I became better at it with time.
I guess playing rugby helped me a lot because when I was younger I had no problem getting into it with others and didn't want to calm things down. But then I have learnt how to diffuse a situation in a team and talk things through. I confused getting heated vs putting your point across by not getting heated.
I'm way more patient now and can find ways to calm a situation down.

Same in my family and friends. I kind of have always been the "big brother" or the one hosting debates or trying to calm things down in a group. Even at work, I'm usually seen as the neutral one, and having a managing position puts that to the test too. Because really some days you just want to either shout at everybody or quit But you need to talk it out and take a deep breath and smooth it over as much as possible to get the best out of a possible bad situation.

And thank God I married someone who also smooths things out too. Makes it ten times easier at home.

Thanks, that's nice to read! Rugby is a very humbling sport and it taught me a lot of life lessons. We didn't just walk around town completely drunk But really in a group sport you need to smooth things over quickly otherwise you're set to fail and people can take things personally.

I was part of the Back row, an eighthman for the most part. Nowadays I don't play as much as I did, so I kind of do a little bit of everything with the boys when we meet up.

Yes I'm good at smoothing things over. Usually with a touch of humour. Both for other people as a go between when they have fallen out and for myself when I've put my mouth in gear before my brain which happens often as I am hot-headed. Xx

I loved it though....to pacify and reassure and to turn the whole situation around gave me a great deal of satisfaction.

Well done them tbh...it was me that dropped them both in the situation they found themselves in at 11am this morning.

But hey, people are people and they dont hide away from situations forced upon them by vindictive horrible people. What they do is pick up the phone and man up.

My earliest memories in life are from the muddy pitches of a rugby field, I remember Jim Millar(dont report that to his twitter please)
Jim was my mini rugby coach and at the age of 7 I would have ran through a brick wall for that man.

I was a centre then, high school moved me to stand off, and then in the later years wing forward for one game in the semi final of the Scottish schools..I had a mare.
