The Leader of the House was on LBC as she was asked whether she agreed with the parents
who have removed their children from lessons in school teaching about gay and lesbian relationships.

She said she was pleased that her own children were taught about it, but it was her choice of
words when saying parents should be able to opt out of the classes that raised eyebrows.

Speaking to Nick Ferrari, she said: "I think that it's right that the government should have passed
legislation that requires that relationships and sex education is taught in schools.

"But at the same time, I also agree that it's right that parents should be able to choose the moment
at which their children become exposed to that information.

"And there are steps taken to enable parents to withdraw their children from classes up to a certain age."




Gay MP LLyod Russell-Molye was not happy and had a go at her in the Commons over her words.
Lloyd Russell-Moyle criticised Andrea Leadsom after she said parents should decide when their
children were "exposed" to the lessons.

He also attacked "bigots that don't want LGBT people to be heard in schools".

Some Birmingham schools have stopped LGBT rights classes after protests.

Parkfield Community School, in the city, said it would not resume the lessons until a
resolution had been reached with parents.

In a statement on Wednesday, the school said it was planning to "evolve" its equalities
teaching "in collaboration with parents".




Those who are adamant that homosexuality is morally wrong strongly feel that the Equality Act
should protect their religious beliefs.

However, for the LGBT community, "alarmed" is the word often being used to convey feeling both
here in Birmingham and around the country, and they believe their human rights are being abused
by schools who have stopped teaching children about same sex couples.

And now the row is spreading. In Greater Manchester, the BBC understands hundreds of parents
have sent letters to schools asking for their children to be removed from sex education lessons.

As the dispute escalates, so does the tension around this controversial topic.

the purpose of school education is to gain basic knowledge and understanding of the world so that people can take their place in society. Children can specialise later in their schooling, thats fine, but they should all get the fundamental basics.

It's not for me to define fundamental basics, that's what school boards and authorities are for, but once they have decided, there should be no exclusions from that curriculum.

Surely it's important for them to learn about sex before they become teenagers, as they need to be educated about protection, and the risks. Also, I remember being a kid, and I'm pretty sure I understood what sex was when I was in year 2. Kids are much smarter than you think, children can be know about sex and still have a happy, innocent childhood.

I agree with that, it's up to schools to decide their curriculum and if a parent doesn't like the content, they DO have a choice, as they can choose private education or home schooling.

there's one secular law of the land
equality is a part of it
no discrimination based on sexual orientation
it's the law and they need to obey it

I certainly wouldn’t want my kids growing up in ignorance of the reality and normality of LGBT.
