The PM is usually the leader of the main party in government, but it doesn't have to be. There is no public democratic method of choosing a PM, so talk of not having a mandate is just not applicable. Thats the way it's always been and it would be exactly the same with proportional representation too

Yes but the whole "mandate" thing is more of a moral type thing. For example, our democracy is such that referendums (such as Brexit) are also technically meaningless and not in any way binding. We vote for our representatives and trust them to make the decisions, is how it's supposed to work. In practice it doesn't really work that way; the public likes to feel like it has more control than that and so, in the same way that it would have been political suicide to not accept the results of the Brexit referendum (they did NOT have to do so), it's not good politics to continue for too long with a presidential-style Prime Minister who wasn't in charge when the party was voted in.

That's the main part of the issue really. Prime Ministers going back to Thatcher, or even Churchill, have had the flavour of a President whilst being "technically" a Prime Minister. Sunak less so than more obvious examples like Boris or Blair to be fair - he's more Littlefinger-style weasley - but still, it is what it is in the modern world. Yes "technically" they're just head of the ruling party but that's not the aesthetics of modern UK politics... The Prime Minister is the de facto head of state in the eyes of the population and crucially in the eyes of other heads of state.
