No one can say either way since the people who know for certain can't exactly talk. No point in picking a side when there's no proof for either.

Erm, the burden of proof is on those who say it exists. You could say that about unicorns and the Loch Ness monster.

If we're specific he didn't dismiss the notion of a "God".

Just the possibility of life after death.

Oh wow. Another thrilling thread on spirituality that is bound to go in circles. These threads suck because as humans we are in our current state too primitive to grasp all the possible concepts of anything beyond the material realm. You don't nessacerily have to believe in heaven and hell or even a god to believe something exists in or outside or nature and science that has nothing to do with the material realm.

Everyone take some DMT, basically. We are too arrogant and thick for our own good. I do think an intelligence of sorts exists. I'm not sure what it is. No man can tell me.

People who utterly dismiss the concept of anything beyond the material realm are as extreme as those who claim a personal relationship with god.

With Dezzy's point though there is a whole religion and bible; whereas Unicorns and the Loch Ness monster are somewhat different 'possibilities'. They are vastly different from the concept of heaven.

Basically I agree with Stu and Dezzy, just in a less articulate manner.

The existence of mythical creatures and what happens in the hereafter are fairly different examples, the former can be proven to not exist, the same can't be said for the latter.

What proof does Stephen Hawking have for his statement? Saying there isn't an afterlife is exactly the same as saying there is. It's all opinion at the end of the day since there's no physical way to disprove or prove the existence of an afterlife, He's just doing the equivalent of 'MY OPINION'S BETTER NYAH NYAH NYAH!'.

The article got it right, he wrote a book in the 80s about the possibility of the existence of a deity. But it doesn't matter anyway this is his opinion. Just like all the other beliefs and statements are opinions.

Arista, Atheism and Religion are two sides of the same coin. They both consist of people acting as though they know what no living person will ever know for certain. The only way we'll know for certain is when we pop our clogs, anything before that is opinion dressed up as fact.

Nice mention of his disability, must get that one in.

As one of the greatest living geniuses though I think there's a little more weight behind the opinion. That, erm, thing called science.

Again this is still all irrelevant when heaven is still a manmade notion. There is no proof for it. In that sense it's still believing in something that there is no reason to believe in, mostly out of fear. I think agnostics are just using indecision or "omg we'll never know" as an excuse to refrain from the harsh truth.

I was referring to an Afterlife really, I don't care for religion. As a species we've mapped out every bit of the world and we haven't discovered unicorns or the loch ness monster which pretty much lets us assume that they don't exist since they'd have existed on this physical plane meaning that some remnants of their existence would most likely have been left behind given how much we know about long extinct creatures from their remains.

If there is an Afterlife then by the very nature of how we've defined it, it would be another plane of existence. Something that we cannot prove or disprove since it wouldn't be something physical.

Or it might be, who knows. My point is that it's something No one will know for certain until their time is up.

Okay I love this weird stuff so random food for thought tidbits for anyone that cares. Plenty of it is scientific fact, some of it is hypothesis :

Spoiler:

The eye is only responsible for 10% of what you see. The other 90% is that meagre 10% taken and processed by the brain. Nobody really knows the particulars of what life and the universe look like.

Multiple dimensions exist all around us that we cannot percieve

Everytime you dream your pineal gland floods with Dimethyltryptamine.

You're pineal gland is activated by light/dark cycles of the sun and is the only part of the brain not divided into a left and right hemisphere and is the only component exempt from the brain/blood barrier system, fluoride in drinking water calcifies the gland.

Modern birds and reptiles have been found to express the phototransducing pigment melanopsin in the pineal gland.

A popular theory on the origins of our evolution dictates that we came from amino acids that spread all over the planet as a result of collisions with asteroids. In addition we are made of the same basic molecular elements of exploding stars. In a sense ... we are from space.

Given that light takes an extraordinary amount of time to reach the planet you are looking back in time when you see stars in the sky. Many of these stars may have been long extinguished and you are watching recordings of their death. Time is relative and space is a living, breathing portal.

We are in space of course. If you were on Mars you would say you were in space. Why not when you are on Earth? This is space.

In this humble posters opinion no amount of time or chemical chance could create a species capable of self reflection. A body of chemicals capable of describing themselves as chemicals. It's absurd. Androids can't be thought to love. Some amount of intervention had to have taken place. If not by an intelligent force of nature then by aliens. And who created them? Maybe aliens are our gods and this intelligent force of nature we all speak of created them. How do we know this has not happened dozens, hundreds, thousands of times over?

4-hydroxyl-dimethyltryptamine or Psilocybin is the active chemical in magic mushrooms. It is at it's molecular level almost an exact replica of the DMT the brain produces and which occurs throughout the entire ecosystem. It is in itself almost alien in it's chemical makeup, exhibiting a phosphoros position and composition not seen anywhere else on the planet. Some believe it to be an intelligent life form that can only communicate with you through ingestion.

Go on YouTube, watch all available videos of Joe Rogan ranting, log off TiBB, and read a few books.

Don't turn you're back on the Wolfpac.

slightly going off-topic but I've always found

fascinating. I remember the physics lesson where our teacher just dropped "theoretically we could all die any second" because of the time it'd take for some supernova or something to appear to us. That was a fun night's sleep
