Default Work: Am I in the wrong?

I work in a service station and today while taking an order out back prepping it to take into the shop, I noticed some glue mouse traps which are disgusting things that should be illegal and I took them to my manager and basically told him my grievances with them. The order was only small, and they don't stock many, only enough room for 8 at a time and the order was 16 at something like 99p each so it isn't a money maker, but I basically asked him if he would not mind if we did not stock them and sent them back, because I detest them and people who use them and he told me to stop being thick and carry on. The insult took me back abit and I basically told him that I refuse to take them out front and we had a bit of an argument over it. Would you say that I am in the wrong for taking issue with them and I should just shut up and do my job?

I don't think a person is ever in the wrong for speaking out against something they strongly disagree with

Shut up and get on with the job, leave your morality at the door. What are glue mouse traps?

Sheets of glue that mice get stuck on and either starve to death or rip themselves apart trying to get off, it can kill birds too if you leave them outside.

I agree that we should all speak out against something we feel strongly opposed to Creg, bit I think that there are some situations, where discretion is truly the better part of valour - and this is one of them, unless you can afford to lose your job or you're not bothered about keeping it.

You have registered your protest but your boss's reaction should tell you that continuing to argue the point with him will not only be futile but could end up actually causing 'bad blood', if not actually getting you dismissed.

One thing that you could try - if you already haven't - is try to source competitively priced, more humane traps by your own efforts, then suggest to your boss to start ordering these instead. Explain to him that you've done the 'leg work' and know where to source them and that the cost is comparable, and tell him that it'll help you feel better and why.

If you preempt any reasons he can come up with for not changing, and remove them, then why should he refuse?

Unless he's just a jerk-off with a Napoleonic complex.

Good on you for telling him how you felt. I'd never heard of 'glue mouse traps', but from what you've described they sound disgusting and I can't imagine why anyone would purchase them.

On the other hand it is a bit of a tricky situation because you are working for the company, and if they (unfortunately) do sell these products you have no choice but to get on with it, unless you want to leave the job.

These work like a charm and the mouse feels no pain. But the service station is there to make money and until you become the boss or run your own you will just have to suck it up.

Imo you're not in the wrong at all, i would've done the same thing (but i probs would've ended up rage-quitting when he started having a go at me, so it's good you kept your cool)

your boss shouldn't be stocking them in the first place, but then calling you thick because you raise awareness? he's an arsehole

I don't think you're in the wrong for voicing your opinions/concerns.

But your job is to sell all of those products, not demand that the store remove certain items from stock.

So, voicing opinion = good, refusing to sell certain items = crazy.

\So you think it would be right for a person to speak out against interracial marriage if their co-worker was marrying a black man? it's just her speaking her mind, and she wouldn't deserve any criticism>?

As others have said you have made your point, now you either have to get on with it or leave, most jobs have an aspect to them that people disagree with if that helps

I think you're right to air your feelings. Although leading into an argument it's a bit silly really. Depends how much you value your job over sticking to your morals I suppose. In most jobs you have to leave your personal thoughts in the back of your mind and get on with it.

In short you should just get on with your job.

Besides, who would go to a service station to buy mouse traps? That's the last place I would think of going to buy something to kill of animals. Seems a bit of an odd product to sell at a service station to be honest.
