It is most definitely 41 for whoever graduated with a minimum of knowledge in maths.

That is a bit rude to be honest. Yes I agree the answer is 41, but I don’t think BODMAS/BIDMAS is used in everyday life.. people will not have ever have revisited this since they were 14... Equations are never set out like this, hence why they ‘trick’ people.

40 (40x0=0) 40+1=41

this is one sort of tricky task they should include in the mole, here you definitely can mole really well in, and you wouldn't notice it

I'm baffled that anyone over the age of 15 doesn't know that the answer is 41 .

40 + (40 x 0) + 1.

Come on guyz.

Come on guyz.

But there are no brackets in the original equation...so at face value the answer is 1

I said 1 because of the lack of brackets.

I was in the thicko class for maths. I sat next to a guy called Fraser Crow and he had "suck that" tattooed to his chest with an arrow to his nipple. He also used to smoke in music and the teacher was to afraid to stop him. Also in that class was a chap called Broony who died in 5th year from being sick when mortal drunk and he asphyxiated.

I was never taught 'BIDMAS' as far as I remember. Brackets first, yes.

Nothing has changed. By the order of operations, you multiply/divide before you add/subtract. There is no alternative way of doing it, the answer is 41.

Brackets being first is to show when you SHOULD add before you multiply, the multiplication does not have to be in brackets to be done first.

e.g.

40 + 40 x 0 + 1 = 41
(40 + 40) x 0 + 1 = 1
40 + 40 x (0 + 1) = 80

Order of operations and brackets matter for different reasons.

The answer without the brackets being present is, again, 41.

If a calculator or computer programme gives the left-to-right answer (which is 1) It's because its a cheap calculator that hasn't been programmed to do order of operations properly. Full stop. It's not a bloody debate

You’ve still got to do multiplication and division before addition and subtraction brackets or no brackets.

To further clarify - official order of operations with the acronyms has been around since the early 20th century. The basic rule that you multiply before you add and subtract has been around since the conception of basic maths rules going back literally thousands of years.

How are people acting like they weren't taught it in the 70's/80's/90's
