They are the act who are making the headlines, getting everyone talking and building the hype and ratings up. Without them I think the show would be down in both hype and viewers. He's not taking it to far, it's a singing Competition but also the act needs the X Factor. John and Edward has neither if they won it would be a diaster, its meant for singing, you get a 1 million recordining contract at the end, how is J + E meant to live up to Leona and Alex (40 number 1s across the globe)
