The two young men were homeless
But the Manager refused their Paid Rooms and stopped them from entering. Clip was on Ch5 News 5PM show [Two homeless men were refused entry to a Manchester Holiday Inn Express despite a paid £200 booking as temperatures plummeted to -6C, with staff citing company policy against accepting rough sleepers] https://www.manchestereveningnews.co...-away-33179421 Last edited by arista; 09-01-2026 at 06:40 PM. |

What I don't get is how one group of people, illegal migrants, are fed, housed, cared for, defended have their legal teams funded by us... and another group, our own homeless, are left to fend for themselves on the streets, supported only by those of us who donate to homeless charities? The government has already told us that the rights of illegals are greater than ours. Where on that scale do the rights of homeless people lay? Pretty low down, I'm guessing. And in this current financial crisis a HUGE number of people are one pay day or less away from living on the street.

And it is not about government policy. A hotel took payment. Then refused entry based on appearance. That is discrimination. I’m glad they could stay somewhere else.

The sad thing with many homeless people is that they will have been given an opportunity and housing via their local council. Councils have an obligation. Sadly some of these homeless people are suffering with alcohol and drug addiction. The council pay these people rent money via UC leaving the individual to pay the landlord. Anyone with a drink or drug problem will spend this money on their addiction and consequently will be thrown out and find themselves homeless. Many abuse the system and the consequence is homelessness.
What these people need is support for their addiction...much of it is self help which many struggle with. The other alternative is putting themselves into a rehabilitation clinic but it costs a fortune so its not really an alternative. These people need better support and help...and this country does not offer that kind of support sadly...they are left to get on with it. |

When I walk through the centre of Chelmsford when I visit my niece, I find it hard to see all the young girls who are living on the street, it's hard to tell I know but they don't all look like junkies, they look like vulnerable young women who need help. When marriages break up and men must leave the marital home, some slip into homelessness because they now have to provide toward two homes, it's gets harder, they slip into debt, they lose their home and consequently their job. So many people are a few pounds away from losing everything. I do understand that alcoholism and drug dependence is a factor in the number of homeless but it's not the whole story and those who aren't dependent on drugs or drink are always lumped in with those who are. Similarly the myth that being homeless is a "life choice".

Every time homelessness is talked about, someone has to drag migrants into it. It’s irrelevant and it completely sidetracks the issue.
Homelessness happens for loads of reasons. Councils failing people. Relationships breaking down. Debt. Losing a job. People just slipping through the gaps. That is bad enough on its own. It doesn’t need to be compared to anything else to matter.

Its appalling that the Councils allow someone to sleep on the streets 'because they are not linked to the area'. |

This is much simpler. Two people paid for a room and were turned away because of how they looked. That’s wrong. Once you start comparing groups, the actual issue gets lost. Basic dignity shouldn’t be up for debate.

Remembering Kerry

I don't like to think of any human being homeless or hungry on the streets, particularly when the weather is extremely cold etc; too.
There's organisations who do help and try to help who I've been involved with too when I can be. Some businesses are a disgrace and hindrance to that, even if it's sometimes just trying to organise a hot drinks or a meal in some so called business establishments There shouldn't be any human beings left homeless or freezing on the streets. It's really bad there is. I really hope some government will develop more heart and reach out and end it. I'll not join the migrants bashing brigade, human beings are human beings, no matter where they're from, we all share this planet together. |

Compassion for immigrants
Is that a joke? You can’t complain about the government showing compassion to other human beings while a very loud section of people shows none at all. Compassion doesn’t really count if it only applies to people you approve of. But none of that even matters, because this story has nothing to do with immigrants. Yet the same people have completely ignored what actually happened and gone straight to “illegals this” and “illegals that”. It’s like muscle memory. The facts are very simple. They paid for a room. The hotel took the money. They were refused because they looked homeless. That’s the story.

Absolutely ridiculous. Also whenever I hear stuff like this it reminds me of how we seemingly eradicated rough sleeping during COVID, but as soon as the threat was over people were turfed back onto the street..

Nothing twisted.
You just don’t like the story when it stays on point. They paid for a room. They were turned away because of how they looked. That’s it. Literally the story. Unless I missed something. By all means share with the group.
