Yup. I do believe they were poor and that her mum never gave her much attention

She either made it up completely, or she saw / heard about something similar happen but it wasn't actually her. It wasn't even just that it was implausible... She's just not a very good liar and it was obvious that she was making up embellishments on the spot.
