'm sorry, is Amanda Knox really on the Maxim Hot 100? Please tell me this is a joke.”

Another Demi's Wifey wrote: “You have a really distorted view of what ‘sexy’ is.”

Meanwhile, Michelle Stephens tweeted: “Amanda Knox made Maxim's hot 100 this year? So if I'm accused of murder, will that help boost my rating among the clearly disturbed readers?”

Israeli model and Lenoardo DiCaprio’s ex-girlfriend Bar Rafaeli topped the list, which was compiled for the first time by votes from the magazine’s readers.

She was followed by TV presenter Olivia Munn, actress Mila Kunis, singer Katy Perry and actress Olivia Wilde.

Rounding out the top 10 were Jennifer Lawrence, Emma Stone, Megan Fox, Malin Akerman and Adrianne Palicki.

On its website, American mag Maxim wrote: "As we're reminded every four years, democracy is the cornerstone upon which our great land is built.

"That's why this year, for the first time in Hot 100 history, we let you, the readers of Maxim, weigh in on who should comprise the definitive list of the world's most beautiful women.

"From movie stars to murder suspects to a cartoon, here are the sexy results. God bless America!"

Model and Transformers star Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Underworld actress Kate Beckinsale made 11 and 12.

Pippa Middleton also made the list and was ranked at 81, well behind fellow Brit and Harry Potter star Emma Watson ranked 21.

Comedian Stephen Colbert was ranked at 69, becoming the first man to make the list, while Family Guy cartoon character Lois Griffin was voted the 85th hottest woman.

umm, no actually i think you'll find plenty of people in police stations especially when you've been there for over 14 hours for no reason, you do whatever you can to pass the time.

In fact if anything, doing cartwheels shows she probably isn't guilty, if you just killed someone and you got caught, certainly you would be too worried and scared to do cartwheels, you'd be thihking you would be spending the rest of your life in jail.

Obviously being that relaxed shows she thought the whole thing was going away, because certainly they can't keep an innocent person in jail. She was naive enuf to believe in the Italian justice system. Stupid her. If she was guilty she would be brooding in a corner thinking of excuses.

No rational person would do cartwheels in a foriegn jail after being accused of a brutal murder....There is no way on earth you could convince me that they were the actions of a sane person in full possession of all their faculties....
