I'm genuinely traumatised by a certain horror film I saw when I was a teenager.

I've avoided it ever since. I avoid pictures from it, trailers for it, even the music used in it.

Should I re-watch it now to cure my fear?

I would advise you do...since whilst it's a fairly insignificant fear, it's still a bit of a problem.

I'm similar Linda, I remember watching American Werewolf in London was I was very little and I've avoided it ever since. Other horror films I don't blink at but I always avoid that one.

Me too that film terrified me, even when I read your post I felt goosebumps just reading the title - how crazy is that

I completely understand that! My fear is as ridiculous and crazy as that. I fear the name of it being spoken, I fear the picture of the DVD box... I fear absolutely everything about it.

It's a really stupid situation. I'm 36 years old. I shouldn't be scared of a movie.

my theory is there is something about the film that evokes a subconscious memory that was very unpleasant. It could be a tiny scene but could bring back a fearful emotion to the mind. Well thats my theory - for me I could never watch it again but that just me.

Shaun knows what film it is. I'm not saying it here, because I know some people from here would find it hilarious to randomly send me pics from it.

Suffice to say it's an oldie.. 70s I think. I saw it late 80s and it was already an oldie by then.

I was scared of 'IT' when I was younger, it's what gave me a phobia of clowns.

oh yeah IT was really scary, clowns in general are pretty creepy though

Yeah, I have. It's been over 20 years since I saw it, and I've avoided it since. It's easy enough to avoid.

I'm just annoyed with myself for having this fear. I dislike not being in control, so phobias irk me, and I want to get over it, but it's not that simple.. obviously.. or else nobody would have phobias lol..

I was around 15 or 16, and went to the cinema with a couple of friends to see the late night screening of it. It was one of those 'shock fest' type things, where they showed a load of old movies. It's the only horror I've seen on the big screen, so I dunno if it was my age, or the fact that it was in the cinema, but it's really affected me.

The reason I brought it up this evening was because I was reading someone's tumblr blog and scrolling down through funny pics and one of them contained a still from this film and my heart sped up and I immediately scrolled down past it. Then I realised how ridiculous this is, and wondered how I can cure it.

I spent the first 23 years of my life being utterly terrified from spiders, until the day there was one in my baby's crib and I had no choice but to pick it up and put it out. Now I can let them crawl on me.. I actually like them now.. they fascinate me.

So I know the 'face your fear' thing does work with certain fears, but I'm worried that if I re-watch this movie, I'll heighten the fear instead of curing it.

seeing it in the cinema could be a big factor actually, I remember seeing the Grudge in the cinema and being terrified, then I saw it at home and I wondered why I was so scared first time round

I'm kind of the same with Horror films. Especially at night and when I want to sleep, the only things I think about are things that scare me.

Just avoid it. it will slowly fade away again, well that's the affect it has on me anyway

We went home that night, and I begged my friend to sleepover at my house. I was so scared. She grabbed her stuff and left a note for her mum, and came with me. I didn't get to sleep for hours..
