Question What is the 1984 Book about?

Me and my Friend were in the Libary today and he was reading this stupid book about Famous People over the years.

So I had a look and it said 'George Orwell' I recongized the name and read the paragraph about him.

It said 'Blah Blah.. George gave people the idea that Big Brother was always watching with his famous book 1984'

I had heard of this book before, but never read it and im thinking of buying it if its to do with Big Brother.

A Few Questions to you all that have read it or know abit about it:

Why is it called 1984?
My Friend Said its Scary, is it really?
Whats it got to do with Big Brother?
Is it very long?
Is it worth getting?

If you know anything else please tell me, Im thinking of getting it soon but I dont want to get it and it being all bollocks that only mentions the name 'Big Brother' 2 Times.

*winces*

It's a novel about the idea of totalitarianism - the main character, Winston, comes into opposition with this dystopian Government [the head of which is called Big Brother]. As a form of extreme socialism, they control the media, pretty much every aspect of society - and use a variety of techniques to destroy democracy, such as 'newspeak' (a new language that has got rid of extreme or emotive language) and torture (one famous scene is the torture of Winston into thinking '2+2=5', even though he knows it isn't.

Oh dear, how do you explain it in a few words? It is an extremely complicated read.

It is about a man in a society where everyone is watched 24/7, the government is led by a leader called 'Big Brother'. Everyone does the same things, and are assigned to do certain jobs, eat at certain times etc.

He tries to fight against big brother and has a sexual relationship with a woman, which is against the laws of big brother. He eventually gets caught because of the cameras being 24/7 and he gets tortured and stuff happens which I won't ruin.

Its a great read, and a very scary read... as this was written way before CCTV existed, and big brother was taken from this book. I have done a lot of work on this novel and some bits are still are a hard read. I am re reading it atm actually.
