To be honest, I tend to watch ITV for news. I think the idea of the BBC being politically biased probably has some merit, but it's no more than any of the other channels.
Channel 4 especially is extremely left wing and ITV tends to lean more that way too. I always felt that the BBC was more the other way, and I do get the argument as a public paid service it should be more biased, but then anybody who watches the news and feels like that channel is delivering a message they personally don't agree with is going to see the bias more than others.

Netflix is far better value than the BBC, I'm in my parents house atm but when I was a student I didn't have a license but I did watch iPlayer (there's a loophole around it!) but yeah if you don't watch BBC then there's always catch up when you can legally watch programmes from other channels as well not to mention there's Netflix/nowtv/amazon prime so yeah I definitely think living without a tv license is perfectly doable for me anyway.

besides if you just turned a vpn on and watched bbc shows online I don't see how it would even be possible for them to find out (and probably very unlikely if it was)

All I've actually admitted to doing is watching iplayer in uni halls and student flats without a license which IS legal as long as your parents address has a license and your device isn't connected to the mains. Same goes for live TV.
