The existence of mythical creatures and what happens in the hereafter are fairly different examples, the former can be proven to not exist, the same can't be said for the latter.
What proof does Stephen Hawking have for his statement? Saying there isn't an afterlife is exactly the same as saying there is. It's all opinion at the end of the day since there's no physical way to disprove or prove the existence of an afterlife, He's just doing the equivalent of 'MY OPINION'S BETTER NYAH NYAH NYAH!'.
