Thank you AnnieK it must have been very hard for them/you and you are so right nobody takes the decision to strike lightly especially at Xmas, i mean who would vote to lose all their pay at this time without bloody good reason?

...I guess it’s become a barely recognisable workplace, Grim...with some of the changes you’ve seen...and this changes designed to stretch the workers more and more in the name of greed and profit...?...so much talk about ‘making Britain great again’...and this is such an example of the stripping away of that greatness...but sadly it’s just become a catchphrase with no meaning...hmmmm, what I find so, so concerning...is how much the unions seem to be losing their voices, when their function has always been to represent the workforce..I was thinking this a few weeks ago with Asda staff being forced to sign new contracts or face job losses...it’s a time for the rich, sadly......and no consolation at all but many people are on your side......

My dad was a postie too but on the sorting office on nights the majority of his career. Really feel for you too grim, try not to get personally invested in the comments here. Only you are aware of it has impacted on your colleagues and you personally. I agree people who are wholly ignorant to the impact the changes have had on the workforce since privatisation can't and don't know how much stress and pressure it creates as you fight to retain the rights you currently have.
It's happening across the UK, retail staff, train drivers, pilots nobody is safe from the vice like grip of share holders squeezing more and more for less and less.
It has to stop.

Everybody's jobs have changed. The more technological we become, the fewer people we need. And with the advent of the email, the postie's job was never going to remain the same, sadly. I have a wonderful postman called Colin. He doesn't just deliver the post, he collects it from elderly people as we're a bit remote. He checks on people to make sure they're okay, especially in very hot or very cold weather and generally looks after the people on his round. He is a super-nice man... posties do more than just deliver letters.

I agree Ammi, the rights and protections we enjoyed from were what made Britain great and set us apart from other countries which still relied on allowing the exploitation of their workforce.
That was a Britain to be proud of, the Britain of venture capitalists rinsing the country and it's people and keeping the money offshore is not.
That catchphrase has no meaning, unless it's meant in the terms of Empire.. and that as history tells us was NOT a time of greatness but great brutality and subjection.
The unions need to find a voice quickly, it's essentially now or never or be permanently muted.

As I thought would be appreciated no two cases or courts are alike.. and these two were poles apart.
There is no comparison, as the govt regularly do when challenged the union can appeal... Nothing wrong with that.

As said the strike was announced before the election was.

Why are you not worried about the kids of the posties who's mums and dads rights at work are being eroded, how will they enjoy Christmas with the anxiety of unsecured employment like the kids of the Asda employees?

But many won't think that.. they won't give flying feck about those kids as long as their ebay parcel arrives and they get good feedback.

Yes the judge actually had the neck to say that the election influenced his decision! Well I'll say it again and sorry folks but the strike ballot was way before the announcement of the General Election so that is not a valid excuse in my book!

Yes my cousin's boy works at the big one in Dunfermline,4 days on 10 hour shifts and loves it. hard work but the time goes quick and he likes his spare time it seems.

I work in recruitment and have heard first hand of some of the horrors from previous staff members (plural), including some junior managers

Although, I'm glad your cousins son enjoys the work.
