The onus isn't on how well travelled the fans are or what sports are played in the US, it's the cultural appropriation of the song.
Is the significance of the song known? I would hope so. It isn't sung with any malice and I can't see them changing, the academics have educated them as to it's history so they aren't ignorant to it's deeper meaning any longer.

When you find out that fat white men halfway across the world have been using a slave spiritual sung by your ancestors and inspired by the Underground Railroad, in preparation to throw an egg-shaped ball about whilst having little to no idea about its significance beyond that, I think you'd be allowed to be slightly peeved about it tbh
