Exclamation Brazil Overtakes UK's Economy

Quote:
Brazilian economy overtakes UK's, says CEBR

The Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) said its latest World Economic League Table showed Asian countries moving up and European countries falling back.

The CEBR also predicted that the UK economy would overtake France by 2016.

It also said the eurozone economy would shrink 0.6% in 2012 "if the euro problem is solved", or 2% if it is not.

CEBR chief executive Douglas McWilliams told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that Brazil overtaking the UK was part of a growing trend.

"I think it's part of the big economic change, where not only are we seeing a shift from the west to the east, but we're also seeing that countries that produce vital commodities - food and energy and things like that - are doing very well and they're gradually climbing up the economic league table," he said.

A report based on International Monetary Fund data published earlier this year also said the Brazilian economy would overtake the UK in 2011.

Brazil has a population of about 200 million, more than three times the population of the UK.

Brazil's economy grew by 7.5% last year, but the government has cut its growth forecast for 2011 to 3.5% after the economy ground to a halt in the third quarter, with analysts blaming the country's high interest rates and the worsening situation in the eurozone.

And although Brazil currently sells more to China than it imports, Brazilian manufacturers have complained that their industries are being affected by cheap mass-produced goods from the Asian giant.

The CEBR also said that Russia moved up one spot in its league table to ninth in 2011, and predicted that it would rise to fourth spot by 2020.

It predicted that India, the world's 10th biggest economy in 2011, would become the fifth largest by 2020.

And it said European countries would drop down the table, with Germany falling from fourth in 2011 to seventh in 2020, the UK from seventh to eighth, and France from fifth to ninth.

It's interesting that Russia is projected to rise to number 4 by 2020, you hear a lot about China rising, but you never hear much about Russia doing so well.

The two countries that scare me the most are Russia and America as I could see them two countries starting off World War III.

Anyway well done to Brazil.

Russia and America have both proven themselves to be reasonable powers, if a war didn't happen during the cold war, it's not gonna happen. Both America and Russia have been in hugely stressful positions, and both have always shown restraint when it comes to starting any kind of HUGE conflict. They both understand the principals of MAD(mutually assured destruction) and both have a proper respect for it.

China, North korea, Iran, these are the countries you should be scared of, because no one knows what they are gonna do in high stress situations.

Very true on all points. History proves that.

Well you might consider Russia "responsible" and China, Iran and North Korea not so, but Russia would side with them if war ever were to break out; they were the last country to host Kim Jong Il before his death and one of the few to send their condolences, and they criticise countries like the UK and the US a lot more than they do China

they critisize the US and UK more because they trust us, they know us, we have a long history of diplomatic relations. They have to appease the rogue states because they are rogue states.

Just look at America and Russia how we trade spies with each other sometimes. We do it responsibly, they catch our spies, we catch their spies, we release them back and forth and it all goes smoothly, and we both laugh about it afterwards.

Would you feel more comfortable criticizing your best friends and family to their face? or criticize a stranger to their face?

Obviously you can talk more honestly with the people you trust more because you know that you can always resolve it. If you piss off a stranger, you have no idea what they will do.

I'd much rather get into a fight with someone i know well, than get into a fight with someone i don't know anything about. you don't know if they have a gun or a knife, or if they will call your boss, they could do anything to totally ruin your life. But if you get in a fight with someone you have a relationship with, you know that eventually you can resolve it.

I remember reading a report about the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) and how they were all expected to drastically improve, economically, a few years ago... weird to see it happen, but understandable all the same, considering their population sizes more than anything!

Their living standards still aren't expected to match ours till 2028 but is still quite significant, we'll likely start to see more and more countries start to achieve huge growth like the BRICs have, Indonesia, South Africa and Nigeria will be the main ones following in their footsteps apparently
