..they've had these for a month or so at my branch and they're actually pretty easy to use and very quick as well after the first few times of getting used to the different transactions...and they always have staff to help and explain if anyone needs it...

And what happens during the inevitable "technical difficulty" periods?

I don't like this over reliance on machines.

..even with cashiers, 'machines' are still used though and they do sometimes have problems now if they can't access your account so this really is just the same except the customers are using the machines directly instead of a member of staff....

But surely the members of staff had backup in case it went down and could help you.

I just don't like this shut down on human interaction.

It's scary.

..there are still staff there, it's just that they're standing to one side to help you if you needed it rather than being in front of you type thing.....I wasn't sure the first time I used it either but they are actually pretty cool and easy and the queues seem much shorter now..(all the customers have probably closed their accounts in protest..)...but you feel like a bit of a money launderer just doing everything you need to so quickly and actually you feel a bit more in 'control', I think anyway.....life in the fast lane, Marsh....

I'm sure some staff will lose their jobs and when you break it down the public are now staffing banks and supermarkets (self service tills), yet there is no reduction in food prices or increase in savings rates so more profits as the wage bill is reduced.

Where I work, which is staffed by two people at all times, we were told by a "concerned" Aussie tourist that over in Australia, similar establishments have switched to rows and rows of automated terminals (we already have a few) and that "we should worry, because we'll end up out of a job!"

...like I said, we already have a few, and the problems are endless, from technical faults to user error... people often need help.

With that in mind, "How many staff do they have to troubleshoot problems or help new faces? Y'know... how many people are on hand milling around, to help people to use the machines?"

"Err... usually two... or three" says our concerned Aussie friend.
