I've always wondered this.
You know when you're playing a game like, Grand Theft Auto 4 for example.

Quite a big map.

But you can't be in the same place at the same time, obviously.
So let's say we were in Algonquin in Liberty City,

Spoiler:

Would cars still be moving, would people still be moving, would there still be 'life' over on the other side of the map, in say Bohan?

I mean, I've always wondered this.

If I were to be in a helicopter flying over Happiness Island

Would the underground trains still be going? Would things still be served in Burger Shot?

Do you get what I mean?
Or does everything literally stop in the game until I arrive in a certain place?

I'm using Grand Theft Auto as a example by the way, I'm sure whatever the answer is it'll apply for all games.

I remember i read somewhere aggggggggggggggggges ago in a magazine it was something about Vice City and appearantly everywhere is frozen until you arrive wherever
I have no idea if it still applies for GTA IV seeing as its on the PS3 and 360

i used to always believe that about life ..ya know im here in my house but theres nothing outside this little box

I'm so glad you said that!

I think the exact same thing, like right now I'm like 'I bet everyone else I know is like not here and just not existing until I see them again'.

I actually told the teacher and class this today and they all said I was smug and up my own arse for thinking the world revolves around me, which is essentially what we are actually saying by believing that but you know

I'm glad I'm not the only person that thinks that now

How annoying is it on GTA one you shout for a Taxi and none of them stop and just drive of into the distance i spend about 10 minutes following it because i can't be bothered looking for another

The only activity occuring on screen is what needs to be. If you are in a helicopter you may see cars down below, but they would be rendered relatively easy - simplistic versions of themselves [after all your not up close enough to notice that the full physics and graphics have not been applied to them] and would only come into greater detail if you flew closer or if something occured [you shoot a rocket down, for instance]. Same goes for standing on a tall building. Nothing is actually going on down below until it needs to be [zoom a sniper rifle down and the game engine will bring pedestrians into existence, for instance].

That's why framerate slows down and cars pop up out of nowhere if you are driving really fast in a car. The game is struggling to keep up and create what's in front of you.

If the game had to run everything all the time your CPU would catch on fire and your Xbox would explode, I'm guessing. It's impossible even on current technology.

Sounds a bit like if a tree fell in the woods and no one was around to hear it, would it make a sound?

But no i imagine everything is frozen.. no one in burger shack it doesnt even have an inside until you get inside yourself.

The interiors don't need to load in GTA IV. If you are standing across the street you can shoot people through the window inside Burger Shack. It's not like the old games.
