I think that's the only legitimate reason for someone not being able.

I went on holiday to Turkey with a non swimmer who was from London and he wore arm bands.

I can't swim. Went every week in junior school for 4 years, just can't do it. Neither can my sister.

I'm not even afraid of water or anything, just can't grasp swimming.

'Basic skill'

It just depends whether you've learnt to or not. I can't ride a bike because I've never learned...

We've been trying for years to get my eldest swimming but she still can't (she's nearly 9). She suffered perforated eardrum when she was 5 or 6 and for a while after that had problems with ear infections / water getting trapped (which was very painful) if she ever got water in her ears and now basically has a phobia of her ears going under water... she all she can do is a very ineffective doggy paddle with her head bobbing around above the water line. We try constantly but it's become like a reflex, and professional swimming teachers can't get her to stop doing it either .

yes because that is exactly what I am talking about..also the girl who had her legs bitten off in a shark attack when she was 8 - disgraceful that she now is scared stiff of water and cant swim at 18 or the guy in an iron lung 24/7 ...etc etc

I am talking about people with no excuses (or lame ones)

Das racist

Anyway, more importantly, LOOK at your post count when I read this post

You'll need to make over 11,000 more posts before this momentous occasion can be repeated. I'm frankly bowled over. I can't wait until I hit 22,222 and am really upset that I missed 11,111

It's debatable whether being able to swim leads to fewer drownings.

It may be if a person is over-confident in their swimming ability they put themselves in situations where they are more at risk.

how many people have swimmers saved from drowning?

what you are referring to is almost always a young man showing off or trying to be too brave

and they die all over the shop doing that not just in water

it's sensible for a parent to teach their kids to swim, but it's not a life requirement.

Well another one is people thinking that because they can swim in their suit in a pool / in a wetsuit in open water, that they can also easily swim easily in a potential drowning situation. The reality is that fully clothed and wearing shoes (which would be most emergency situations), even competent swimmers can sink like a stone.
