Default Anyone had a burger for dinner today?

Some beef burgers sold in supermarkets are said to contain DNA from horses.

According to BBC News, retailers affected in the UK and Ireland include Tesco, Lidl, Aldi, Iceland and Dunnes Stores.

Irish food safety authority FSAI came upon the results after 27 products were analysed. A beef burger sample from Tesco contained 29% horsemeat.

An FSAI spokesperson stated that the meat is perfectly safe to consume.

However, he added: "There is no clear explanation at this time for the presence of horse DNA in products emanating from meat plants that do not use horsemeat in their production process.

"In Ireland, it is not our culture to eat horsemeat and therefore, we do not expect to find it in a burger."

A number of samples also contained pig DNA.

Affected supermarkets have removed the burgers from store shelves.

Hope you enjoyed them.

Just posted that on facebook earlier, it's seriously disturbing, they also found pig DNA in the burgers which is unfortunate for many people who don't eat pork either.

Yeah I was listening to this, they think that the majority of the meat is beef but then the companies buy in stuff to bind the burgers together from abroad and that's when the horsemeat came in :/

Never assume anything niamh, why did they even attempt it then, and risk an expose?
Really hope they are all dragged all the way to court over this!
Money is scarce, them pumping food full of foreign offal to further inflate their profit is disgusting.

hhhmmm, well, I'm not sure how it was covered over there, but the Minister for Agriculture, Food & Marine was on the news here and they're investigating it so I presume it must be illegal otherwise why would they be doing it?

It's disgraceful that the companies here and in the UK either aren't testing what they're buying in or don't care.

I would imagine the list of ingredients would not match with what was actually contained in the burgers, so they would be therefore not comply with trading standards guidelines. A small tolerance only would be allowed percentage wise presumably. Otherwise the said stores would not be removing the offending items.
