Default Do you believe in "soulmates"?

What is a soulmate, and how do you know when you've found them?

I think soulmates exist. I think there's someone for everyone; someone you share a lot of things in common with and you get that "glow" around them. However, sometimes you can go through life and never find them, which is quite sad.

I think there are multiple soulmates but only a few, so you're lucky if you meet one.

The term "soulmate" derives from Christianity, and I want to talk about how true this term really is.

Here's an interesting article I found on the original meaning of Soulmates, I thought it was very interesting:

They invented the concept of heaven as a tool of social control but not souls or soul mates.

Not true.Souls were in religions long before Christianity. The ancient Egyptians for instance had the 'Ka' which was essentially the same as the soul.

It depends what you mean when you say "soulmate" I don't believe that there's only one person in the world for everyone. I also don't believe we have souls. I think I would find it hard to meet someone who I'm more compatable with then Gav though

I believe in them, but I think they are very very rare.

I'll use my aunt as an example. She was in a horrible relationship and was pregnant with twins and lost them. She was so depressed about it for the longest time. Soon she left that relationship and met her latest partner. He didn't have the best health, but he had 3 young sons who thought the world of her. They were totally the opposite, but they worked so well. Anyway, later on he got really sick and needed a kidney transplant and the waiting list was really long. My aunt the asks the hospital to check if she was a match and she was!

So he got better but then he died like 7 years later. It was horrible, she said that when he died, she saw his soul leave his body. I wouldn't believe anyone else apart from her.

One thing that made me think 'okay wow' was when I was on the phone to her last month. it was the 5th anniversary of his death and I was talking to her about him, and she stopped talking and was like 'Oh my god, wow...' and I was like omg what's happened?? and then she told me that the clock where his ashes are kept (he collected clocks, had like over 100 around the house) had opened up and the little door where his ashes were kept was wide open. She said that it's only ever happened twice since he's passed and the other time was when his sons were at the house.

But yeah, I think finding a soulmate is very rare and very few of us are lucky enough to do so

I believe that everyone has multiple soul-mates, though most of us are only lucky enough to actually meet and get to know a few of them. I also don't believe that a soul-mate necessarily has to be a romantic connection, they might even be the same gender (with no degree of homosexuality) "JD & Turk" style.

Oh also I dont think a soulmate has to be someone you're in love with. I think it can be a sister/brother/aunt/friend/whatever.

I need someone to actually define what they mean by soulmate though, I mean as I don't actually believe people have souls, I cant say I believe in soul mates but if people just mean someone who they are extremely compatable with then yeah sure I believe in that

Well obvz I don't believe in the literal soul either. I define it as someone who is just perfectly "on your wavelength". Someone who gets your humour, things that make you mad, other "little quirks" - even if they're obscure, and even if you've only just met them - because the way they think is just "in sync" with the way you think. I guess someone who you would happily share any and every opinion with without fear of it being controversial, because you already know before even saying it that that person is going to be thinking the same sort of thing...

Like you and me Niamh. We're little Tibby soulmates .

I think that's the thing, really. There are several different meanings published by many different sources. But I think that you know when you have found them. You get that glow, that butterfly feeling that never goes away, like the elastic band that binds you together is shortening the closer that you get.

I know this is pretty spiritual **** but I do believe in the whole elastic band theory, which is why long distance relationships never work and you get that gutting feeling when you haven't seen them in a long time - as if the elastic band is breaking.
